91 Formula 5.7 vs Friends 5.0 Stang

Hey crew,

My loudmouth friend went out and bought a junk rusted 89 mustang 5.0. it has little work done to it like a comp box, headers of some sort a cam and jsut flowmaster mufflers. I drove the car when he got it and it has a bad vacumm leak and it has hight gears in it. The tranny is about to blow up, 2nd and 3rd syncrows are about gone. He has had it a few months and hasnt done anything to it, not even an oil change and the car sat for 2yrs.

Now my car is basically bone stock less the 3inch pipe off the cats to the factory muffler, which is going to be replaced by a flowmaster and 3.73 gears.

Now my friend doesnt know how to drive, he had a moded 5.0 before that should have run 13's no problem and only did 14.7 because he has no clue on driving or where the power is or powerband.

So we where at the salvage yard getting parts and left and said lets line up, he was in his 98 grand prix gxp. so we lined up and i ripped him off the line and smoked him.

So i see him tonight at a car meet and he talks smack, oh lets race you know ill win, ect. i said sure but i have a STOCK car just so you know. We live in Vermont and go to Canada to Napierville Raceway.

Thoughts?

PS 3 people there said id win. Why got me. I just want to do it for the fun. he is just a **** lol.

What is the 1/4 time for my Formula 350 if anyone knows?

i say, if you hook, you win. forget a blowmaster. get quality headers high flow (or no) cat, 3" quality catback- magnaflow, borla, hooker. pretty much any other high performance 3 inch other than flowmaster. they dont flow all that well at all, there heavy, and they rust within months. but they do sound nice so all in all, if youre cars in good tune and running properly, u win as long as you go from a stop and get that torquey l98 to hook up.

Yeah i love the sound of the flowmaster. I had an 80 on my Neon lol and it sounds nice surpirsingly. My car has lots or torque, the rear likes to go sideways when i mat it to the floor.

Now how hard are the headers to do? I was thinking about bosch plugs aswell. has the ac delco in it now, new ones.

What about an intake? Get a tube and filter like on ebay or stock K&N filter or the one that goes on the TB.

Ps when racing should i keep in in overdrive or reg drive.

Thanks. I have freshend the motor and other things too. basic things.

You must have had a fake flowmaster cause I have had mine for 6 years with no problems. My g/f liked the way my car sounded so she went and had on put on her 92 RS. When she told me how much it cost I went and looked under the car only to find a Flowmaster look-a-like, it lasted 2 years.

The one on my car is the only Flowmaster I have ever had and dealing with and I have been very happy with it.

Headers are actually surprisingly easy, as long as all the manifold bolt come out your golden, I am using AC Delcos I never liked Bosch, I'm using an open element but you can basically do whatever you want there.... and last i have No idea about D vs. overdrive BUT i have always heard race in D. so thats what i do, wheather or not it helps i have no idea... Also i have a true flowmaster Crossflow i beleive 80 series which i paid almost $100 bucks for the muffler itself but it sounds really good and is still really solid....

Thanks for all the great advise. I have to shut up my friend. all i here is my car is better, blah blah blah. He is one of those people too who will go buy parts and throw them on or just talk smack. The best part is every part he puts on is 15 or 25 hp, which is a joke. lol.

Thanks guys

PS v10viper04 your Camaro is beautiful. I love the look of the IROC'S

if you read my post more carefully, you would see that i wrote "they do sound good" so i agree with you and youre girl. but i still also beileve they flow like sh*t. i see you have a 383, youre probably putting down some decent power with it too? do this, dyno youre car as is. then switch to a quality cat back (borla, magnaflow, gmmg) then dyno it again, youll find about 6-12hp and 8-18ft pds that youve been missing..
if you still dont beileve it, go search the exhaust forums stickies.

You are going to regret going to 3.73 gears with a stock TPI.

Now if you would please go back and read my post more carefully you will see where I quoted you about them rusting out

My point was my Flowmaster is several years old and has not rusted out where the fake one that was on my g/f did.

I have no idea what kind of power I could gain or lose by going to another brand, havn't researched it. I do however have plans to do away with the shorty headers and the Y-pipe and go with long tubes and duel exhaust with a X-pipe or a H-pipe with the mufflers in front of the axle. At this time I'm not sure which mufflers I will use but I will be looking for sound and power.

BTW, I don't do cat backs. the cat has been gone for years.

Re: 91 Formula 5.7 vs Friends 5.0 Stang

OK so last night we finally had at it at the drag strip. I only raced 2 times due to the amount of people there and not being certain how my car would do since i hadnt got her freshend up yet.

So we got to race eachother twice. Here is how the first race went down.

91 Firebird Formula 5.7TPI - 14.82 @ 94mph ( first time in the car getting a feel for it )
89 Mustang 5.0 - 14.76 @ 96mph ( he spun thru 3 gears and his car is modified )

Round 2

Firebird - 14.74 @ 95mph
Mustang - 14.88 @93mph

So yeah. my Stock Firebird matched my friends modified 5.0 and it kinda shut him up a little bit.

Thoughts? Any mods that might help a bit. Budget of course. I have to fix the suspension aswell, its a little worn.

Thanks.

Good job. I like to hear about a 3rd gen mixing it with a Mustang. Don't get me wrong, I like the way some of the Mustang's look btu the bottom line is they are every where and those cocky *** people around here think just because its a Mustang is the fastest thing on the road.

Get in some practice at he track and line up with him again.

Most Mustang owners are cocky... Gets annoying from time to time, but those are usually the fools with14 second cars (as we see with this post).

Re: 91 Formula 5.7 vs Friends 5.0 Stang

I actually wanted a Mustang for the longest time after i sold my 79 Trans am.
Im happy with my Formula once i figure out all the stuff on her.

I like the numbers ur cars are putting up very nice. If i got a Foxbody i wanted to do the DSS 351w Stroker.

My friend and other people are just cocky as u said others are very nice.

He now wants to put an Explorer intake on it with a 65mm tb and Cobra Heads, he has no idea on tuning a car. He has a cam, he needs to see what it is so he can build it right. Cars dont just go fast throwing parts on it and driving it. Research is your friend.

Re: 91 Formula 5.7 vs Friends 5.0 Stang

you have alot more power to be gained in that engine for relatively cheap. meaning getting whatever the best speed density calibration is in your ECM and doing a complete, i repeat complete, tune up and replacing those parts like sparkplug wires and such with premium parts, not crazy expensive ones just good brands like delco for ignition or k&n for the air filter.

last season i was running 14.2's on my stock low mile l98, In a 35000lb GTA. l98 thirdgens can go 13's on a full exhaust(headers too) if everything else is in great condition and it isn't too heavy a car
