86 iroc vs del sol with crv engine

today i was giving my friends car an alignment its a 91 z28, l98 motor, automatic, msd ignition, lower control arms and relocating brackets, basically some bolt ons and the car next to me which happened to be my classmates friends car was a cute little del sol. little 2 seater subcompact. i told him it looked cute then he said watch out because this car is fast. and i told him, not even. since stock those cars are pretty slow. anyways he tells me we should race. he said it has a crv block with a type r head. whatever that means. its also stick. then when the real owner came in to see his alignment his friend told him what i said. and hes like "yeah its only a del slow huh?" "this car will beat that piece of ****" and im like whatever, your tiny motor will just spin your wheels at the line. so it got me thinking who will win. i dont want my *** handed to me. since i wanna save the embarassment of getting beat by a barbie dream car. so here are the cars that wed race against the del sol

86 camaro iroc-z
305 tpi with slight porting on the plenum
700r4 transmission with vette servo
edelbrock headers and y pipe
high flow cat
3 inch exhaust to hooker muffler with dual exits
accell ignition coil
beefy rear wheels with street slicks

then my buddies car

91 z28
350 tpi
700r4
lower control arms and brackets
front strut tower bar
all new front and rear springs struts and shocks
k and n filters and airfoil

and the del sol

early to mid 90's del sol
with a crv block and type r head

my guess is that both the 86 iroc and the 91 z28 will take the del sol off the line. and once off the line it will stay in the lead. what do u guys think since im not much of an import guy and have no idea what a crv or type r head is worth in terms of horsepower

Re: 86 iroc vs del sol with crv engine

the combo in the del sol is the budget monster for the honda guys. its a 2L b20 block with the most agressive head avabily for the b series emgine from the factory . one of my friends had that combo in a crx and he was good for mid 14s all day long on street tires with just a traction bar up front. the 2 cars you listed both seem to be good for high to mid 14s so this race is hard to call. but if that del sol has some little extras say cams or nitrous you are looking at a loss.

For one a crv is a little sport utility vehicle. If he said crX, i could believe him. I know not to underestimate 4 cyls. I had a 90 accord with an f22 swap and it was a quick lil honda. Also i've never heard of a "type r" head. maybe there is one, but Type R is usually your typical walmart brand racing equipment. Rice-additive.

i recently looked it up, and i read somewhere that the crv block which is a b20 has a long stroke length (for a honda) which wont take much RPM's unless built for it. while the head is supposed to be a very good head.

from what i could tell on the car, it looked stock on the outside. no nitrious. and just street tires.

ill be adding lower control arms and 1.6 ratio roller rockers on my 86. should this push it over in my favor alittle? keeping in mind ill be on street legal slicks

del sol is 2400ish lbs, stock b20 130lb/tq. hate to say it, it will be a close race, giving the edge to the del sol. it just has the power to weight ratio that the 86 or 91 dont have.

Re: 86 iroc vs del sol with crv engine

depending on if the honda owner can drive or not should make for an interesting race. definitely don't under estimate the del slo though buddy of mine had one with msd an intake and that thing ran like a lil champ with no give. but you and your buddies 3rd gens should be able to off the line and maybe up top.

the long stroke was used for a increased tq number. the engine is after all a lil SUV engine. put it this way i have a 89 iroc 350 tpi with full bolt ons and my buddy who has almost the same set up was a lil less then a car behind

nah bro dont do it my friend has a 94 z28 with magnaflow exhaust, cold air intake and a shift kit 4l60e he raced a civic with the same crv motor and they were dead on all the way so unless you can get maybe headers and a cam you probably be dead even after. i did the vortec heads, cam, accel ignition, full length headers 1.6 rockers and old cheap tires and my friends lt1 cant keep up with my tpi 305

I'd say just go for it. if you win, you win. if you lose, you lose. don't sweat it. theres always going to be someone out there faster than you no matter how fast you are so might as well just have fun with it.

Re: 86 iroc vs del sol with crv engine

Before i get flamed, yes i work at a honda dealer, yes i am argueing in this particular instance that the honda will win... no i dont like hondas, (my opinion ftw) i dont own one as a driver or a keeper, and no i dont even like hondas. fwds at all for that matter.
heck even toyota makes a pretty decent v8. hopefully they will make a car for it.

anyways.

a del sol weighs 2522 lb. think about that. yes they suck, yes every 16yo blonde thinks they want one. but a b20 and a type r head are not hard to come by, and they make 190hp to the wheels in anything. and the engines are easy to swap, everything is small and for some reason honda owners talk/complain alot on the internet.... IDK.... but as time goes on, the parts for these imports are sadly getting cheaper. the arguement of honda fwd cost to speed engine parts being retarded is fading. we are no longer seeing 4-5k builds to hit shitty 1/4s in mommys car, sadly. but i dont feel cool driving a civic. hopefully (i havent done reseach on it because anyone i know with an import isnt THAT fast) its expensive to get them into 11-12s. and there are countless articles in hotrod on cheap go fast chevy engines. mostly carbed. but w/eva.

Re: 86 iroc vs del sol with crv engine

Sadly im going to have to agree not to count out this lil del slo.Right now my car sits slightly stock 350tpi swap with built 700r4,2800 stall, headers and full exhuast, pulleys, injectors, intake and suspension mods.My co-worker has a 95 integra with a swap motor, cant recall which one but its not a k20.His motor is slightly stock, cam gears,vtec,intake,exhuast,5spd.he can drive for being 19 and i give him big props for that.

It makes for a damn good race between us..me killing him off the line having posi 3.23 out back.but when it comes to 3rd and up is where its damn close ill beat him by a fender or so ..or lose by a bumper depending on launch. He is building a k24 looking for high boost with lsd and im building my hsr 355 supercharged and maybe nitrous setup for next yr and lie them up again.

Thought the crv's were slow with those motors stock because of their weight, they had decent torque, slap that into a del sol that weighs nothing..do even small work to the motor, cam gears, vtec head, computer and tune,lsd..and you would be shocked when it tears you a new one from a dig.I love my transam but i know many honda guys that can drive and build them right to kill many cars in all rpm ranges and they look like a** lol.I never judge a honda when it pulls up wanting to race..they can be true sleepers..fart can and all.

Line em up..race and post the results.Good luck. For some insurance.. nothing beats a nice 75shot lol.easy to stick in their for any sign of a loss..spray his a**

That del slow would probably beat you guys. I'm not much of a honda person but I hear alot of talk about the CRV motors turning some 13 second 1/4s.
