Thirdgen and SRT-4

*Disclaimer* I dont know the mods on either car and I am also making a lot of generalizations here, but this is a race I witnessed and what my assumptions were.

From what I can tell in the far lane was a late 80s early 90s L98 car (I was told by other thirdgenners it was an L98) and pretty much stock. In the near lane was a Blue SRT-4. Also sounded close to if not stock. Light hit and the Fbody got the jump, and well past the intersection had a good 2 maybe 3 cars on the SRT. The SRT driver was fighting for traction through first and into second. When he got it hooked the car matched the pull on the Fbody (maybe 2.5-3 cars up) and began reeling him in. Into third the SRT was charging hard, and as he caught the Fbody (probably half way through his 3rd) the Fbody guy hit the brakes to signal he was done racing. In the end the Fbody and SRT would have been close in an 1/8 mile run, but anything past that the SRT would have put a couple cars on it and had a much better mph.

Again read the disclaimer, and choose to accept it or not. From what I saw the Fbody did what they do best and walked hard off the line, and the SRT caught it and would have put cars on it up top.

Yup I remember the big thread my friend started about that Iroc vs. that SRT. From the launch, the iroc would get him, but anything else was digging your own grave.

Yeah, that's no big news. It's the same result a near stock fox body would see. Most of the stock SRT-4's run 13.8-14.2 around here but most don't stay stock for long. Lightly modded cars will eat me from a roll. Dig is the only way to go.

Yea, those are quick little cars. I hear you can make them pretty fast for cheap. I wouldn't mind getting one for a daily driver.

Up here SRT-4s will typically run mid 14s stock, although there is one running 12s. Dunno what he has done.

Sounds about right.

I have had fun them SRT's. Buddy at work has one. Against my Trans Am he lost by a good amount. Against my 305 It was close. He got me but by a hair. Neither of us got any traction so maybe I should get some drag radials and try it again. All he has is a CAI, a "performance" clutch and thats about it. Fun little buggers.

I hate when people slam on the brakes the second they think they're going to lose. What a baby.

Yeah, that's as bad as the guys who jump you off a light, then flip on the hazards like they just beat you.

Always love the next light we catch.

If he was gonna slam on the brakes he should have done it when he had that massive length on the car and make his car look faster than it was... But yeah, the SRT4 is a 13 second car with a good driver

No this guy laid on them right as the SRT hit his back bumper. Im not sure if it was two friends, or just a little stoplight battle, but we got some unexpected front row seats for a few races. Even saw two Civics go at it right in front of a cop, who then got one of them!

It doesn't really have anything to do with what the guy was driving. He was just saying he hates people that hit the brakes when they're about to lose. Frankly, I agree completely.

yeah i don't like it either.... I just was messing with stu for all the posts ive read of his... What about the infamous "fly-by" when ppl turn on the hazards after the race is long over and come flying by after the faster car has slowed down 20mph or so.. I think a certain group of racers invented that trick... it rhymes with nicer.

Your right it does, and stu hates ricers as much as any of us... Just because he had a fast Integra doesnt make him a *****. Personally I read most of stu's posts and realize I am thinking the same things... Im definately not anti thirdgen, just anti moron no matter what he is driving.

Oh don't get me wrong, /***** fly-bys are just as lame, but they are one in the same. I guarantee that the guy who slams on his brakes right as the other car is about to over take him immediately starts complaining about a /***** fly-by. What an *******.

Anyway, when you are so far ahead that it's clear there is no point in going, that's an entirely different thing.

don't get me wrong, im not calling anybody a r1cer here. And im not saying ppl who drive imports are r1cers either..... I use that term for domestics as well. Like gawdy caveliers and any fwd compact with a huge wing (for less traction i guess). Hitting the brakes when your about to get passed is lame.
Its like hitting reset on the x-box when your losing....take it like a man i guess

Don't even get me started on wings and FWD, no one seems to understand what a wing actually does.

even a wing on a 120 hp ****e box. it looks like wind resistance to me...
i always thought it was for downforce at the rear wheels.

Wings can cancel out lift as well as create positive down force.

Why wouldn't a front wheel drive car want the rear wheels to be planted?

**Just so you know, I'm not talking about ANY aftermarket wing that hasn't been wind tunnel tested. Who knows what those things are doing to the car. this is about factory wings. That **** you buy off of ebay is totally pointless, and I know that is mostly what you are referring to.

Maybe he hit his brakes cuz he was in town and didn't want to get up to too high of speeds. I do that all of the time even if I'm reeling someone in.

Well he was NOT in town, and was clearly racing the other car. There was open road in front of him and he had enough ***** to go for it with the other car. Even though extremely dumb and dangerous where they did it, might as well finish it and take your beating like a man.

Ironic how I have never seen it... Go figure

How about you show me 5 times where I posted about L98s getting beat or being slow? How about you show me two times where I flat out said an L98 is slow...

Go crawl back in your hole for a while, and come out when us adults are done having our conversation.

I once put 4 lengths on an SRT-4.
I once put 5 lengths on a 5.0 mustang.
I once put 6 lengths on a Viper.

Or was it 6,5,4?

stock L98 should be close to srt4 but srt4 will pull it.

mild modded L98 should be dead even with stock SRT4 if not win in a race.

but SRT4's are so easy to mod that its ridiculous.

the race in the story sounds about right. but it also sounds like the srt4 might be mildly modded judgin by how hard he pulled. probly stage I and runnin mid 13's at 102-104mph or so and the L98 car running mid 14's at 95.

It shouldn't be a shock that the SRT4 was pulling the L98 if they were both stock. The mopar should win by almost a full second.. i would like to see how close the 1/8 would be... Maybe the l98 was just checking his 1/8 mile competiveness and saving his gas.....

Stu, the wings on the Evo and STi, are they for looks or function? I like both these cars btw.

how significant do you think they really improve handling??
The funny thing is that my Z28 from the factory came with a wing that adds negative performance.... how ironic..

Let's put it this way. Have you ever seen any rally footage? Take a turn sideways on a dirt road doing 70 miles an hour and tell me that you don't want as much downforce on the rear of the car as possible. Or, launch your car 5 feet in the air while doing 120 mph and tell me that you don't want as much side to side stability as possible.

P.S. I do know that the difference in a high speed turn in an Integra with no wing (LS) and one with the factory Type R wing is supposed to be worlds of difference as far as stability goes.

I have a big wing and I would get rid of it in a heartbeat if I had the money.

Funny story actually: My 11 second IROC looked stock. Why? Well, for one, I would never spend money on the looks of the car when that money could go for power mods. Same applies for my STI. I want to remove the wing. Guess what? 17-bolts hold it on (fully functional and wind-tunnel designed and tested). To remove it you have to basically buy a new trunk lid and springs and have it painted. That is approximately $800. Why the hell would I pay $800 to improve the appearance of my car when I can use that for power mods Just like I did with the camaro, I do with the STI. Big money doesn't go towards external appearances. It goes to power.

1. I doubt 25thmustang is saying L98s are slow considering his car is pretty much dead even with them stock.

2. Anything on an Evo or STi is almost pure function. They have huge reputations in rally driving and arent going to start putting parts on there that could be functional but are just using it for looks.

Pay attention to that last word, "stock." As in, his car is stock as well. I dont know of many stock 89 stangs doing mid 12s myself.

For as much as you know about your car, I'm really disappointed in this post. all you have to do is find a guy with a WRX, or even a 2.5 RS (no wing at all) and swap them trunk lids. That's what the guy on my board did with the 400 hp STi. Find someone with the same color car of course.

will a trunk for a regular impreza work? I always favor performance over comfort and appearance too. I favor 1/4 mile performance and i sometimes forget cars operate above 120mph, where mine starts top-ending. My car is just set up for accelerating from a dig or slow roll.

Im sure you could swap lids and get some money on top of that.

i race at thunder valley. altitude hurts our times here considerably. i ran a 14.6 here this year with the 6-speed this year with a 2.39 60 at 97.77mph i couldnt get grip. I ran that 14.5 with a 2.77 rear gear now i have 3.27 my 60 before was 2.1to2.2. My car also needs tuned. I think i can get 13.7 by tuning and with traction. around sea level that would be about a 13.2 to 13.3 i pretty sure.

I knew what you meant, and most were probably faster. My car stock went 15.3 @ 91 or so (cant find that slip anymore). I am just saying I am NOT known around here for bringing down Fbodies or calling them slow, and thats what this guy is claiming. If he wants to say that, prove it. I posted a race I saw with an Fbody and an SRT-4. It seems to be a nice departure from the races guys post with minivans, and stock Corollas...

25th Mustang, are you running in the 12's without a power-adder?

I agree. Seems we have a few trolls on this board who can't seem to take things for what they are.

Sorry, an SRT-4 will walk an L98 stock for stock, period. If you don't like that, buy an LS1 fourth gen.

Without a power adder... Im doing it without fancy heads, a big cam, or any suspension work. Im the kind of person who tries to get every ounce out of his car before adding anything more. Sad thing is, there is more left in it how it sits, which is why it's been a while since I have added anything to make it faster!

There are trolls, they always seem to attack me first to try and get some people backing them, and go after the Mustang guy. The thing about it is, I rarely if ever disagree enough with people to cause an issue. Im usually stating my opinion (how can you fight against how I feel) or fact. Oh well let the newbies waste energy with it, Im not going anywhere. Hell I havent ever been warned by a moderator... I must be doing something right!

Oh yeah, I missed adding this to the last post. This thread wasnt to bash on any thirdgen or even say they are slower than an SRT-4. Personally I dont care which is faster, and in this case didnt even know the mods of the cars. I merely posted because I NEVER have race stories, and if I ever did I doubt I could share as the few times I have raced it hasent been against thirdgens. This was just a race I saw (I dont even see that many street races) that involved a thirdgen, and I figured I would post it as an unbiased third party!

whats funny is that your ideals are rubbin off on me! i'm gettin some slicks and seein what my car can do.. and if it goes 13.5's as she sits or better, i'm gonna try and get it to go 12.99 with no more motor bolt ons cept water pump and pullies.. maybe tune/afpr if needed.

Good, I like seeing more people go that route. Too many guys drop big money on unmatched parts and run so so times. Where if they just took the time and effort could be running much faster. If theres a goal you think you can reach, you most likely can in the right conditions!
