Formula 350 vs. 70 Mustang 302
A guy I know has a 70 Mustang 302 3 speed automatic with 650 carb and swears his car is a lot faster than mine(when its running) but I havent seen it in action. I want to race him when he gets a new starter put in-just for the hel of it, but do you think I have a chance? I am running a fairly stock 350 with some cams and headers.

Is that it?
Are those all of your mods???
Headers but no Cat-back? Nothing done to the TPI, No chip???
I'm gonna say that if the mods you said are all you have, along with that XE268 cam, you have a real Mis-match problem. If you do have other mods, you forgot, you should have a strong runner there. It depends though, 70's Boss stangs are quick, but you do have a chance there.

Don't forget, the stang is an auto too.

Why is that??? 700r4 are not comparable to Mustangs AOD's, you know that right??? 700r4's kick booty except for the fact that they weigh too much. They have a super low 1st gear ( the problem with the Mustang trans) which when combined with L98 torque= killer launches.
He states he has an AOD in his Firebird, and if that is at all true, he will lose, meaning I am making fun of AODs!
I know the 700R-4 is a good tranny, and the AOD sucks, that was what I was saying all along, get it, a joke, Funny!!!

i dunno about the 700r4 being a good tranny. it had a lot of weakpoints. i just like it because its got OD. built correctly, however, it can be nasty.....
The pipes on the Formula 350s stock are not that bad. The intermediate pipe on my previously LB9 87 IROC was 2.75 inch and the although the y-pipe was not perfectly round it was pretty big compared to the other models.
The stock muffler on the other hand was a non-flowing POS
edit: oh yeah forgot to respond to original question. Racing a car that old is a total unknown. But I bet if he is running a stock cam and heads you will beat him.

being that i own a 1970 mustang 302/C4, with crap gears, a 600 carb, intake and a set of longtube headers, i can tell you that you should whoop his ***... bad. My car is a total pig. It looks good, and it sounds good, but thats where it ends. If i had to guess i'd say the thing ran very high 15's....

Uh....
Just so you guys know, i saw another thread of his, and he said he's shifting at 4000 rpm. maybe i read it wrong, but I think that what he said.
I think he's got a mis-matched combo here. That cam should have him shifting at at least 5000.
302 / high 15's???? something could be wrong there. Don't think that all 302's run like yours..... Some are just good runners and will run 14's all day long. Boss 302.

the boss 302 was a completely different animal than the regular 2v 302. there really is no comparision between the two. The regular 2v 302 was good for 220 hp stock, and remember those are the "old" ratings. The c4 that comes with them is a slushbox in stock form, and the best gear you could get is a 3.00, while 2.79s were more common. Now if all hes got is a carb, i doubt hes gonna be much of a threat...

My 66 had a 302 from a 69, not the Boss motor. Although it did have a 2bbl carb on it, it is a dog of a motor! I would guess around 180 hp with the 2 bbl. I would have bet my car ran in the 15s, but could not be sure!

If you have bad gears, change them. 15 second 1/4 mile times with a 2bbl with crappy gears? That's bad?
Yes, mine had 2.73s, but weighed about 2800 lbs!
I would have to agree, the non Boss 302's weren't very stout, and in a larger car would be pretty slow! I would say the F-body has this race!
