my first ever race, 1999 Eclipse 2.0L 16v Dual Overhead Cams 4cycl. Vs. my 1991 Camaro RS 3.1L v6 flowmasters, and K&N CAI
1/4----Beat him by about 2 car lengths
2/4----Beat me by about half a car lengths

A mechanic told me that the 4valves per cycl. and the dual overhead cams allows him much better top end speeds than my v6 can do, I thought my v6 with the addition to the two extra cyclinders could keep me up with him...

Well I am soon moving up to a 305 TBI......

''Well I am soon moving up to a 305 TBI....''

Are you sure it's moving up? I would say you are going down...

Skip the 5.0 and go with a 350 if you want to win.

are the 305 TBI's really that bad, so far I have been getting loads of negativity from a 305 TBI, maybe I should hold off till I get a 350....

Would it be easier and cheaper for me to install the 3.4??? how much more hp and torque does the 3.4 put out vs the 3.1???

I would say go for a 305 TPI, it's a LOT better than a 305 TBI in term of performance.

reason why I say this is cause the dude wants to sell me the camaro that has the 305 tbi in it, for 400 bucks, he said there is something wrong with the fuel pump, but it's most likely the fuel relay like every one talks about... I first replace the relay then to the pump, if the relay is not the problem...

If you want something out of that 305, it needs a rebuild, and in which case, why not a 350? And a 3.4 isn't that great either. I would go with a 350, but if you stick with a v6, the 3.8 responds better to mods, and is overall a lot better motor.

you guys are funny. Ofcourse the 305 tbi will be faster than your current v6. Another note, the tbi has basically nothing to do with why the L03 has a lower hp rating than the 305 tpi. They have completely different heads which are VERY restricting on the tbi car and a very small cam. The exhaust manifolds are dinky, etc. TBI has virtually nothing to do with why the L03, aka 305 tbi, is of a lower hp rating than a 305 tpi, aka lb9. Swapping tpi onto it will be a huge letdown to you if you think you will gain a bunch of power. If it's only 400 bucks I say definitely go for it.

I heard a lot of people beating 305 TBI with 3.1L F-BODY... So I don't think it's that powerful... Maybe if you do some stuff it will go faster, but still, a 305 TPI is a lot faster.

might take a valve cover off, change the oil, clean out the TBI, basicly..... get our hands dirty with out getting scuffed up... and saying we rebuilt it....

you have been lied to. What 3.1 do you know that run's high 15's/low 16's stock? I don't know any that can come close. Most have trouble breaking into the 17's, let alone come close to a 305 tbi.

my digital dash I just had installed tells me my 0-60 my mpg and 1/4 and I tested my 1/4 and it was like 18.8 with my 3.1L v6 I am not sure about the speed I was going... But hell it was fast enought to beat me a 99' eclipse.... Had to drink a beer when I got home after that one..

Don't let an eclipes' sporty look fool you. They are truely one of the slowest cars on the road. One of the members a while back said a few of them at the track with several bolt ons were struggling to get into the 17's. But still, for a V-6, you did well. A win is a win.

Well...95 GSXs run in the mid. 14s???...But ya the regular non turbo non awd ones arent all too impressible. You can also mod a dsm really easy and make it really fast for not much money. So dont sell DSMs short...

I agree with going to the 350, but the 305 TPI is not a bad choice either. I've seen guys taking 305's, putting some into the drivetrain and suspension along with just a few mods to the motor and run with if not faster than a 350.

But what every you do, skip the TBI. Has good torque in the bottom end and just falls flat on its face on top.

The TBI isn't really the problem, in fact it breaths better on the top end than TPI cars do. Unfortunately the LO3 comes with bad intake, heads and cam which makes it slow. With some work and not too much money you should be able to hit 13's with that 305.

i dont think the v6--v8 matters to the insurance company. A camaro is a camaro to them. Hell my 83 TransAm isnt listed as a sports car. But then again its not listed as economy either by a LONG shot...Ive heard bad things about TBI...Id say if your gonna swap an engine in. For the amount of work ur gonna do go with a crate 350. You can get one for maybe 1-2 grand...With pretty good HP...Overall I would tell you to just keep the stock engine in it until you can save up for another one. Your choice!

insurance companies have a HP class, along with a safety equipment class, actual value, and a car type class which they all factor in for determining your premiums, I jumped $80/period in liability going from a 305 TBI to a 350 TPI car! an LS1 car you'd have similar payments cause inspite of a higher value and HP rating, its got more safety features on it than our cars do. So it will vary even though they are the same car
