Actually the 91 Z28 L98 could manage low 14s. Still not fantastic, but respectable considering the time period when it was built.

The "Time Period" is the operative word here. In todays world a new 4door Civic SI runs bottom 14's stock near 100mph. Its a 2800lb car with 200hp.

A Cobalt SS/TC (2008+) will run bottom 13's near 103-105mph. Neon SRT-4s go bottom 14's all day long and they are cheap to make faster (up to a certain point, then you start blowing halfshafts).

Honda Accords and Nissan Maxima's are running faster than top level Thirdgens were (cept the TTA/Firehawk, but that wont' last forever).

A year or two ago I got my butt handed to me buy a debadged modded Nissan Maxima. No idea what it had, maybe it was just nitrous, but from a roll he was walking away. He got a 2 car jump and there was noway I was catching him.

This is the same car that later that month ran mid 13's all day long near 103mph. So that maxima was moving.

In perfect conditions. The Z is well over 30 years old. 14s is fast for it's time.

That 280 is awesome! I'm considering ditching my fast V8 swap in the Camaro for a RB26DETT swap in the Z. Buddy of mine owns a shop that specializes in the RB series motors so I can get parts easy.

Inline-6's sound phenomenal I think. One of my favorite exhaust noises.

TVR, BMW, Toyota, Nissan inline-6s all sound so good. Some of the TVR Inline-6's are amazing, 4L 440hp naturally aspirated inline-6 revving to 8500rpm causes aural eargasms.

Yummy engine noises.

Supra vs Skyline battle begins at 7:22.

I've always thought it'd be cool to get a inline 6 to fit in a third gen, I've seen it done, but it'd be cool to try it myself.

I really like the sound of the N/A R31 and R32. It's got a little more of a high reving V8 Style Scream. I think the 3.0Liter N/A RB30 would be right at home in a '89-'92 RS. The R31's body favors the agressive and boxy style of the RS, and the motor would look great in the engine bay.

Agreed. Was tailing a new Nissan GT-R on the belt parkway in New York, and the owner must have thought I was dying to run him. Little did he know I was just admiring the exhaust note, as it sounded unreal...

Finding a RB30 isn't easy. But the RB series motors are amazing.

I think Nissan engineers made enough changes to the VQ block to call it a VR... the code is VR38DETT... if I recall correctly

I'm not 100% sure, but I think you have to start a reply in here, and then go to the dropdown box under where you type your message...click on the "do not subscribe" text, and then post your reply.

6cyl are pretty rad.. the supra uses a 2jz twin turbo, the r32 skylines use rb20det r33 uses the 20 as well as the rb25. the r34 uses rb26dett and some with rb25 neo... kinda a japanese import fan... to bad its darn neer imposible to get a skyline in america other than the new r35 wich is v6 twin turbo

The replacement for displacement= volumetric efficiency

I want to swap one of the rb's into my 240sx tons of power but imports get bad rep so pigs will stop you and pop your hood cuz all this jdm **** is illeagle in the states.. the badass factor

Who the hell says dank anymore? A word to the wise kids shouldn't be racing or you'll have your car wrapped around a tree and your brains on the following tree. Take it to the track because watching some kid tear down the street acting like a punk and try to cut the lanes is just about as annoying as a "jdm ek/ eg" whatever. Not that this applies to anyone here but regardless of what you drive when you act stupid...you're just stupid.

This is hilarious and I am sure they say the same about us and laugh at our 5L engines making 170hp

Around here there are plenty of fast civics and not a lot of ric3rs. There are a good number of civics in low 13s and a few in the 12s making them at least on par with the V8 guys around here. There are also a couple of 9 second supras.

Not sure where all the hate is coming from. I still think it is because a stock newer civic can take most stock 3rd gens but who knows could just be ignorance like in the bike world. Where every import guy thinks every harley is a dog and uses tech from the 40s. Then every harley guy thinks every import is slow and uncomfortable. When in reality there is at least 1 quick harley with decent tech and a bunch of comfortable imports.

Apparently you're mad.

Let me clarify.

Neon is a gas, which they put in tubes, and run an electrical current through.

"Dank" is a stupid word that they would use. Hence the quotation.

You are a tool, who sits on the internet, and complains about how I'm talking about rice on a rice thread.

Ignorance, man.

Total ignorance.

tool
noun /to͞ol/
tools, plural
A device or implement, esp. one held in the hand, used to carry out a particular function
- gardening tools
A thing used in an occupation or pursuit
- computers are an essential tool
- the ability to write clearly is a tool of the trade
Using "Tool" to describe anything other than a device created by man is Slang. Just like the use of the word Dank and other fun slang words we all toss around in conversation. If you are going to make fun of them for using slang, you should first stop using slang terms yourself.

The Ignorance in this thread demonstrates the large percentage of idiots on this site, as well as the relative minority of geniuses. If it weren't for the geniuses on this site who have pioneered DIY EFI and drivetrain swaps this site would be worthless as a technical resource.

FYI, a modern Civic SI will wax the floor with every stock non-L98 thirdgen out there (excepting Firehawk/TTA). I've seen stock Civic Si' with a Tune go 14.1s. This is a 4 door Civic SI and it ran 14.1 @ 99mph.

To all the trash talking thirdgen nutswingers, grow up, realize your car isn't all that anymore and mod it appropriately so it can compete in todays world. The rest of us who live in the real world laugh at all of you even while we continue to rock our Thirdgens and get admiration from people for it.

Ignorance, man.

Total ignorance.
I doubt any civic near you has real neon gas lights

Apparently dank refers to a totally different thing in Idaho lol its a common term associated with a certain illegal plant around here lol

Idk wtf its gonna take for people to just realize that any car can be fast. Stop hating, stop talking crap and just let it be. I highly doubt anyone new coming into this has sifted through every single page of this because if they have they would realize this thread has almost every hypothetical what if stock for stock bs argument in it and every time a group of individuals adds 4 more pages of back and forth banter they get tired of it and stop replying. LET THIS THING DIE ALREADY!

You guys insult me for commenting on a thread; more importantly, for defending myself on a thread?

You guys seem to be right, though...

... there aren't too many rocket scientists on this thread, and it makes me regret posting in it after reading some of the things said.

That being said, this thread should die.

Immediately.

i thought you where referring to a dodge "neon" in your first post.. yes this tread is pretty much ****.. original poster was kind of a dumbass... I dont get why every one refers to import cars as "rice" the term is way over used, and from what it was meant, and that is to someone being a POSER, cheap visual modifications trying to appear that the driver and their car is "bad *** street racer"... theres posers in the camaro community as well? ive seen irocs with under glows and 24 inch chrome rims blasting there subs with their faded paint and rust spots v6 with flowmaster pos white trash... I love imports and camaro but theres always fools that ruin both

The word "dank" around here is used to describe potent marijuana.

You guys are arguing with a 16 year old. He knows better than all of us.... (but if you search his recent topics; he has just put a new door on his car and now it won't open and he doesn't know why). He is a professional driver although he doesn't have his license yet. His Trans Am doesn't have a motor in it but it is going to show up every 4 banger at his school.

He more than likely will wrap his car around a tree/telephone pole or hurt an innocent bystander due to his stupidity. I'd race him down the "1320" in my truck and blow his doors off

Thanks, I appreciate the warmth you give off to a kid who just wants to have some fun.

I bet people love you for your seriousness.

Their are plenty of posters in here that give 3rd gens a bad rep. Don't get me wrong I bleed Chevy orange and am not into the import scene or necessarily like how they sound but some of those cars are very fast.

Re: why do honda/import "tuner" people think their stuff is fast

cabt always bitch about the younger guys though.

when i first had my liscence and my first l98 powered iroc i did tons of stupid stuff that most here would say gave 3rdgen owners a bad name , i.e street racing, doing donuts in the middle of the road, weaving in and out of traffic on the highay while doing 10-20mph moe then the speedlimit.

i was also guilty of being like most kids and thinking my car was the fastest thing on the road till i got humbled real fast by a few fast imports

but u get older and u learn real fast lmao

Re: why do honda/import "tuner" people think their stuff is fast

Too true. I'm not really all that old but I have matured quiet a bit. I still find myself doing donuts in intersections and trying to get quick cars to play with me at traffic lights from time to time.
My two daily drivers cover the strip in 100 and 114 MPH but I have zero points/warnings on my license.

I'm pretty deep into an LT1 build that should trap 135-140. I have no plans of driving it on the road though.

What have I done to any of you?

Honestly, I make a post about wanting a car that's faster and more stylish than a Civic.

Next thing you know, everyone's insulting me, my intelligence, my mother, my driving skills...

And telling me that people like me make third gens look bad?

People like YOU make third gens look bad! Look at everything you just posted! Aimed at someone who's done nothing but make an innocent post and defend it...

What's wrong with you?

This is a touchy topic man. This thread has been going on forever and the "smarter guys" here have all dealt with some pretty stupid people during the length of it. I personally didn't think you were coming off as a chevy loving nutswinger, but just be easy with what you say in here about imports or you will get jumped on, lol. Give respect where it's due to other cars that deserve it.

I am still amused that you thought actual gas neon lights were on a car

I don't keep track of that kind of thing, even though it was probably LED lights or something of the sort.

Everyone refers to them as neon, so why not.

Re: why do honda/import "tuner" people think their stuff is fast

i owned an awd 96 talon that i built, it was a 2.3l stroker and i ran 32psi on a fp3065 and e85. on the dyno it put down over 500awhp. to say the least it would walk all over anything on the street from a dead stop or roll. it was an auto and i could build close to 20 psi off the line. i never had a chance to take it to the track but similar set ups were in the 10.7 to 11.20 range

that being said, anything can be fast if you dump enough money into it. fast, cheap and reliable... you can only pick 2

i had roughly 12k in my talon for reference and i ended up parting it out. i can only imagine where my camaro would be if i put all that money in it. procharged? turbo? who knows.

but 99% of kids around here put a "cold air intake" and a "huge muffler" on their honda or acura and think they have a 8 second car

When you consider, and/or factor in the price of a new car; fast, cheap and reliable is essentially very easy to have with a 3rd gen...

Re: why do honda/import "tuner" people think their stuff is fast

in terms of being fast, some people may think that 13s is fast. i dont really consider a car to be "fast until its hit bottom 12s. to get there takes a good set of flowing heads and a decent cam on a 350 plus fueling upgrades and a tune if efi. so its safe to say a couple grand. which i think is pretty expensive. but if 13s is fast and you can get there with a couple bolt ons go for it.

ii guess it really comes down to terms of putting quality parts in the car and what you think is fast. your perception and mine are completely different

As far as I'm concerned, I don't race for an ET, I race for trap speed, because they are more consistent. Every tenth in your sixty foot effects the ET a good three tenths, and if you don't know how to launch, you won't even know you have a low twelve second car unless you build yourself an eleven second car and baby it out of the hole. That being said, I can buy an L98 F-Body these days for very cheap, open up the stock heads and TPI myself for essentially nothing, open up the stock cast exhaust manifolds for essentially nothing, make my own AFPR out of the stock one for essentially nothing, get a better cam for a hundred dollars (couple of hundred if its a factory roller setup), get a higher stall speed for a couple of hundred, burn my own prom to dial it all in, and run easy low 12's for very very cheap, while remaining just as reliable as stock. That is the epitome of being fast, cheap and reliable. But hey, what do I know...
