Highway runs?

Anybody else do these? I prefer it over yawn inspiring stoplight grand prix.

Yeah, I had one a lil earlier this morning around 1AM when I got off work. Had to deal with some fool and his Integra.

With a manual, I love running people on the highway. But, when I had an auto, not so much. Stoplights were better suited with the auto.

Re: Highway runs?

It's fun...but around here where I live that's for the import guys...They ONLY will race from a highway roll....never from a stop. I don't know for sure why they like that, but they are annoying anyways....My favorite is when they claim to run an 11 or 12 in 1/4....or faster...you race them, spinning tires, missing a gear or two, and still beat them by 10 car length's....freeway or from a stop...hell maybe even backwards

That's why I like messing with them on the interstate. They "think" the have the upper hand by launching on a roll.

You'd think they'd think they'd have the upper hand from a dig, seeing as some of the faster imports (DSM, vr4) have AWD, but what ever, it must me a r!cer thing, something i guess we will never understand and proud of it...

They left out the fact that, although it was a 1/4 mile long race, they were starting at 60mph on the interstate!

One nice thing about a 9 inch, easy to swap gears I have a set of 3.50 gears along with the 4.56 ones. Still, I'm not really fond of highway runs because of the idiots driving on the same road.

No. Not with the TPI's crazy high rpm horsepower.

My bone stock 92 RS 305/TBI/3.08 open rear, could hit 125mph or so......After I "fixed" the ECMs speed limiter function.

4500 is where is starts (or stops? ) but the gearing is what will determine what the speed is, where that kicks in. Obviously, a 2.73 would have a higher top end than a 3.73, at the same RPM.

4500 , true, but a say a carbed care with 3.73 can push to 5500-5700 (not real recomended to hold out to long at that speed) where as the 2.73 with a tpi can only push to 4500-5000 but with better top end gears.

Okay, say the L98 could push and **** at 5500 and make power all the way up, how much better you think the track times would be?

The intake runners. Between being very small in diameter & their "tunnel ram-like" length, they don't breath very well at high RPMs. Hone them out & they breathe better at higher rpms...Siamese them & they get a little better. But shorten them like LT1s and they'll wake up even better.

But upper rpm breathing comes at a price, and I'm not talking about your wallet. Gain some on the top end & you lose some on the bottom end.

not true. a stock LT1s torque peak comes at 2400rpms... for comparison, a TPIs peak comes at 3200rpms. so the LT1 give up NOTHING in the torque department. my old stock 93' Vette dynoed 306rwtq... doing the math for power loss through the manual trans means it was making 360ftlbs at the crank. thats not giving up ANYTHING in the low end department

the short runner intake doesnt mean "high end". its actually an anti-tuning effect that makes power all across the rpm range of the motor. theres no "sweet spot". a TPI intake manifold is tuned to provide power in a small rpm range, its sweet spot is about 2800 - 4400 rpm

changing just the intake, especially just one part of it like the runners, will not make your car a top end performer. the intake/heads/cam were all designed to make power in a specific rpm range, and changing out just one of these components will not change the cars powerband all that much. if you put a carb and a tunnel ram on a stock L98, you wont make power all the way to 7k rpm. will it make more power at that rpm than a stock TPI intake? sure... but the gains will be minimal. to really see an improvement, youd have to change out the stock heads and cam to take advantage of the new intake manifold

all this goes a long way in saying it takes more than just an intake swap to make the TPI motor a top end performer
