Would I get totally stomped ny a 2nd gen T/A w/ a stock 455?

A kid here at school has a 76 or 77 T/a with a stock 455 in it. I'm not sure if he's got a 4 speed stick or a 3 speed auto. Is he even worth running with my 84' or am I gonna just get worked???

It' definately doesn't sound like it could take my car, but with all that torque, I'm not sure what would happen. I don't know much on the specs on these cars or these motors. I'm not even sure if thats the right year I listed or not, but it has 4 headlights up front, and the fender flare deals.

I thought '76 was last yr forr the 455?

I had a '76 400 and it was slow as *****. The gearing was horrible.

I believe stock it ran 17 flat or so.

Well,,,,

In that caqse I guess I could royally embarass him with my 84, even if he runs like a 15 flat, I still embarrass those #'s pretty good, the race is usually over before it starts, ya know???

I thought they were upwards of 300 horse, easy. Guess not huh???

How well does your '91 run? With the 10.6:1 comp, and iron heads, can you run pump gas?

92 octane doesn't ping.... no problems at all. I just can't buy cheap gas.

Pretty soon I'm going to build a 355 though, and I don't want any more than 9.25>1 compression so I can run any kind of gas I want.

Vortech heads aren't prone to pinging either, because of the swirl produced in the combustion chamber, this helps alot in preventing detonation. Whenever you want to build a stout street motor and run High comp. ratios, you better find a way to get some major swirl going on in thier, or else the molecules relaatively sit still and they detonate ( flat tops, stock style iron heads, and High Comp. )

Don't forget, 10.6>1 is not that high either, LS1's are right up there, but they have a computer to retard the timing if the gas is crappy. 11.1 and up just gets ridiculous with the pings though. I just make sure my timing is between 36 and 38 degrees.

If he decides to rebuild and modify, he could have a 12 second car at the drop of a hat. Until then, he can suffer with his 2.41/256/2.73 gears. Whichever. None of it is good. He should have 3.08s at the very least.

I doubt he's moddded

I highly dougt he's even in the 13's. I know what a large cube motor than runs 12's and 13's sounds like, and he's not it. Remember, he's still gotta smog it. He can't be all that fast. Then again, I'm not legal.... woops!!! Did I say that?? Don't call the authorities please!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's not a 76'

I checked out the pics for a 76' and that's not it.

It's a 77' body/front clip style. He must have pulled the motor out of an earlier model or something else. Do 78' and 79 look like the Bandit style???

Hmmmm........

So he's all stock? Oh, G0D...Does it have that soft growling sound accompanied by the light clicking sound of poor exhaust? Every stock late 70s GM v8 I have heard has that sound.

I don't believe the 455 came in 77! The smog years killed all cars(1975 and newer had to have cats and higher emissions, so I believe it was discontinued by then). That doesn't mean he didn't transplant a 455 in it(then lookout) The 455 T/A's were special kinda like the ram air 400s/camaro 427's/mopar 440's(forget hemi's), Ford cammers. I could be wrong(wouldn't be the first!!!!!
