89 GTA vs. 944

So I'm driving home last night and pull up to a light beside 2 young guys (maybe 18) in an older Porsche 944. He asked me if I wanted to race but I told him no, cause I don't really like the idea of racing on the streets. (plus my cars in bad tune right now anyways)

But I AM curious... I know a lot depends on driver skill... but who do you think would win a drag, my 89 GTA, 305, 5 spd? Or the 944? (I don't know if it was a Turbo car or not... I don't think so, but not 100% sure)

You would be able to beat a 944 and 944S

The Turbo 944 (951) would be very close, if you are in a bad tune he would probably beat you, if his was running properly.

The 944 is a 4 cyl.
Not that fast.
You got the torque to get him.

Weren't the '88-89 944 Turbo S cars in the low 13s stock? Granted, it probably wasn't a Turbo S as they are fairly rare and expensive to get one in good running shape these days.

EDIT: Sorry, the '88s were low 14sec cars with 217hp and 243tq, but the '89 Turbo S cars came with 247hp and 258tq in a 3100lb car that ran mid-high 13s stock. 0-60 in 5.5sec and 0-100 in 13.6sec.

Really... huh.... I guess I just figured Porsche = fast... I don't really know much about them, which is why I figured I'd ask you guys. If I hada known that most 944s were slow 4 cyclinders I woulda raced him and blown him away! ha ha Maybe I'll see him around again sometime...

One of my buddies has one and they are pretty quick, but you should beat him. Off the line you will take him but towards the top end he would catch up slightly, but you would still have him. A guy that goes to my college is doinga a 944-S to LS1 Turbo swap. That has got to be ridiculously fast, esp. for a car that doesnt weigh much at all.

I wouldn't exactly call a low 14 or mid 13s car "slow" when you are driving a stock 305 thirdgen, heavy GTA no less. Of course, like I said, that's for the turbocharged models. All 944's came with 4-cyls and weighed something around 3100+lbs...hardly a light car for a 4cyl.

3100 lbs? I didn't think a 944 would weigh that much... the GTA would be around what, 3500 lbs or so?

Well, if I see another 944 around sometime maybe I'll give 'er a go... too bad the GTA is off the road this Thursday tho

So let me get this straight. You didn't want to race him because 'you don't like the idea of racing on the streets'. But when you learn that you probably would have won, then you 'would've blown him away'.

Uhhhh, yeah.
