Can you guys help me out a bit? It's been about a year since i rebuilt the 305 in my 85 Z28. The block was bored .030 over, and it's got 8.6:1 comp pistons. I used the mild 204/214 cam from Summit, along with a Performer manifold and 600cfm Edelbrock carb. The heads only got milled slightly along with a valve job. Im also running FlowTech headers, custum y-pipe to a 3in exhaust with a Flowmaster muffler. The tranny has recently been rebuilt, and has a shift kit on it.
Ok, what should this motor be pushing my Camaro to in the 1/4? The reason i asked is because i lost to a "stock" 91-92 RS Camaro this past Sunday. It was a 5-speed and only had like 60000 miles. He didn't let me see engine though when i asked him to, he only said it was a stock TBI with only mod being an air cleaner. Right off the line he got me by like a car length and he keep pulling me. The only plus is that my car ran like crap in that run, and i KNOW i can do way better.
This Sunday im racing a friend of mine. He's got a 91 Trans Am with a 305/auto, but he's got the Firehawk T-Ram intake and 1000cfm Accel throttle body. That's how he bought it like about 3 months ago. Is he gonna whoop on me??

you should have walked all over that RS. i think the 91 will be a good race for you. if your car ran perfect, ill give you the race..but you said it ran like crap in the other race so......

Your compression ratio is way to low. You are running the compression of an LG4, so figure 150 horsepower plus the mods.
The cam is not too bad, boring .030 over was a good choice, gives a bit more torque.
I am running almost the exact same setup but with an L69, so my compression with the rebuild is almost 10:1, I run mid-low 14's.
I also have a 5 speed though and 3.73's. With your car in proper running order I would say you would run a best of a low 15 possibly a high 14 second slip.
Tune her up, you can't be losing to stock RS, then you'll have a bunch of TBI'd 305's runnin around thinkin they're fast!
edit: 500th post! woo-hooo!

Yeah i choose the low ratio because this car is my daily driver.
I still don't think that RS is "stock" like the guy says. He beat a slighty modded 5.0 Stang as well, and keep up with an LT1 4th gen for a couple seconds! Is that supposed to happen?
Anyways i'm gonna run my friend's TA on Sunday, depending how it runs i'll try and run that RS again.

Well, I don't want to lose alot of streetability from the Olds, but I'm going to have to have a 9-10 compression ratio. Otherwise, you're work just isn't going to matter as much. Especially with the cam I got.
That is...if it's still in good condition. I bought it a long time ago. Still haven't got the project going...

Well, good work--now it's a triple post.

Kinda off topic here, but 330hp RS, what kinda hood is that?

I'm going to have to say the RS wasn't anywhere near stock. Your car is faster than he made you think because he lied about what he's packing. If you keep up with LT1's well into your 2nd gear, then that RS was NOT stock. A stock RS cannot beat a lightly modded 5.0 Foxbody... ever. It just doesn't happen.

It's a stock hood with a corvette L88 scoop on it. I sliced the scoop up a bit though so it would look similiar to a SS hood but give me the clearance I wanted. Soon I'm gonna mold it in and then give her a show quality paint.Originally posted by Z-Man 85

As far as you saying that you wanted the low compression, because it's your daily driver... mine is definately my daily driver and it gets 20 miles to the gallon on the freeway with 3.73 gears. Timing is everything. But if you look in my sig at the mods on the 84' Z you will notice that I have almost the exact same mods as you but with a much better compression ratio, so I get a lot more power.
I think you have a capable car, just needs tuning. Get an A/f gauge, and a vac gauge...then tune the advance curve of the distributor so that the advance comes all the way in ASAP.
As far as that RS keeping up with an LT1... My 91' RS ran mid-hi 14's when it was still TBI'd...so it's not impossible but I'd say he had a whole different setup in the car. As far as him beating a slightly modded fox body...was it auto or stick...If it was an auto..and since he beat you...I'd say that's no big deal. But dang...I have a rough time "keeping up" with LT1's..especially the modded and ram air ones!

Sounds to me like the guy was jerking your chain with the whole "stock" claim. Stock 305 tbi with only an air cleaner, my guess would be a high 15 sec. car if the guy knew how to drive a stick. Ya never know what someone has done to thei car though, aftermarket air cleaner, ultimate tbi mods, exauast(headers included), 3:73's, posi and a set of drag radials and the 305 could have been runnin low 14's. I don't doubt he would have tore your *** outta the hole but if his car was stock you would have started creeping past him not to far in the race. I can't really say anything for sure because i haven't actually seen either of the cars run but this is just my best guess.
