Explain................

 

In an auto, food on brake, foot on as, apply the brake enough to hold the car while spinning the tires...

extremely easy!

 

When you're drag racing, you power brake to heat up your slicks. When your slicks are hot, they stick to the pavement better giving you a better launch.

Like that post above me.

Foot on brake, Foot on gas...let the smoke roll.

 

Last time I tried doing it, all my car did was start to lift up a little bit and didn't spin the tires. Something also smelled like it was burning up............

Advice?

 

it's possible (I see Hondas at the track trying to do burnouts, hilarious). I would think it would be easy for you, maybe somthings wrong.

 

It's probably cause I didn't bring the RPMs up over 2k

 

dumb question... dont take it wrong... did u have it in drive? i'd put it in 1st personally... i've always done it this way, heard it was better that one from somebody.

how much gas did you give it? i know all of my 3rd gens will lift a little before they spin, if you didn't give it enough gas it odviously wont spin the tires... more info required

What was the smell/haze behind my car? I just don't want to be burning something up.

I feel like such an idiot, I could build a drag car with my eyes closed, but don't know the basics of powerbraking.

Also, doing this everynow and then won't ruin my tires too fast will it?

 

smell/haze could have just been more gas, i mean it's probably gonna have a little gas smell just b/c ur sitting still and giving it gas, your not moving so the smell is somewhat more prevelant i would guess. and on the note about the tires, that depends on how "good" a burn out you do, if you sit there for a minute and roast em making a HUGE cloud of smoke then ur tires are definetly gonna show it, if you do it repeatedly. but if you just sit there, let em spin a few seconds, and then let off it wont hurt them to bad. but trust me it's tough to just let em go for a few, b/c smoke all around you is awesome, even better when its in the car


oh and if it's an L03, then it's probably rich to begin with so thats another reason... more gas

 

It didn't smell like gas. Is there anyway I could be damaging my transmission?

 

or even the rearend for that matter?

 

Its bad for the engine, the transmission (just smell your ATF after a few 'stands', its no good for the rear and will not do the brakes much good either, especially when your calipers become overheated and sieze. ofcourse it will prematurely wear the tires.....that's where all that smoke is coming from!

it will get the tires sticky, but it is simply not worth doing without a line locker. There are better (cheaper) ways to get your tires to stick.

 

But doing it for a few seconds everynow and then won't do any harm, right?

I know for a fact I'm putting a line lock on my truck. The 16" tires in the back aren't just for show.

 

I just tried it again, and the tires still wouldn't break loose. What in the hell am I doing wrong? When braking, do you only give it a little bit, only enough to hold the car?

 

yeah just give it enough so that the car doesn't roll forward. i cant believe u cant do it, i can do it in my L03 with ease. maybe ur brakes are just to good. what are u reving it to?

 

You can't believe I can't do it?! I can't believe I can't do it. I've turned the tires in everything.

I was reving it pretty high, maybe I'm getting on the brake too much and not noticing it.

 

hey rebel! get that tune up done first, it will make the brakestand that much more possible.

 

i dunno thats wierd even without a tuneup he should be able to spin the tires... if u go to a stop sign and gun it off the line do the tires chirp/spin/ does the rear fishtail? put the car down in 1st next time u try.

 

I don't think I've ever really spun the tires leaving from a straight line going forward, could something be up with my tranny? I'll mess around with it tomorrow. I know it'll burn the tires up, not too long ago I got really pissed off at someone and when I backed out of her driveway I spun the tires for a good 15 feet in reverse. Granted the ground was wet, and it was uphill, it still spun the tires enough to leave big black streaks.


Edit- There will be times, like the time I floored it in reverse going uphill out that driveway, that my rear will hop like crazy. There's this one uphill spot on the road that will almost always make my car start hoppin and my motor will bog down.

 

OMG!!!! reverse burnouts are sooo bad in a thirdgen, wheelhop, suspension breaking city, your lucky you got away with it more than once. I only did it one time with my 83 and I thought I killed the car.

 

I get wheelhop doing 60mph on a certain hill, what in the hell is causing it?

I only did the reverse burnout once, I couldn't help it. I was so pissed off I was shaking, I practically had the pedal to the firewall before the car was even started.

 

You get this power braking thing worked out yet? When I picked up my car I could sort of spin the one wheel even with 4 flat lobes on the cam. At one time though, the poor 305 wouldn't break them loose even in the rain Did a lot of fixing/tuning and changed out some things and that 305 burned some tire. With my new engine I can spin'em from a roll so much more fun.

 

If your having this much trouble and all these problems with the car, dont power brake it. Sounds like somethings not right, why make it worse! Almost everyone I know can do this, and they arent car people and are anywhere from 17-20 years old (the younger ones), so either its the car or the driver!

I say lay off the trying for w hile if your car has wheelhop at 60mph, your going to (if you havent already) break it!
