92rs vs. SHO

i was on my way to meijer to get a fuse for my cb and i see this car weaving in and out of traffic, low and behold we catch a light. i look over and these two idiots in this late 90's SHO look at me and laugh. well i started off slow i wanted to see if he would do anything. when he got his rear bumper to my front bumber he gunned it, this was at about 25mph or so, so of course i followed suit. When i let off at about 50 my back bumper was just past him but i was still pulling, unfortunately i had to let off, didn't feel like hitting the car in front of me. I'm not sure of the exact performance of these cars but it must of sucked to be him when my loley LO3 passed him like nuthin.

Nice kill...

If it was a newer one they were very weak but still in the 15s I believe. If it was an older one (1992-1995) then it could have been a high 14s, low 15s car!

The older ones are the threat, but stock the 5spd cars were low 15's (probably a few factory freaks in the upper 14s). The newer ones are pretty doggy especially since they are v8's. The first gens of the SHO's though took alot to get some serious gains out of since that little yamaha v6 was pretty well strung to begin with. (kinda like the S2000's 4cyl) Nice kill though and any chance to bust some idiots bubble that thinks he is hot shyte is a good one.

I thought 4.2 liter, but also hear 3.4. Im sure you could find out, but the newer SHOs were junk. They had issues where the valve train would collapse because of a faulty timing chain I believe, and the damage was beyond repair from what I hear.

I would love an older MTX, but not a newer one!

I just researched it, it is a 3.4 DOHC 207 cubic inch V-8, and rated at 235 hp, not for sure what the torque is on the car.

my roomate has one... runs 15.1s... all he has is a y pipe (stock ypipe is a restriction on them) and solid alum front subframe bushings.

and if the two idiots laughing in the car was in the dallas area, it probly would have been me and him.. lol.

his is the earlier (and faster) SHO.. the later ones are crap from what im told.

Actually yamaha didn't have anything to do with the newer sho's-they're totally ford-probably the reason why the cam sprocket had to be welded in almost everyone one after the valvetrain collapses. It's repairable but costs a few grand. I have a friend with a 96 black on black with straight pipes though and whoah does it sound bad. Not all that quick though you need an old one for that. Yamaha built those motors but Ford dumbed them down because when in original form ford would've had Taurus's stomping all over their precious Mustangs. Also the SHO's would never launch well, but watch out for a 89-95 5 spd on the open road. The second gear is killer. And with a few mods (y pipe, chip, MAF) they will run mid/low 14s.

The Mustang factor didn't have anything to do with it. Unlike GM with the Corvette, Ford doesn't have the unwritten rule of Mustang supremacy. That's why there were a few years when the Probe's, SHO's, and the later Lightning trucks ran neck and neck or better than the Stang.

The 3.0 and 3.2 engines were inteneded to run up to 9000rpm, but Ford didn't have accessories that could handle the rpm, so they lowered the rpm with lesser valvetrain.

Really? The V8 SHO was engineered by Ford? Nope. Ford never made a 3.4L DOHC V8... I've worked on the later SHO's here at the Lincoln/Mercury dealer I work for and according to the Ford Technical Hotline engineers, the V8 is also a Yamaha engineered motor. Yamaha was called upon to design a new engine, one that would meet OBD-II requirements, as the older V6 engines would not.

A lot of Ford's engines are engineered by other companies. The SOHC 4.0L V6 is not a Ford engine. The DOHC 2.5L Duratec V6 is not a Ford engine. The DOHC Zetec 2.0L is not a Ford engine either. Ford doesn't make the 7.3L or the new 6.0L diesel engines. There are others...

Anyway I originally was referring to the earlier model cars, from 89-95. That's what most refer to when they say SHO.

BTW - the V8s have IMRC too
