89 Formula vs 99 Grand Prix

Theoretical scenario
1989 Formula 305 with a 5-speed manual vs a 1999 Grand Prix GTP
Formula factory ratings 230hp 300lbs torque
GTP factory ratings 240hp 280lbs torque
Thoughts opinions? I think the Formula might have the advantage out of the hole plus its stick but i've heard that the Grand Prix auto transmissions are pretty good and would probably pull on it pretty quickly.

I would probably have to agree with you. My friends got a 99 GP. Of course it's not the SC'ed GTP, but it is a little ballsy. You'll probably take it out of the whole, but he would probably stick with you, or pass you at higher speed. But I'm not sure so don't quote me on that.

I rode in a GTP and was actually kinda surprised, pretty peppy for a Grand Prix!

Are you carb / TBI / TPI?

You better know how to launch that car perfectly. If you don't that GTP will rape you off the line if he has any clue as to how to drive it. Those things have a TON of bottom end.

Theoretical but i'm thinking about the stock TPI LB9. I dont actually have a formula (yet) but the fastest car in the group of friends I hang out with is his Grand Prix and was just wondering what a match up would be like. Do you think a 350 L98 would leave it behind?

IIRC GTP are geared pretty mean so it should have a good launch if the driver is decent.

I think this will be a drivers race. There is a 4dr GTP at our local track that runs with a cut-out (and maybe a pully) and runs 13.7's all night.

GTPs are quick little cars! My aunt's ex husband had one and I got a ride in it and it was definetly fast for a little sedan.

Like shifty said just a couple hundred bucks and they'll run high 13s.

Id say the GTP has the edge. Give or take its a drives race both cars are fairly even.

I beat one of those 4 door GTPs in my 5 speed LB9 car. The driver really sucked and I walked all over him but iam sure in the hands of somebody that could drive it would have been alot closer.

I'll try to keep that in mind in the future then. My last roommate is a computer genius (yes, he's better than you, and even your one friend who made this one program that did something) and he can't spell for ****. Keep in mind that there are a lot of you and you all run together. Your avatar might save you though.

OH! That cheep comment made my day. LOL!

My best friend has a 97 2dr GTP all he did was put a 3inch pulley on it with no other mods and ran high 13's all day. So when you race him just remember he's the fastest in your group for a reason.

His car is bone stock and is worn out, plus I don't think he knows much about driving really...might mess up an auto.

Hes asking for trouble if he has no supporting mods along with that 3.00" pulley. All I can say it that thing will and is knocking. It has been deemed that nothing smaller than a 3.4" pulley will knock if you have a few bolt ons, but on some cases they still do see a little Knock retard.

best way to beat a gtp is race from about a 40mph roll.. when i had my 98, off the line or at 55+ starting out, it'd fly.. but for some reason the shift from 40 is slow.. unless of course the driver changed the computer, then the 40 roll advantage is gone..

I could be wrong with the size of the pulley I know he's got the one that doesn't do any harm to his engine a 3.4 or 3.2 I forget. When My car was stock 305TPI he killed me by car lengths.

So what would have a better chance the 305tpi with a 5 speed or say a 98-02 Firebird with a 3.8 and a 5 speed. Even though the Grand Prixs engine is a 3.8 with a turbo on it. I think the firebird might have have a better chance from a roll.

supercharger get it right or pay the price

and no my 1996 v6 stuck dead even to a 1998 gtp the sad part was that the gtp had 5 people in it but in my defence it was at 55 the very worst place to race a m5 v6 camaro

I'm just so used to talking and reading about the turboed 3.8 in the TTA and the GNX.
