Close race with a 3000GT VR4...
...but I lost...
Got my car back from my parents house last night(was on vacation out of town and stored it there for a couple of weeks).
I was eager to try someone because my car is running pretty good....
Drove all the way home(minus 2 miles) with not another sporty car in sight.
4 lights away from house what do I see but a Mitsubishi 3000GT Turbo....I blow past him from behind to let him know that I wanna go and he follows.
We line up at the first light...light goes green and we launch...I pulled him by about a fender off the line and we go to the top of first where he starts pulling on me....he shifts to second and I start catching him but as his revs started winding up he again pulled on me...but I am pretty sure that my car was in second when it should have been in 1st.....
Next light I drop my car into Drive and launch perfectly...had him by 1/2 a car, he finally pulled on me top of second and we let go.
His car sounded pretty good, and went well as well. It looked like it might be slightly modded as well(aftermarket exhaust was noticable).
Oh yeah all this was with my tops off and windows down, that should have affected me somewhat, no?
All this to say that I am putting a rush on installing my heads, intake and headers.
I feel bad losing races...but it was a good run nonetheless!

Yea, the aerodynamics definately are affected with the t-tops off and the chassis flex is more noticable so that might be a reason, especially from a stop, although the sfcs might help somewhat...
The 3000GT sure is a pretty car, and there is a ton of "fancy" things about them in the twin turbo models such as 4 wheel steering, but they're big pigs, around 3800lbs. You don't usually see them modded too much either as they don't respond as well as DSMs do to mods and they're pretty expensive to mod and fix (4 wheel steering=$$$$$$)
Pretty cars and nice to drive around in (girls love them) but you'd better be rich if you want to race in them.

You pulled a VR4 out of the hole? Sounds fishy to me. That 2.3 60 in your sig wont even come close to what that VR4 is capable of. Those cars are prolly capable of 1.7 60's on street tires.

The track is usually tougher to hookup at.
Also I have been practicing my launching on the street.
At the track I will be running with stickey tires so I plan on just mashing it off the line.
On the street though I need to baby it so that's what I've been doing....also I am not sure this guy was driving pretty well...he wasn't power shifting so maybe he wasn't launching very well either.
I did hear him rev it up at the light but maybe he rode the clutch a little too long....
Who knows for sure....

i run drag radials on both the street and the track. on the street i have to baby the launch or ill spin all the way through first gear. at the track i just hold the rpms at 2 grand and floor it on the last amber for 1.7 60ft times. there is NO WAY i could ever launch on the street like that!

Yeah on regular street radials, the track is usually tougher to hook.
With drag radials, slicks or any sticky tire the concrete launch pad and VHT help, but with just ordinary street tires it seems to spin considerably more at the track...that's my observation after many years of racing a different cars and different tires on the track and street.

Listen "BRO"
Actually I am not crazy.
It was in fact a 3000GT VR4
It is in fact harder to hook with hard compound street radials at the track vs. street. The rubber left by other cars on the launch pad act as a slick surface when mated to a hard compound street tire. My street tires can't warm up for **** so the cold harder rubber just slips and slides on the soft warm rubber layed down.
My car is actually running very well for a stock L98 (over 96 MPH) so I need not check my tune.
The fact that I had my tops off hindered my performance somewhat but that's the breaks of racing on the street light to light.
As for him taking me off the line, yeah I agree he should be able to without much trouble, but racing isn't all about the car, driver experience and technique play a big factor as well.
Yeah drag radials work better at the track ofcourse...I never intended to say that the street hooks better than the track. All I said was that on street tires, not cheater slicks, but true street tires often the street works better. It still depends on alot of factors like engine power, gearing, suspension, but my experience with the 2 cars I have ran over the last 10 years has taught me this.

i raced a vr-4 on the highway one night. it was before i had any mods.
we would both nail it, i would start to pull, then he would jus start creeping away. they are fast, but this story sounds true. don't call bs on this guy. he did say he lost...ya know?
good race man, add some more mods and you'll be taking them vr-4's out.

Yes launching at the track can be very difficult if you are running hard compound street tires. No doubt about that at all. The rubber left down just makes a slick surface for your street tires to burn on. Good race. Get those mods done on the car and you will be taking down the VR4s with ease.

Haven't got to run this setup yet. Only got runs on the old peanut cammed 305 which were unimpressive to say the least. This setup should be good for mid-high 13s. The rear gears are killing me

you'd be surprised about your rear gears. TPI motors don't really like high numerical gears.
got a buddy with a 95 LT1 Firebird. 3 Speed automatic 2.73. Bone stock except for tuneup, on BFG Drag radials runs mid 13s....That's pretty quick for a stock LT1. He finishes the 1/4 mile in 2nd.
Torque engines don't need to rev, rather they prefer to pull hard through a gear. You might end up changing rear gears and not gain all that much.
If you can benchmark the car at this point and try to only change gear ratio to see the difference.
I am off to the track tonight to run my car on some hoosiers(I've been trying to get there for over a month). Then next week I am installing my Vortec heads, headers and SDPC base. I should see the bottom end of 13s if I hook well.
Your combo should see low 13s as well.
What are the specs on the ZZ4 cam? I might decide to do a cam swap this winter as well.

Rear gears for my car should be good for a couple tenths in the quarter. With the auto tranny the rear gears are very important.
The specs on the cam are: Duration Lift: 208/221@ 0.050" Lift: .474"int/.510ex" Lobe Separation: 112
It's a nice street cam. Has a nice tone to it and makes some good power. Plus you can get them dirt cheap.
Sounds like you got a sweet ride there. With those engine mods put on VR4s are the last thing you will be worrying about

I am not terribly worried about VR4s...just posted it here for the fun....
Yeah I am looking forward to finishing up these mods...car should feel pretty strong.
I was just over on a LS1 board....man those ran fast with some bolt ons....

Wake Up!!!
The vr4 will kill your car off the line. I own a 1988 Trans Am GTA 305 with a five speed (which is faster than a 350 automatic because they ****ed up the intake from the factory and they weigh 3800 pounds) and my VR4 will kill it. The vr4 will kill it period. Also that year of trans am is poorly built! Better yet, I bet he didn't even know you were trying to race. Let the driver know next time, so that you can remember what his tailites look like. Then you can avoid them in the future, because you said you don't like to lose.
Better yet, go to http://www.albeedigital.com/supercou...0-60times.html and see how close your car runs to a 3000gt. And yes I already know the 3000gt weighs around 3700 pounds! Even If you modded your car you would never beat a vr4 off the line. If you hadn't posted that, I might beleive your story. No hurt feelings though, just trying to keep you honest. I like GTA's as well, thats why I own one.

I guess so bro, thats when you wake up and realize they are heavy boats. Nothing a good powered L98 with slicks cant handle.

Wow talk about back from the dead! BTW I ended up seeing this VR4 at the track a few months later and he was running low 14s.
My car currently runs mid to high 13s all day long with 1.89-1.91 60 ft. on regular street tires so, bring on those VR4s, even off the line. Unless you get one with a really experienced driver I am walking them off the line and all the way down the track.
What's your VR4 run?

have fun racing you vr4 and blowing your trannies and transfer case on a hard launch
vr4 are harder to launch than mos people think too low on the rps you have a slight bog and a hare of turbo lag too high ad you start breaking your glass transfer case and trannies. i have heard storeys there trannies are almost as weak as are rears that is why people don't launch that hard

Trucks that are launching are using 4 wheel high then usually clicking it into 2 wheel high after first gear. This method is just fine for the street and track, and, IMO different then AWD cars...
Check out the link. Don't race a stock honda accord!!!
A stock 1995 vr4 should be just a fast as your modded camaro. A stock camaro of yours (1987-88) would have a tough time keeping up with a 2004 honda accord. Check this link http://www.albeedigital.com/supercou...0-60times.html. I also heard that chevy wanted to save some money, and made your rear ends out of glass instead of metal!!! Launch that down the track with a healthy motor, decent clutch, some slicks and see how far she goes. Chevy addressed this problem by adding a new feature to their camaros.... heated rear bumpers to keep your hands warm when your pushing you camaro down the track with a grenaded rear end.

Ahh man, you're right! Can't argue with an internet page with times on it. Who even needs the track anymore? Just go to that webpage!
Next time someone asks me to race, I'm just going to say nah, lets go to http://www.albeedigital.com/supercou...0-60times.html and compare times! It seems to be 100% accurate too:
1990 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 6.5 15.0
1992 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 6.7 15.2

Those numbers are probably pretty accurate. That's why every camaro on this forum is moddified. I don't think anyone was happy with their stock performance. I was pretty dissapointed when I got my 305 1988 trans am. So I put a carbed 350 in it. Then the trans went, so in went a new one with a sticky clutch, then the rear end went. Then I was really pissed.

and if you think are rears are weak (witch the 10 bolts are) and expensive i dare you to launch at the track at over 5500rps all day and See how cheap it is to replace your trans and/or transfer case because you will most likely blow it on the second or third launch

Accurate data
If those numbers are not accurate, what do you think these cars should run in the 1/4 mile?
1984 camaro, weighs approx 3400, produces 190hp (305)
1988 camaro, weighs approx 3400, produces 170hp (305TBI)
1988 Trans Am GTA weighs approx 3800, produces 230hp (350TPI)
You guys are right, those #'s are bullshit, theirs no way in hell those cars are that fast at the track.

Are you joking. Your telling me if I launch hard 3 times at the track my tranny and transfer case will break. Not going to happen. The trannys are as strong as yours in your cars. Our motors produce over 315hp from the factory, where as yours produces 170hp-240hp. The syncros go after about 100,000-150,000 miles of abuse. And this is normally caused from turning up the boost. Yours would to if you had more horsepower!!! The transfer cases break because the seals leak from the factory. Mitsu had a recall for this. The transfer cases are plenty strong, as long as there's fluid in them. And you don't have to dump the clutch at 5500 rpm to get a good 60 foot time either.

i have heard of midsu black listing suspected racers and not replacing trans because they had so many trans failures this was in the early 90s when they had the 5 speed and only 300 hp i have hired this from many sources one of them being 3si.

Man, you make alot of sense. You start by calling BS and laughing at this guy for posting something (admiting to loosing, but saying that he thinks it would be close on the track), saying that he would get owned by this car because of some site's stock to stock numbers (when the f-body is modded).
Then, when he shows that he really could have beaten him on the street because he does beat him at the track....you start saying using numbers (again) from the same site on the internet.... Wow, nice way to prove that the f-body would loose.... comparing stock (and mostly incorrect) stock numbers for a car that is modded. A site's listing. Not what really happens on the track. It ever occur to you that they could be wrong??
Dem thar numbers are RIGHT!!! They got to be, they're on the internet!!
(and don't start on my car, I know it's slow as F*CK. but, I'd rather have it than some import)

I love getting you guys all riled up!!! I love Chevy's, had them all my life, hate Fords though. I was borred a thought I'd stir up some ****. If I'd said nice race, I wouldn't have gotten so many posts. The mitsu is a nice car, If you sink $25,000 dollars like I did into mine. If you don't, it's slow as ***** and to heavy. I prefer Corvettes the most out of the Chevy's though. Sorry, I own a GTA and I'm very dissapointed in it. Heavy and slow. Prefer it over any civic though. Hate those **** boxes. I'm looking for a 2003-2006 viper on Ebay right now. No rush though, to much snow on the ground. I like the viper over the corvette (all aluminum big block). Unless I can find a cheap enough 911 turbo. But the Porche's just don't rumble like a big block. And most lightly modded vr4's should be faster than a lightly modded 83-92 F-body.

If you have Mommy and Daddy pay the price for the kid, it's possible. Parents probably paid for his supposed upgrades to the Mitsush*tti.
I'm 38, parents are passed on. Your late 80's camaro's are slow and poorly designed. When a Supra pulls up let me know how the race went. Get a real job, then you could afford a nice car, maybe a 69 camaro, viper, corrvette, something worth talking about. I wouldn't let my son drive your shitbox's. He's 16.

vipers are v10 not big blocks and there exhaust sounds like monkey poo
and where do you even find enough aftermarket parts to put 25k in to that car. honestly there are no people who mod those cars other than exhaust and boost controllers. there internals are too weak are the trans and transfer case and the turbos are too small.

First off, my car is a Pontiac Trans Am, not camaro. Secondly my GTA weighs 3570 lbs, I know because I weighed it. Thirdly the 240 HP rating of the stock engine is underrated from the factory.
My car now runs mid 13s all day long, launches hard and fast off the line and handles like its on rails and gets better then stock fuel mileage. All this thanks to the the overall balanced and intelligent upgrades done by me. It actually drives much better then stock, so I would consider that a personal acheivement on my part by taking a car designed in an era that performance was put on the back burner and bringing up to modern day performance levels. If you want to get into a pissing contest and attempt to show off by bragging about a viper or vette you want to buy then I invite you to come and take a look at my site and read about our Pontiac 455 build that I would be more then happy to put up against your future purchase.
You can quote a website and the times people claim they run all day long here. I run these times, period.

I think this guy is special...in a
kinda way.
Poorly designed.... That's why the rear suspension on them is considered one of the very best solid rear axle suspension designs ever. Notice how about everything sporty has a similar desing?
Poorly desinged...that's why you can spend around 2000-3000 in the suspension and pull well over 1G on the skidpad.
But, they're not imports or 40-90K dollar supercars, so, you know, they're sh*t....

OH and BTW the 9 bolt Borg Warner diffie is known to be a very strong rear end.
I still don't get what your original problem with all this was. But I'm to old to getting into a pi$$ing contest with ignorant posters.
