5.0 TPI vs 2004 mustang gt

yeah well my sisters boyfriend has a 2004 mustang gt. i have a 1988 iroc with a newly rebuilt 305 bored 30 over. 1.6 roller rockers and i belive a trans go shift kit. his car is all stock and he has thrased the gears a good bit too. well i also have a 1985 pontiac fiero gt but i think i would stand a better chance with my camaro. i know that i will most likely get beat but i want to know if i can at leats hang with him. oh yeah have k&n filters and gutted air boxes. and for some reason the exhaust i coming out before the cat. so it is Loud so i might be able to scare him into mis shifting

I will say that, I have yet to hear an Fbody that "scared" me with an exhaust note... And needless to say when racing someone your not listening to their exhaust!

i think you can take him cause if he has thrashed the gears quite a bit he might not know how to drive.

BTW fieros are pretty cool i almost bought one.

I had a race close to that a few year ago when I had a 305TPI with just 3" exhaust w/flowmaster. I'm not sure what year but it was a newer model like a 2000 or so. I was on the hwy doing about 60 when this red mustang comes up beside me and starts taunting we slowed down to about 50 then hit it. To my surprise I stayed with him to about 70 then he pulled only one car if that. He could not pull any futher either.

I always forget is that 260hp or 300?The new 300hp GT will smoke you pretty good. I think at best you have a high 14 second car so either way unless he shifts bad expect tail lights.

2004 GT= 260 HP and a 305 TPI= 195 HP (plus your mods) You do the math.......I think it will be fun, but GT will win.

Buddy, don't sweat it.

Remember. You drive an IROC-Z.

Go ahead and race that mustang.

The best part about racing a mustang when you own an Fbody is that even if you lose, you still win.

You get to drive home in the IROC. He's still stuck with the mustang.

With the exception of the TTA. The GT SHOULD take this one. An 04 GT with a 5-speed should run in the 14.0-14.2 range and trap 97-100 mph. Your 305 is probably in the 14.8 range. Good luck though anything can happen on the streets.

Well, what kind of cam do you have in the motor???

Everybody here is assuming that you still have the stock iroc motor (and, as you said, that is not true). Look at the 91-92 TPI motors (they came with l98 cams and around 220hp). Put headers with 3 inch exhaust, up the FP a littlebit, timing up, 91 octane, by pass the TB coolant lines(every little bit helps) and watch yourself keep up with the stang. I am sure you can. Plus you are lighter!

Don't feel so bad man. Cheer up.

Have no worries. One day you'll own an Fbody of your very own - and then you can finally be cool, just like the rest of us.

Nah Id rather go fast for cheap, look good, and have a lot of friends with the same interest as me. Along with having a place to race heads up with other similarly modded cars, and not have to sport a ******t while doing so...

Mustang bashing

ahh the good old days never end with the bashing of the Mustang and Camaro. I couldn't decide which I liked best, so I own own one of each.
A 91 Convertible Z28 and an 88 LX 5L notch.
The Z is fun to drive on sunny days and for cruising, BUT for real fun and tearing up the street, my stang steps in and does the job, the car has such poor weight distribution that makes fish tailing a breeze.
I had a friend with a 2000 GT, we raced against my camaro, we took turns driving both cars to eliminate the driver influence, Both times the GT won and by far. I wasn't dissapointed. I like both.

Fbodies, econo boxes, and minivans all look the same 10 car lengths back in the rear view mirror! And looks are all subjective, performance:dollar ratio, as well as popularity are all facts!

Thats funny.
I like mustangs and f-bodies. It just pisses me off when I see mustang owners mingle among third gen enthusiasts. Its funny how all of 'em keep praising the mustangs, justifying the lack of beauty by saying that its in the eye of the beholder, but they mingle here just because they need the "real looking sport car fix".
I am sorry, GM could'ev done the same thing, they could'ev built an ugly, light weight box and put a 305 in it. That would'ev hauled as much, if not more *** than the mustang. So please, don't come here and praise a mustang just because its faster. Its really like comparing apples and oranges, except you ended up with a econo box.

Now, a mustang owner who appreciates both f-body and fox body gets praises from me, but as soon as you start bashing either, F. U.!

Even more sad is a guy who has 2000 posts on thirdgen.org advertising his mustang. Abandonment issues come to mind.

lol 25th is a good dude to argue with. Theres no debating that. He knows his **** when it comes to Mustangs and when he doesn't know something about F-bodies he doesn't hesitate to ask. Don't pick on him.

On a side note, yes it is in the eye of the beholder on what car looks better. But in my opinion, mustangs do and always will look like boxes with a mean sounding motor. They just don't have that crazy I'm going to kill you look as say an Fbody. Don't get me wrong, I'd trade my 3rdgen in for a '03-'04 Cobra any day of the week, but for the time being, I'm gonna stomp on as many stangs as I can!

Got to defend my third gen bretheran.

Anyways, read what I posted about things that you can do to that TPI motor to help you with the stangs.

Oh, and a supercharger would help quite a bit. LOL!

What I dont get is why people who dont even own thirdgens and think thirdgens are crap even bother coming on here? Does it make them feel better trying to prove to us they have a better car?

Well I just happen to own a fox mustang and a 3rd gen camaro. If you see me bashing on either one it is from experience and not brand loyalty.

Honestly one thing that I have learned in the past ten years of wrenching on cars for a living is that they are all crap, they all break and all of them have good points and bad.

I love my fox stang.

sorry no pics of the Camaro yet. she is undergoing her transformation from lonely LO3 to a Carbed/Caged/Road race suspensioned race car that is going to do battle against other camaros and mustangs in NASA's Camaro Mustang challenge.

evil86saleen that mustang is very nice looking.

anyways it's all personal opinion on which car looks nicer, and by the way if i rememer correctly 79-93 is the mustangs third gen so it could be appropriate for them to be here, given the forum title.

I might have 2000 posts on here, but I have that many if not more on Most Mustang boards out there. I came here originally to learn about thirdgens when my cousin bought one (I was 15 at the time I believe) and have since stayed. The guys who know me, know Im messing around. I know exactly what an Fbody can and cant do, and like stated before if I dont know Im the first to admit it, and ask...

Nowhere in the rules does it say I have to own a thirdgen. As a matter of fact I have never owned one, noone in my family has owned one, and I doubt any of them ever will. That doesnt mean I can come on here and post. And afterall there is a LOT about Mustangs 99.5% of this board doesnt know, but I do!

The 03 Cobra vs thirdgen, would be like me saying Id trade my 93 4 cyl Mustang for an LS1 car. Who is that brand loyal they wont trade junk for a much nicer, faster, better car?

All these 3rdgen worhippers are hilarious.

You do realize that a 2004 GT is a much nicer ride then a 3rd gen...

evil86saleen, that mustang is awesome, a guy that lives less than a minute from me has one exactly like that, just without the decals and graphics.

I am a mustang man and always will be, but I got my car for next to nothing and I can afford insurance on it.

Arguing opinions does not make anyone look intelligent. You guys mine as well argue what is the best color.

I myself wouldn't trade my car for a LS1 or 03-04 Cobra. Would I own one of them on top of my thirdgen? In a second! Both are awesome cars. Some people just have an attachment to their cars. It's not always a matter of "this ones junk, and this ones new". I wanted a IROC-Z since I was a little **** pot. Now that I have one, and have put a lot of my blood/sweat/money into it. I can never see myself selling it.

I apologize for getting off topic, but since we got on the topic of Cobras:
