Got to race my 89 GTA twice today

I got to race my 89 GTA against a Civic SI and a new Mustang GT. My Car has a 350 TPI w/ k& N ibtake, hooker shorty headers, smog pump delete, no cat through a blown magnaflow muffler the original owner put on it (dont know the size of the piping but the flange that bolts to where the cat should be is 3 in), also have a strange 12 bolt w/ 3.42 posi and about 100lbs of weight removal.. This combo went 14.9 at my local ytrack w/ my maf sensor disconnected since it broke earlier in the day which adjusted for sea level is a 14.5 Well the civic was a brand new SI and the guy had 2 buddies in the car, we launched from a dig and i murdered him, had 3 car legnths on him by 45 so i let off the gas no need to speed if i didnt have to. About 2 miles later I came up on a new Mustang GT w/ old people drivin. We hit a red light and I was gettin ready to rev my mnotor since i didnt wanna really do a brank stand on a big road. The light was only red for about 20 seconds and he had a stick so he just dumped at the green light as I was about to get my revs up waiting for the light and got caught offgaurd. He took me off the line and got a quickl car legnth on me, I was closing the gap on him but he left off the gas before we got above 55 and still had 3/4 to 1/2 a car on me. All in all it was good fun wanted the guy to race me agian but hje didnt want too but they were the coolest old people ive ever seen driving. WHat 1/4 timesdo thesse new Mustang GTs run? I could tell the guy had some aftermarket exhaust and it sounded pretty mean on the top end, wouldnt be surprised if he had sme headers maybe, and im sure he had some form of intake if he put exhaust on it. Oh well it definite;ly a fun day even if i couldnt get that muistang.

The 99-04 Mustang GT's w/5-speed usually run in the 14.1-14.2 range. The 05 GTs run 13.5-13.9.

Nice runs. Your car should be a tick quicker than 14.5 though. Perhaps somthing is out of wack?

no no no no not at all i did not neautral drop my car. I meant i was about to bring the revs up to like 1500-2k while footbraking but got caught offgaurd by the real quick light.
Ya i was a 14.5 w/ my maf disconnected since it broke about 3 hours before i went to the track. I figure my car should be good for about low 14s with a good launch and a maf. Im also taking a dyno tuning class at my college (thank younissan for the $90k dyno) so ill see whats up. Hopefully ill be able to run it again before I garage it for the big block swap

Take out the bumper supports. Your insurance will probably drop you if you get into an accident, but do it anyway.

Fiberglass hood
Remove the rear seats
Replace steel parts with aluminum parts

Etc etc. Try a search or two for weight reduction. I wouldn't remove your bumper supports. They are a honeycomb plastic in these cars and are not heavy at all.

Interesting. The bumper supports in my Integra were metal and weighed about 25 lbs each. I had to cut through the front one to make a whole in my bumper to let air over the top of my intercooler to my radiator. I'll be sure to mention that the next time I hear someone talk about how imports are tin cans and good ole American muscle cars *snicker* are made solid.

EDIT: Don't they have carbon fiber hoods for Third gens? They have carbon fiber trunks and whole fenders for a lot of the imports. Does full fiber glass weigh less than Carbon Fiber?

**Yes I know that nearly all carbon fiber hoods are only a carbon fiber skin on top of a fiber glass skeleton.

as far as weight reduction i have the rear seats removed, no spare/jack/compressor can, no matting under my carpet, and as of 1 hour ago no ac besides the pulley part which is probly also the most beneficial to pull out cuz it looks like its got some weight to it but i didnt order the bracket just got the feeling to go work on my car and the A/C was the victim

Plastic can be far stronger than metal if it is shaped in a manor that will allow maximun loading before failure . Also, 3rd gens have four feet of steel subframe, and 2.5 feet of iron small block in front of the driver (behind the structural plastic peice) which doesn't necessitate heavy front end reinforcement.

There was one hood that a Japanese 3rd gen racer made and used on all of his 3rd gen race/drift cars. It was a nice looking hood but had zero reliable marketing interest from cheap 3rd gen owners to support the tooling costs necessary for mass production. It was a great idea but, like you know, most 3rd gen owners hold onto the "one day I will have....hell yea make it!....I would buy it...." mind set as they barely make this months rent.
So the guy put his yen elsewhere.

It depends on how thick you lay the fiber glass. All aftermarket fiberglass 3rd gen hoods are laid "open molds" to which thickness is depended on the fabricator. That results in varying material thickness’ which will create inconsistent weights. Carbon fiber per unit weight is lighter than fiberglass.
