Could i take these guys?!
Ok! I just bought a new camaro and i was wondering what i could take at this point (im still planning my engine build).
car:
89 Iroc-Z28
305 TPI (LB9)
3.08 gears
WCT5 (im not THAT good yet. Havnt driven enough, but im good enough to hit all my shifts)
Hardtop
156k miles
the engines not in peek condition, but its no worse than any other 160k mile engine.
competition:
90's Chevy Beretta.Auto Its either a GTZ or Z26. Im thinking its a 96 Z26
1995 Riviera. Auto I dont think its the supercharged one but i havnt seen it yet.
2000 Audi A4 (not S4) auto.
82 Fox Body. 5.0 GT stick (my dad)
ill try and get more info on these cars as i know thats not much, but they are all pretty much stock. my dads fox is the only one with anything on it.
Thanks

Re: Could i take these guys?!
Why the 3.08 gears with the WCT5? I would expect a 3.45 or a 3.42 with that trans if the car came stock with it.
If your car is in a good tune and runs strong with better gearing than the 3.08, you would probably take them, depending on what was done to the mustang. That is unless you have the peanut cam in your TPI.

IF memory serves me correctly. 1989 305 TPI 5 speed manuals have the same cam as the 350 TPI'S . I undersant the 305 manual will possiably beat a 350 auto...maybe untill the 350 hits upper rpms. I agree that your gears are going to be your biggest draw back. but you'll see well over 20 mpg on the highway

With a gear change to 342 and maybe 1.6 roller rocker arms, I think you'll have them.

With the gear change and good tune you should have no problems as long as you can launch well.

Re: Could i take these guys?!
correction. The Audi is a 1996 A4. I should have that race given a good launch.
theres another question, should i take these guys from a dig or roll, and on straight road of curvy (audi wants a road-race style thing)

Re: Could i take these guys?!
This all depends what shape your suspension is in, and also what suspension package you have in your car. A 1LE camaro or firebird was designed for a road course type of race. However, a 1LE is not what you have. By the same token, an audi A4 is by no means an audi S4.
If I were you. I would just race them from a stop and see what happens.
As far as launching your car with the manual transmission, it is a feel thing. You there is a fine line between roasting your tires, or your clutch and bogging down the engine. It is something that takes a bit of practice and is also dependent on what clutch you have and also what tires you have. A hard gripping clutch with some good rubber can produce some hard launches.
You just have to experiment for yourself.

Re: Could i take these guys?!
i think you can take um just depends on how you launch like the guy above me stated about teh what kinda clutch you have the harder gripping the harder you launch or whatever. its like my bro had a 90 4dr civic with a i think it was a d16y7 an a stage 3 clutch if u lined up next to a stock civic this thing could do NASTY burnouts with taht clutch and it also sounded liek a shotgun when you dumped it it was awsoem tehn it got hit by a tree... lol

Re: Could i take these guys?!
The transmission is in excellent condition, but completely stock, including the clutch.
Re: Could i take these guys?!
just try bringin it up to about 3 grand and let the clutch out relativly quick but dont just pop it about half way out and feel it out if your tires are hooked at this point put it to the flor and pop the clutch the rest of the way you may have to ride it a bit at first to avoid accessive wheel spin. do a small burnout before the race just to clean of your tires.

Re: Could i take these guys?!
if that is all that is on the fox body then i think that it would be a close race because i have read that the fox body can do 0-60 in 6.8 to 6.9 seconds and the 88 iroc does it in 7.0 seconds and i dont think that chevy would make it much faster in one year

I think you might be thinking of the fuel injected Fox Bodies rokinz28. I know the carbed ones aren't all that great.

Re: Could i take these guys?!
I think thats right right there.
the 82 GT is a carb fox. not only that, but its the 2 barrel 5.0, not the 4 barrel on the 83 and up carb 5.0s.
Ive driven both cars. the mustang is alot of fun and will spin the tires pulling off my street,
but.
the camaro is alot MORE fun, and it spins the tires off the street, halfway up the street, and into 2nd gear
BY THE WAY. at this point, we think it might be a L98 in the car. The block is not an 89. its an 88. its been changed so we don't know what it is but it sure doesnt feel like a 305.

Re: Could i take these guys?!
That would be a very cool discovery. I would be happy if it was a 350 already. Maybe that will explain the engine work that was needed. Now the question is...How many miles would it really have?

Re: Could i take these guys?!
all that electrical work that needed changed/fixed was just stuff in the wrong place. it was all there and all worked. That was why we first thought engine swap. yanno. "wow.. everything is in the totally wrong spot, but its all here... I wonder why they would move everything? Maybe they had to because the engine was swapped..." kinda thing.
Most of the gaskets and seals on the engine are bad. about 1/2 and 1/2 id say. Im in the process of replacing them all. However, as you can see from the lovly lack of traction it can supply, its running quite well. Sounds sexy thats for sure

no not even the riv that thing is a boat
----------
you have about the same hp, more torque, a stick, and about 400 lbs. less.
