Re: How many current or ex-ricers on here? dont lie!
i'll admit I kinda riced out my wife's car a bit. 2002 Hyundai Elantra with CAI and red grills. I hate white cars and that's what she has. her favorite color is red so I through some of that on there. Painted the engine covers white and red too. it actually looks pretty clean. just a splash of color on a blank canvas. THe CAI was to bypass the 20 feet of baffling in the fender (yeah feet. the air inlet goes to a big box inside the fender that is basically just a cubic maze.) it actually helped the gas mileage enough that a trip that used to take 1/2 tank only takes a 1/4 on the highway now. sounds a little louder but without the fartcan it doesn't sound *****. luckily it's getting replaced with a gm in the next few months. only car i've ever owned that wasn't GM and that's because her dad traded her olds 88 in and gave her his old car.(before we were married) oh and I cover the corner scrapes with my Camaro parts/ racing stickers too. (she's the kind of driver that gives women a bad name.)

Re: How many current or ex-ricers on here? dont lie!
I've only owned 2 foreign cars ( that actually ran) in my whole life. One was an 85 Audi 5000 5 cylinder and a 89 Acura 2.7 V6 Legend 2 door. Both of them were the most expensive to fix pieces of crap I've EVER owned. The Acura ran great and was a fun comfortable car but 1 month after I bought it it started to fall apart. A coolant temp sensor alone was $250 !!!!. I traded that damn thing for a 94 Jeep Cherokee and I miss that thing. Some damn punk kid stole the Jeep and totalled it. grrrr!! lol

I've never owned anything non-GM (seven of them), but my 96 firebird probably would have had some extra lights and "modz" when I was in highschool and my first year of college if I actually had the money left over after the insurance.

I drive a lot of rice. I have a 250hp V6 manual trans solara and I have owned an accord both as daily drivers. Both cars have tasteful fairly quiet performance exhausts and other bolt ons no wings or over sized rims. I also have 3 jab bikes one at 170hp another at 116hp and the last at 80hp. So you tell me.

Re: How many current or ex-ricers on here? dont lie!
I had one other car that (I though) was fast. My 98 Mercury Tracer, I'd never own a forgein car so this was as close to rice as I got. 2.0L of pure American Muscle!

It had an intake on it, thicker rear swaybar, and a muffler that sounded decent without the high rpm buzz. It was a split port induction engine, and I'd modified it to open the secondaries at lower rpm's than stock.
I always wanted a ZX2, and looked at a few before buying the bird.

I think everyone goes through a ***** phase. Your young and see the civics and celicas as cool. Fortunatley MOST of us grow up and learn that an economy car is an economy car, no matter how expensice your rims are or how tall the wing on ther back is.
The curves of an American muscle/pony car will never challeneged by the spartan, boring, blobs of clay put out by Japan.

Re: How many current or ex-ricers on here? dont lie!
My husband works for GM and it has provided us with a good living, so I will not buy foreign. The closest thing I have ever owned to foreign was a 1990 Geo Storm (fun little car- too bad they rot away) and a Canadian-made 04 Grand Prix GT. Every new car I have ever bought has been made in Michigan- 2001 Olds Alero, 2007 Mustang, and a 2010 CTS AWD. They have all served me well. In keeping with tradition, probably the next car I buy will be a GMC Acadia or Chevy Traverse (all Lansing-built). I love supporting our local economy. No foreign cars for me.

Well I know I never went thru a ***** phase maybe it was growing up I was around Dodge Chargers, Dusters, Demon's. Firebirds, and Camaros, Chevelles. I knew I was going to get a dodge charger, and then I got my Camaro as a daily and I was set. Don't get me wrong if I wanted a small car that gets good mileage I'd look to Honda or Toyota. Thier quality trumps any other asian imports and most domestics...(unfortunately)

And your right it is an opinion. An opinion off of what I see.
And when Honda outsells Mitsubishi 20 to 1 (an UNINFORMED #) Thier probably going to have a few more problems.
I dont like you attacking me for no reason. This whole website is full of opinions.

Re: How many current or ex-ricers on here? dont lie!
I realize that, I'm a service writer and it's about even the # of jobs that come in between American cars and imports. I DO know though that imports are (on the whole) much more difficult to work on. My techs love to see hondas come in because they know they pay much more for the same jobs. And I like em too because the parts I get to sell are more expensive.
Also, the number of cars doesn't matte when its a %... If toyota builds 100 cars and 10 have defects then it's a 10% defect rate, if mitsu makes 10 cars and one has a defect, its a 10% defect rate.
I wasn't attacking, I was stating a fact. saying imports are better is incorrect, and even if it was sometimes correct, that's still painting with a broad brush, and making rash generalities.

Re: How many current or ex-ricers on here? dont lie!
Rice is relative. I consider a 2nd gen Camaro with highjackers, white letter tires on chrome steel rims and a whale tail rear spoiler as much of a ***** approach as any vehicle on 22" rims (yes, even if they come stock) which I consider as much rice as a spoilered out Japanese vehicle with 14" rims and overstretched tires, which in turn I consider about as much rice as about 90% of the tuning attempts from Belgium and France (who have very tight restrictions to wht is allowed to mod and what not, so no offence intended) or all the shaved VW's and Audi's from Germany, or the so-called ratted look from the UK.
Many tasteless examples can be found using Google.
I owned a few Hondas (all completely stock) and my previous car was an RX7 (not stock)
The RX7 had a fully adjustable suspension setup, I was in the process of dropping the turbo setup, it had a 3" cat back exhaust and aftermarket brakes. Furthermore I dropped about 200 lbs of weight.
I did replace the stock wing by an adjustable ducktail setup because with the weight reduction the rear started getting light.
If maintenance wasn't as expensive on these cars, and if it would be somewhat easier to find a good 1986 - 1989 RX7 I'd pick one up right away.
(in that case I would use that as a daily and only have the camaro registered over the summer since rotary's only pay $150 in taxes in Germany where the Camaro is close to $1000 a year)
@ K-slice, stating that imports are more difficult to work on is paintig with the same broad brush. I could pick up a Honda 5 speed manual tranny for under $100 here and have it installed in a few hours. I have not tried the automatic tranny on my Camaro yet, but finding a trans that fits means spending at least $1500 and finding someone that can fit it means driving quite a few miles for me. Finding someone who can rebuild my transmission with stock components menas at least a 100 mile trip and at least $2500 in cost.
Being born in the Netherlands I have to consider everything (apart from Spyker, Donkervoort and DAF and maybe the one or other Mitsu and Volvo) as an import. In that sense I did a lot of work on quite a range of imports. I did not find any of that work more daunting then working on my current car, and parts were in the same price range or cheaper for me.

Re: How many current or ex-ricers on here? dont lie!
Honda seems to be one of the easier import's to work on IMO. Mitsubishi and Nissan seem to be some of the worst. But that's just my opinion.
Re: How many current or ex-ricers on here? dont lie!
I just got a 95 240sx and its crazy fast, performance parts are dirt cheap, its way lighter than my iroc and it handles crazy good(coil over suspension) Next week i am going to turbocharge it ($500 dolars for a complete new turbo kit) safely raising the HP up to over 320... Maybe Im mistaken, but im pretty sure you cant get that much power out of a V8 for that cheap..Also its RWD and can go side ways!-A real driver respects good engineering regardless of the make..

I have a 260hp crate 350 that will easily get to 320hp via a simple cam swap for half of what your turbo costs, and that is one of the lazier V8s.
And don't forget about torque, I could probably get close to 400 ft-lbs with that setup. You would be around what? 250 ft-lbs? -- although the 240sx will make some of that by being 600 pounds lighter. Don't get me wrong, they are great handling cars, and look cool too.
A quick search on Ebay, shows several sbc 350 twin turbo kits for around $900 claiming 750+ hp. Not sure about reliability, will most definitely need to build the bottom end up. But still pretty good $/hp ratio before everything goes boom!
Re: How many current or ex-ricers on here? dont lie!
True, but here in CA theres so many stupid emission laws you cant do that kinda stuff to a V8...IDK what the laws are like where you are, but here you can do pretty much what ever you want to little "*****" imports...Ive got nothing against american cars(I have 2 irocs and a 67 RS camaro)..I just like all cool fast cars..

You most certainly can get that much power out of a V8 for cheaper!

Re: How many current or ex-ricers on here? dont lie!
My redline is only 11000 but I put down 160 rwhp and have no problems hitting 0 to 60 in the low 2s. I could still probably go buy back my old 1000rr or my old hayabusa with the motor I had punched out to 1500cc making 212 rwhp runing low 8s but I am old and married now so I had to cut the collection down to 3 the 82 magna with 82 hp the HRC86 vfr750 with 130hp and the 170 plus hp slightly modded vfr1200

All 3 of my bikes are rice and my regular car is rice. I drive jap when I want comfort reliability and decent power with decent gas mileage. The Trans Am I just drive for fun and to play with some V8 Horsepower. I don't trust many American products for daily drivers.

Re: How many current or ex-ricers on here? dont lie!
I've owned a 97 Eagle Talon and a 90 Eclipse GSX. Talon was my first import 2nd year of college and yes it was "riced" out a bit. No huge wings or useless hood scoops or w.e but did have the annoying exhaust. The GSX was a year later and was basically kept stock except for front mount intercooler, intake and exhaust. I wouldnt consider it riced out but anyone who sees the 4" muffler automatically assumes "look, another *****. retard". My college buddies got me pretty much into imports as they had civics, supras, bmw's ect. They looked extremely down on all the ***** crap and soon i did too. I think imports get there awful image from the civic's and such. But IMO, an import done right with good motor work, tune, suspension, ect, are very decent cars able to keep up with our "muscle". For a DD i'm actutally looking for another GSX as they are easy to maintain and upgrade performace wise and are a good ride. Sure, no other car will compare to my 87 Z, (maybe the new 2012 ZL1) but there will always be some form of "rice" in my heart. Oh, and i have a 00 GSX-R if thats considered "rice".

my bird has been the strongest, most reliable of any vehicles i have ever owned, even better than our volvo. After all, don't you think Chevy would have built a reliable motor for their top car (Corvette).
