Raced a Vette!!!

Finally ran against one of these c5's. i was on my way home from a toyota dealersip my buddy works at( he was kind enough to detail my car for free before i go to the Daytona Car Show), anyways....... i was cruisin along and i saw a silver c5 roll out of a neighborhood in front of me. they were stopped at the light and both(20-30 year olds looked back at me. they gave me a nice i did as well. they turned out onto the street and i held my rpm's at 3 grand in first. they were about two cars in front of me when i saw him drop his clutch like a mad man. he took off and i said no no and floored it. my front end lifted up a little and i was hanging with this boy all the way to 80-90 until he slowly started to pull slowly though! i was so excited that i even got a chance to race this guy let alone hang with him. how fast are those things?? he took off quick. either way he was cool as shizznit and pulled beside me and asked what i was running under there. i said stock told him i was kidding when i saw his face do this number either way just wanted to share what seems to be like a once in a lifetime experience!! wish me luck at the show tommorow

They usually run low 13's, you have a pretty quick car to be able to hang with one. The LS1 is no joke, especially from a roll. Good race!

I am not clear on what seperates a C5 (non Z06) from a Fourthgen WS6... is the Vette considerably lighter or something?

The LS1 f-bodies out here (vegas) run mid to high 13's. They're fun to mess with from a stop (TPI TORQUE!!!!) but like said from a 40mph roll they'll destroy me!

Whatever added traction the tires add is offset by the crappy launches of the independant suspension. The engines are the same, whereas the f body will generally dyno more rwhp actually. The vette makes up for it in the weight department. Everything set aside, the vette and f bodys run very similar times.

WHAT!? The crappy IRS launch you are referring to belongs to the later Cobras. The Vettes hookup very well. They have an extra few hundred pounds in the back compared to an F-Body with the IRS components and the rear mounted trans. Combine that with better tires...

Regardless of what they dyno, the Vettes are usually a couple of tenths quicker than the F-Bodys.

Did you know the f bodys actually have a hotter cam in them than the corvette? They also have a sold rear axle that doesnt eat up as much power as the vette's independant rear suspension. Most LS1 f bodys will dyno about 5 to 10 hp more than the vettes, but the vette weighs about 200 lbs lighter and is more aeroynamic. Usually the 2 will run VERY similar times. It also depends on the drivers. There was a C5 at the track that ran a 13.4 to my z28's 13.2 so where is the couple tenths quicker you are talking about?

wow . i knew some of that info but not a lot. that kinda suprises me. although vettes do look very sweet. but then again so do ls1 camaros, i love cars i just came back from the daytona spring beach car show and i have never seen so many sweet cars in my life. i witnessed a superbird take off down the track. that made my day. i got to tell you i have never seen so many spreewell 22" spinny rims in my life . there were some third gen's representing out there too. a lot were ragged out though . dissappointed me. either ways it was fun

One more thing...Where did you get your ELEC. cutout and how much did it run you? I am thinking about getting one myself and would like a little feedback and opinions from ya...Like where you have it mounted...I was thinking about mounting it right after the axle.

i got the cut-out from mccord. it was like 80-100 dollars. i mounted mine right after the y-pipe. since you can adjust the level of sound it makes no difference if it is close to your headers

99' C5 vs 99' Z28 (Evan Smith driving both cars)

Camaro: 12.8 at 108mph
Corvette: 12.6 at 110mph

I would bet you in those runs that the z outlaunched the vette and the vette gained it back with its less weight and better aerodynamics as shown with the 110 trap speeds. Like I said, the independant suspension isnt the best for drag racing. The vette wasnt designed as a drag racer either, it's suspension is far better suited to road racing.

wow thats amazing. those cars are meant for road racing though you're right. it's just sad that 3/4 of them will never be takin to their limits

just out of curiosity, where do you get this info from? im willing to bet you read it or thats what the fbody guys say to each other, and its not based on actual drag racing experience. while im not sure about how the C5 launches, i have personally cut a 1.94 60ft on regular street tires (no drag radials) in my 100% stock C4. what 60fts are you getting in your LS1 fbody? cause ive never seen one get anything better than a 2.0x unless its modified. the Corvette IRS setup isnt as crappy as you think

Yeah, the Corvette IRS is as good as any for drag racing.
I believe C5 Vettes have some drivetrain loss due to their rear transaxle, not because of the IRS.

There are plenty of guys pulling sub 2.0 60 ft's on street tires. Go to LS1.com and look at some of the times even stock.

I know its Car and Driver, but go over and check out their performance breakdowns of any year Corvette and Camaro. The Corvette is ALWAYS at least .2 quicker to 30 MPH...
