My ex GF had one, that was a 5spd, I was surprised at the pickup it had to it, for the kind of car it is. I wouldn't say it's fast, but it did surprise me.

The Omni GLH-S was one of these. After the Shelby treatment--which included the addition of an air-to-air intercooler and raising the boost pressure to 12 psi-- the 2.2 turbo put out a whopping 175-hp. That power translated to a 0-60 time of only 6.7 seconds, while the quarter mile flashed by in a brief 14.7 seconds at 94 mph

Yeah.....the Omni GLH-S is Carrol Shelby's self-admitted favorite car. There are so many cheap mods you can do to the car, it's scary Once you get rid of the stock computer and drop in Mopar's Hi-Po model, you can overboost the engine for long periods of time. It's not difficult to get one of those cars (or just about any other Shelby) to 250 hp. Shelby himself owns a 300hp Omni, ad there are a few out there that run 11's in the Q, with approx. 350hp and 400 ft-lbs., with mostly off-the-shelf Dodge parts.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! I had an Omni and it was the biggest piece of **** ever!!! I swear, I literally clocked the 0-60 in just a tick under 19 seconds!!!! It was the slowest car I have ever owned. I always talked crap like I was going to go drop a turbo engine in there but never did. I always wanted a Shelby because thyey are the ultimate sleepers. There are some guys who live by me who can tune the Shelby's into the ten's. Hell, one guy has an astro van with a turbo engine that can run 11's. It's absolutely sick! SICK!

Most Omnis are no faster than Geo Metros, old VW beetles, and Hiyuandais sp? Some Omnies have been souped up to unbelievable levels. I garantee you won't see them toting around town. Those kind particular Omnis are for speed freaks with no ego. It reminds of how some people put 400 ci Ford engines into Pintos. I have seen some of those run 9's NA, of course they were all trailer queens though.

Yeah, ask the guys that worked at the Dodge dealership I worked at what they thought of the Omni. When one came, we all just cringed, those are some of the biggest POS cars around. They're meant to be driven and then thrown away, nothing more.

They are still a great beater. My parents bought one for $200, the only thing they ever had to do is replace the head gaskets, Chrylser could not make head gaskets were **** during the 80's. The car lasted over 4 years.

I would love to have a turbo GLH or GLH-s. It does not matter that the car was designed to be a beater, it all goes to to the sleeper effect. Like having a turbo Caravan. I saw some guy in a early 70's Oldsmobile station wagon, he was next to a 2nd T/A with a 455, and I heard a killer exhaust and a mean cam. I thought it was the T/A until the T/A turned off, and it was the station wagon.

It's like I said, some people like to go fast, but don't have an ego to drive fast in a Vette or something. Omnis are economy cars - meant to get you places efficiently.

I agree....the base Omnis are 'disposable' cars, but the Shelbys are a horse of an entirely different color. The 2.2L is a pretty tough motor (especially in T2 trim), and can handle lots of upgrades without significant problems. Plus, what a sleeper! It's not tough at all to turn a stock GLH-S from a 16-sec. car to a low 14-sec car (less than $500 in mods), which isn't all that fast, but when you think about being able to completely smoke a brand-new Civic Si, SVT Focus, Sentra SE-R Spec-V, RSX Type-S, not to mention run toe-to-toe with the Neon SRT-4 and WRX, in a 20-year-old grocery getter, that puts a big 'ol grin on my face.

Sometimes you just have to drive what you can get your hands on.
