im not feeling too confident now
, maby i should just leave that race alone until i do some more mods to my car. because our other buddy has a 2010 camaro ss/rs 2, and iv played around with him in my car lol. i actually (believe it or not) took that camaro up to about 15 mph, then he was GONEEE haha. plus them new camaros have that trq management like no other, so thats prolly the only reason i can get out of the hole faster than that. but anyways like i was saying, my buddy with the stang iv been telling you about, raced my other buddy with that 2010 camaro and was only 4 or so car leangths behind him on a stop light to stop light race.

Re: Can i beat a 4.6L mustang???
i know that a stock gt couldnt touch that car, but i was comparing on how much my car could hang with the new camaro as much as the mustang did. 4 leanghts is ALOT for a stop light race but if it was my car doing the same race agains the new camaro, it might be 5 leanghts lol. idk. so maby i should race my buddy in his new camaro to see how much more he pulls on me then when he raced the mustang. cuz i KNOW his car will smoke mine, so i aint worried about losing, im worried on how much i lose BY. that will tell me how close i will be against the stang.

Re: Can i beat a 4.6L mustang???
Dont be nervous, just race him, stop thinking about lengths, and times, just do it, because its the only way you will know. ive told you my experience of beating just a longtube header straight pipe exhaust no muffler 03 gt mustang with 4:10 gears and it was a dead heat race down to the wire with my car.
Re: Can i beat a 4.6L mustang???
i have a 91 rs camaro with a 350 out o a van and its carberated and i smoked my dads 99 4.6 up until about 105 mph my car is stock just flowmasters and no cat......oh! sorry 4:10s on a limited slip
Re: Can i beat a 4.6L mustang???
Alright, I'm from Indiana... If you want light shed on the situation then I will be glad to assist you in this matter.
I have a 1991 5.0L Mustang GT and a 2004 Mustang GT. You can choose which you want to race

I will say this, I have raced 80's camaro in both the 91 and the 04.
From a dig and on the interstate.
the only car i fear.... is an LS1.
a 305ci is no problem to beat... in fact it's really not a race... the 4.6L's tq is less at lower rpm... but the gearing in the tranny makes up for that...
Traction control... LOL I turn mine off... if you know anything about racing... No one uses T/C to launch. It's the drivers job... not the computer... it will bog down the car too long, you would be better off to let the tires spin.
I've raced LT1's and I pull on them also, granted neither of my cars are 100% stock... but they are very lightly modded.
WS6 and LS1 are the only people i struggle with.
You will need to take that 305 out and drop a 350 in to do anything with that car in my honest opinion. which you stated you were going to work on.
Then i believe you will have yourself a powerful ride.

Re: Can i beat a 4.6L mustang???
alright everyone, heres the update. i just raced him last night, along with two of my other buddies. the one with 2010 ss camaro, another buddy in his 98' grand prix sc 3.8, the buddy with his moms strang of course, and me and my iroc. we all just went running them out on some huge nice country roads. we mainly went cuz the guy in the grand prix wanted to race the mustang. but me and the 2010 camaro just raced for ***** and giggles while following the other two. suprising enough, i stayed dead even with the 2010 camaro up until maby 40-50 mph lol. then it was a differant story. (and he just put a full exhaust on it and got his a/f ratio re-tuned in). oh and that grand prix kind of suprised me lol, it pulls about the same as me and stang but has hard time hookin up on launch.
anyway, i raced the mustang at a 15mph roll. i manually locked my tclc, placed it in 1st so i would start out in 2nd from the git go. 3 honks, and we took off. i was about a nose ahead on the launch for about 2 seconds, then i was over HALF a car ahead, then it STAYED. when we reached about 70-80mph, he ever so slightly started picking up and eventually edged me out by 90mph. then i let off, and haha my buddy with the 2010 camaro was just riding our asses the whole time and he said he had to keep peddling it or he woulda rear ended us while we were racing. but once i let off, i opened up a gap while the mustang kept goin and the camaro just squeezed in and passed us both lol.

Re: Can i beat a 4.6L mustang???
Like i said in many of my post in this thread, it would be dead even, or half a car like you said, and 90 him pulling up on you is normal, the only way you have been able to keep the half car is if the car had a pretty similar tranny gear ratio as the mustang does, the high end is where the 4.6s make up on us, but like i said, its a DEAD EVEN race.

Re: Can i beat a 4.6L mustang???
Yeah thats sounds about right where it should be, I was actually in the very same situation a few years back b4 I got my GT,
my buddy had a full exhausted 2000 GT with Intake/Tune/ 3.73 gears and a few supporting mods while I had my Intake/cam/full exhaust LB9 Z28 and we had a few encounters.
From a stand-still, my Z28 would always leave him out of the hole, and hold its own for a bit ( about a 1/8th or so)
Now From a roll, now that's a different story, as I do have mods that do help my upgraded TPI, its still not enough to pull on my buddys GT once his car gets right into his powerband while I'm outta RPM. so any pulls after 70 and on up, its no use.
But no worries man, like everyone been saying, Its a toss-up between the two, and plus even if the outcome not in ur favor, it always gives you more reason to improve.

great job. cool race. I love seeing Thirdgens and Stangs race. It more American than apple pie, lol. But yes, TPI powered thirdgens do there work out of the hole and up to about the 1/8. So next time you run anyone, keep the race off the line (practice launching) and keep it short and sweet. You will have the Mustang and even the 4thgenners scrathing there heads at why a 305 beat me stop light to stop light.
And to the Mustang guy ^, WANNA RUN ?

on this without knowing your mods. A lightly modded 91 has no problems with LT1's? Sorry but no. You must be racing toolbags that can't drive. What are you mods on both cars?

I don't know what to say about that one, even I wonder back then once I did all the Intake/cam/exhaust work on it if I could pull LT1s with my modded LB9, let alone an LS1
As to NY3RDGEN, Sure man, but which one? My Camaro or GT?

I got a 91 z28 with a 350 TPI. i'm running long tube headers and open exhaust otherwise bone stock. I lined up beside an '01 mustang with a v6 and got my *** spanked. he was running 4.10 gears and flowmasters but he was stock too. i evened out a bit after about 65mph, but there's something about those newer mustangs.
WTF?? dude i raced an 03 v6 mustang with a 92 RS and i spanked the crapp out of him,, and 305 tbi are not fast..this race was actually set up.. not pulled up to a street light.. we actually raced 3 or 4 times on a closed street and he got wooped EVERY TIME.. something iz wrong wit ur z28

i think you have more horsepower. i got a 305 tpi at 215hp of the line but like 175 with auto. My rings are gone, going to rebuild. but you ought to have more. Are you saying its 225hp at wheel. thats awesome. Try checking your tps voltage if its running rich. thats good youre getting a fuel injection cleaning. And If i might add. watch the whole jiffy lube process. they actually work harder if youre standing there. No doubt your car is faster. maybe add some transmission shift kit, and some anti slipp conditioner

Re: Can i beat a 4.6L mustang???
The only mod I had before I rebuilt her was a cataback and the only thing that beat me was a Lancer EvoVII. Raced an orange '04 GT 5-speed from every gear just about and took it easily, thats with a drivetrain that needed an overhaul. A 305 should at least keep up if not win. Raced the 'stang after the evo kicked my butt!!

ratings from the factory are at the flywheel. not wheels. and the l98 i believe is 240 "crank hp". and it depends on year as well. go to "Home" at the top of the menu list here on thirdgen.org, then go to camaro technical" and you will find factory ratings and specs. its right under your noses lol"

It a 1987 that the site and a bunch of other places say it is 225 hp. I know the site says the rating but I never saw anything specifying where the horsepower rating was coming from.

Re: Can i beat a 4.6L mustang???
Im going to agree with the Mustang guy on this one folks. I am both a Camaro AND Mustang guy... Having several of both (want to see pics of them?) and the 4.6 GT with a few mods should take an LT1. This is confirmed, fact! I recently just sold my 1998 GT with a full PI swap and ALL the bolt ons, through an auto with 3.73's it would absolutely murder stock LT1's. A PI swap entails, stock "Power Improved" 4.6 SOHC cylinder heads, cams and intake from a 99-01 (windsor) 02-04 (romeo) depending on your block.
The auto 4.6's give up substantial HP to the 5 speed cars, about 30-40hp @ the wheels! No joke, the 4R70w soaks up that much!
Being that your buddies Moms' GT is auto and stock and your LB9 is modified you have a slight chance taking him out for the first 660ft. given you launch right. The thing about the 4.6's is they are pretty well built from the start and there is not all that much room for improvement. A full bolt on 4.6 5 speed with ported heads and cams (were talking PI not NON PI) will put down about 300-335hp depending on head porter and cams. I remember HiTech cams being nice as well as Nick McKennys cams. Auto versions put down less like stated above and usually make 260-290hp NA. with all the goodies. The fastest stock headed 4.6 GT is out of Dallas and runs low low 12's, and the owners name is Trevor. You can look it up on youtube. Modular Misfits is the board for serious 4.6 racers, they run mid 11's NA.
Edit... Just go run him! Im curious to see what has to be done to a 305 TPI LB9 to= an auto 4.6. If my geeky calculations are correct, a full exhaust, with runners, port matched upper, FPR and free mods should run with an auto 4.6. Or about a mid to low 14.

So a heads/cam/rear and ALL bolt on Mustang would murder a stock LT1? I'd hope so.
The fact is the 96-98 4.6 Mustang is a complete and utter dog. Even if the OP has a LB9 there's no reason he should lose unless he's a horrible driver. It might be close but he should still eek out a win. Even if he doesn't we're talking 10yr newer technology, he shouldn't even be a contest.

What gets me is sure, the heads are aluminum, but its still got a 3.5" bore. The 305 should be able to do better than that, since its bigger right? At least, thats idea. I bet its got a lot to do with the fact its a square engine. I bet that 305 stroker is a good idea after all.

Now, I'm no expert, but I think this would be a good race.
I'm not saying you'll win, but I'm definitely not saying you'll lose; I think it'll be real close.
It seems that a lot of times our cars are underestimated, even by us. Sure, he might have a bit more hp than you, but you have to figure, he's running on a newer motor than you as well, and his car isn't near as light as yours.
Your car is making more torque than him and at lower RPM's, this seems to get overlooked a lot.
Could he beat you? Yes.
Do I think you have an equally fair chance at winning? Yes.
I say give it a go, if you lose just shake his hand, tell him he raced well, and go on with your day. If you win, do the exact same thing.

I would hope a mustang with all those parts would beat a stock LT1. I ran an automatic Mach 1 with the 4 valve engine and a LT1 yesterday. I got the LT1 all the way down the track. I took the Mach one past 1,000'. This was into a 15 mph head wind driving my quad cab Ram.

Re: Can i beat a 4.6L mustang???
I would hope a mustang with all those parts would beat a stock LT1. I ran an automatic Mach 1 with the 4 valve engine and a LT1 yesterday. I got the LT1 all the way down the track. I took the Mach one past 1,000'. This was into a 15 mph head wind driving my quad cab Ram.

Especially when its stripped down to 5,180 lbs with driver, has drag radials with an effective 4.47 gear ratio compare to stock 3.55s. Then toss in its a 5.7 Hemi with cam, long tube headers, 3" duals, making over 300 RWHP and its pretty easy to pull on one.

Re: Can i beat a 4.6L mustang???
if you have an auto and your racing from a dig and you have a 350 tpi, i think you can get him
i raced my old 98 gt with a 04 pi motor and a t45,king cobra clutch, cai, custom tune injectors and long tubes......this mustang dynoed at 289 rwhp and it was on nitto drag radials
my 89 iroc has a l98 that smokes and a t5 with a car quest clutch.....but it has longtubes, ignition, and a custom burnt chip. i raced them on half worn out fuzion tires lol
i babied it off the line and they beat me by a tenth, i probably could have gained .5 if i could rape it off the line and hook up.
2v mustangs are gay in stock form, ive owned three before i bought my diesel.

Re: Can i beat a 4.6L mustang???
It would be close. Id free up some of the wasted power that doesn't go to the wheels with better torque arms, underdrive pulleys, etc. Then you'd probably be a shooin to win. Friggin s tangs. I hate em. There's a saying "mustangs are like tampons, every ***** has one."

Re: Can i beat a 4.6L mustang???
If you've got a healthy L98 with mods/tuning done, good tires, good abilities to launch & maybe shift (if you've put a 5 speed in your car by any chance?) then you should beat him. Honestly, Mustang's get so much hype and I know they're fast when modded right, with a good driver, etc. But I've raced 3 different Mustang's from 3 different generations. The last one was a 2002 Mustang GT with a 5 speed & I crushed him off the line & a 2nd time at the bottom of a hill about to go up.
Yes, have confidence & unless he's got a bunch of mods, you could do it. Then again you may lose too. Too many variables to tell.

Re: Can i beat a 4.6L mustang???
A friend of mine has a 01 Mustang GT 5spd with x-pipe, Borla tails, and 3.23 gears and ran in the 1/8th a 9.0 to my 9.8 in my 88 305 TPI Auto GTA. All I had done at the time was Airfoil, and 2 3/4 exhaust from manifolds back.
