Only problem I found with the autobahn was trying to convert those damn kilometers into mph (just for my own comfort). Also, when you get off the autobahn and onto some 1 1/2 lane country road in south Germany, you have to make a real effort not to fly. Those roads suck, and I always seemed to get stuck behind a delivery truck of some sort.

Where in Germany are you stationed? You gotta be careful on those little country roads, They do have cameras and will take your picture and send you a ticket. I loved it when I was over there. I was stationed in Baumholder. The armpit of the country, almost as bad as Kirchgoens.

My wife and I welcome any American Firebird or Camaro driver to our place in The Netherlands.
We live in the North part of Holland, close to the German border,I often go to the Autobahn to have some fun,and "clean" the engine of my Firebird,as we have those stupid speedlawes here as well!!
Just let us know,we will have the American flag in top!!!

Yeah, one of my goals in life is to take the Z out on the Autobahn. Someday maybe.

..... armymp where are you stationed at ?? I'm in germany too You guys are wrong, Darmstadt is the armpit of Germany. And as far as Polizei not messing with. Those damn cameras sure do. I was still getting tickets forwarded to my last known address before I joined the military two years after I was out.
Dutch-Bird, I wish I would have known you when I was over there. Staying with the locals is always fun. And that thing about speed limits in the Netherlands. I learned the hard way crossing the border into Holand about speed limits. I honestly didn't know.

At least there were women in Darmstadt. There are few too many in Baumholder(you gotta get away from the post cause everyone knows about the women that live near a military installation. The only good thing is we were so close to Luxembourg and a short drive to Holland. That was the only benefit. To many mountains, too much fog, and too damn cold. I will tell you it seemed like ht enorth coast of Africa compared to the mountain I was sitting on in Bosnia for a Year. It snowed in May(That sucked)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kirchgoens was so bad they finally closed it. It was in BFE, a little village was close by and that was it. I spent 3 years in Friedberg just south of KG. Miss the autobahn and the beer. Nothing like thinking your the sh*t cruising at 130 or so and getting your doors blown of by a 911 Turbo and a Lambo trying to catch him!
I had wood for days after that episode.

I had wood for days after that episode. Pete, what mountain where you on. I used to have to visit a few of the hills. My unit had to pull security on three of them. We where at Tusla East for a year.
Oh and to keep on topic. That's a good kill. The Audis seam to be some of the faster mid size sedans I saw on the Autobahn. They would just cruise by me at like 140 mph like it was a Sunday drive.

I would be toast on the Autobahn with my TH350 trans. I guess you still have your OD or 5-6 spd?
Sad to say I have only had crappy rental cars while in Germany and the most I could squeeze out was 200-220 km/hr (130mph) and it's true, you still get your doors blown off by 7 or 8 series bimmers, A8's, and 911's.
Even though not Fbod related, if any of you are ever in the South of Germany you should swing by a small village called Mindelheim (just off the E54/96, about 1 hour drive west of Munich) and check out a local garage/fabricator/dealer called RUF. (Por$che is their $pecialty) This guy fabricates some beautiful and blindingly fast machines and is at least worth a look even though they aren't Camaros or Firebirds. BTW (Him and his wife speak perfect English too)
I'll keep my eyes peeled for any F bods next time I am over in Germany on the Autobahn so you can run me off the road in my VW or Opel rental car!!
Didn't you have to register your car in order to legally get an Autobahn "vignette" sticker on your windshield, thereby giving you permission to drive on the Autobahn?

I think if I got the chance to take my car on the Autobahn, I'd kill it... so I'm probably better off this way.

I don't remeber the name of the camp. What I do remember is that it was a 26hr road march from the SAVA river South and East(at least it was 26hrs with the new 2nd lt. we had). At one point we were the furthest american Artillery unit in the american occupied area. The artillery battery i was in was split up 1 platoon north and 1 south.
4 inches! It snowed almost 2 feet. Could barely get outta the tent. And no pavement sucked. I don't know how many times vehicles and people would get stuck. Around August we moved north and got to live in these little sea container things. Definately better than the tents we were in for 6 months. That was called firebase Eagle/Steel Castle.

I definitely wouldn't mind having a go at the Autobahn in my Camaro, but it will never get there - besides gas is $4+ a gallon!
What would be an optimal Autobahn car would be a Z06 Vette with the gears stepped down to 3.07, which would give you a 190mph car - nothing you will ever normally find on the road would be able to top that. Lets not even mention the potential for modified ones.

In Germany once you get down into Bavaria you'd be suprised how many Ferarris,Lambos,Porsche's and Mercedes you see. Plus the fact that no american spec Mercedes/BMW would keep up with the Germany spec models as well as other cars.
Gas isn't that expensive if you are in the military. You pay the average price per gallon as you do here. It is one of the agreements the US has over there. The autobahn is a techno marvel people routinely travel above 150mph in the rain over there. That design has the knack of just sweeping away water from the surface........................................

I have yet to see roads better than what you typically find in Germany. This is the biggest contributing factor that makes the high speed driving safe (cough) and possible. Try driving anything over 160 km/hr on our highways here in Canada and chances are you can kiss your a** goodbye! In short our roads suck next to Germany's Autobahn.

To Dans-Zed,
That "vignet" you're talking about is for Swiss and Austria.
German Autobahns are free!!!
It's a bit frustrating to be waved aside by "normal"looking cars like Audi's and BMW's,but that's how it is.
V-8 and 5.7 Litres (350 CU) are nothing compared to modern German 4-cilinder engines!!
I know,happens to me a lot!

Every last sunday of the month, starting april, ending september, there is a large,FREE American car meeting at the parking space at Mc Donalds in Groningen,The Netherlands.
If the weater is good, about 200-300 cars show up!
It is organised by The Sundaycruisers.
Their website is http://members.tripod.com/~sundaycruisers/
For the Americans in Germany it's not that far away, maybe we see eachother there someday!
Greetings from Holland!!

Dutch Bird,
I'm definetely taking note of that meet in Groningen as I will most likely be in Tilburg this coming summer. It's always awesome to see some American iron over in Europe!
