Just lost to a Chevy Aveo.
A bright yellow one too....
Long story short, I'm waiting at a red light bumping my music (LOUD system, everyone can hear with my windows up), and this guy cruising in his yellow aveo pulls up beside me. He pulls his window down and points at me. I turn off the music and he says "How much horsepower that gas guzzler running?" (he assumed I had a v8), I said "more than you" (thinking it was a smart *** comment...).
Light turns green, I floor it, he does also, he's ahead of me in 1 second.. I have never been so embarrassed in my life. I think I'll stay out of racing until I drop in the 350.

dude.... cool points for manning up and admitting it! Imagine how cool it will be to run into the same guy again and smoke him next time around when you have a V-8 He'll just think you were messing with him last time. That will make it sooo much more fun.

Re: Just lost to a Chevy Aveo.
you do realize you have a 2.8? thats like 130 horsepower in a 3500 lb car. Its not fast at all, most modern minivans will walk all over it. Im not being mean, my 92 is a 3.1 and its a real turd, a classy turd, but a turd all the same

hahah... lol... this is hilarious...
I once lost to an Alero, however, it was not really fair.. he says he had a CAI, Exhaust upgrade, and intake upgrade... all that added plus my semi-plugged CAT, I got owned... side note, this was before I rebuilt the engine and added a few extra goodies...

The 305 in my bird got beat by a 96ish caravan(I was just goin home from the gas station and not really tryin), but it would have beaten me either way. Again Power to Weight Ratio

Re: Just lost to a Chevy Aveo.
Man if I had a 2.8 I'd talk trash because I'd assume tehy'd be able to tell I was being sarcastic. I mean you can tell a v6 car from a v8 car just from the sound. Most people can anyway. But maybe they cant? I always figured they'd be able to anyway.
Re: Just lost to a Chevy Aveo.
I decided to get a 350 after a chevy venture beat me, I don't even know if they were trying to race but I was flooring it, and just couldn't keep up, and I have a guzzling 305 with low miles, oh well, you win some, you lose some.

It's a sad sad car....guess you guys don't want to hear about the time I got beat by a 94 corolla :P
Why GM made such a weak engine in such a heavy car, I don't know...I just hope I don't run into that Aveo again in town. After I got smoked, I quickly made a right turn in some random street and cried ><

hhahahaha... this neeeeeeds to be a sticky... a pick me upper for one of those days...
now that I think about it, I also lost to a 240z a late 80's... however, that time my mechanical problem was my carb, I was flooring it but the car was like it was bogging down, almost felt like I had a clogged CAT...

I feel your pain. When I had my 96 bird 3.8, I remember me and this beat up junky looking CRX with a kid eating cheetos were at a light. We both floored it off the line only to see him blow by me, still eating cheetos. I was very embaressed.

my first third gen was a 2.8 and let me tell you it was just for driving nothing else. if people wanted to race it was not going to happen. but i can't say that's true anymore with my 350.

Re: Just lost to a Chevy Aveo.
I raced a Cobalt LS with an SS wing on the back before, but I don't know if he was really pushing the car, but I was pushing mine, he got ahead of me at first but with my car having highway gears (3.23's) and him having 3.63's his top end sucked and I caught back up to him after we hit about 80, lol.
I feel your pain though, our cars can't handle low end speed or quick acceleration, hills, or modern imports, but they are still some of the bad ***-est cars on the road today, no doubt in my mind

Re: Just lost to a Chevy Aveo.
when i first learned how to drive it was in a 280zx turbo. yeah fun for a 15 year old. but when i built my first third gen, that car was like a moped.
Re: Just lost to a Chevy Aveo.
Makes me sad i drive around in a 97 Camry now. Driving the Family around and my only fun part is trying to get above 33 mpg.
I went from owning a Turbo Car doing high 13s. and even my old Fbody was more fun.

If he wins a race, well, he just humiliated someone. If I were him, I'd race everything I saw, just to embarrass the few I beat. (And in a past lifetime, that was me, in a 1990 Galant with 3 out of 4 forward gears working.)

Re: Just lost to a Chevy Aveo.
every stop giving him a hard time! thats just flat out rude! at least he admitted it hell my durango loss to a newer v6 accord on the highway and i have a hard time admitting it. ok skyset is there anything done to your car? i say if you still have a while tell you put that 350 in do a little to the 2.8. first do a full tune up with decent plug wires and decent plugs and good oil and run seafoam thru the engine. and if you into it do some weight reductions like a/c, heater, whatever but i wont suggest it if its a daily driver. i think you be able to pull that aveo then
sorry if this is usless crap to you but im kinda pissed that some of these people are jerks. good luck anyhow.

Re: Just lost to a Chevy Aveo.
Well we took off at a light and we continued across a bridge and to the next light so it was probably about a mile or so lol we hit triple digits and I would have passed his economy car *** if we weren't coming close to the other intersection.
Just curious but how fast have you guys hit different gears while stepping on it?

I'm due for an oil change on April 1st, which is only a few days away. I've actually been thinking of doing a tune-up since my car needs it, everything from plugs to distributor cap. And yes a lot of time till I drop in the 350. My car is only at 81k original miles, I can't get myself to pulling such a good running engine (despite it's terrible speed
). I made the decision to drive the 2.8 until it dies, that's why I have no problem flooring it everytime I see a chevy aveo beside me Last edited by Skyset; Mar 26, 2010 at 10:59 PM.

Re: Just lost to a Chevy Aveo.
In my car before I started doing anything I had the car at 120-124 ish (fourth). I saw it hit 120 and was going faster but got nervous when I had traffic on the other side of the road. FYI it was about six in the morning on IL 109 (two lane highway) but I havent found any safe spots to try recently. I know that in my auto first gear shifts at around 35 and then around 65 ish for sec and I dont remember for third ... if the roads are clear tomorrow I'll find out.
