New Kid Needs Racing Advice
New Kid Needs Racing Advice
I finally got my bird on the road and I'm loving it. Just wanted to ask all of you the best way to drag. I've done it a couple of times against friends and didn't get the results I should have and I know it was because of me, not my car. I have an automatic 88 GTA 5.7L with one mod being its exhaust. Any pointers are appreciated as I don't want to get spanked by some Civic. Do I floor it right away?
Should I start from 1st?
Should I take out the 10 gauge if they beat me?
Thanks!

Thanks! Well your AT should do almost everything for you. Put it in D (although some people shift from first then too 2nd then lastly D) and hold the brake and press on the gas until about 1300 rpms or 1400 rpms, just right before you do a burn out. Don't just stomp on the gas afterwards, feather her out and shell squeal a tad and you should get a nice jump. Thats about it, looks like your ready to start modding that eh?

I just wanted to explain this more just in case you are very new to this and don't know what stalling is. I'd leave it in D like he said, then while your foot is hard on the brake, start giving it a little gas til your tac reads about 1500. Then when your ready to go let off the brake and sqeeze the gas. Try several ways of flooring it off the line and easing. My 305 can be mashed without tire spin and I'm stock right now running 15.01 at 90mph.
mashing the gas and burning the rubber off your tires may look good but you arent going anywhere, you need to have the tires at the brink of breaking loose but not squealing like a pig being taking to the chopping block
if you hear them start to squeal back off the throttle a tad and roll into it when it stops it is very hard to explain in words and it takes alot of practice also try rolling into the throttle, rest the side of your right foot on the transmission tunnel next to the pedal and roll you foot onto the pedal and most of all have fun,
P.S. dont forget the ammo to the 10 gauge if you do happen to lose...hahahaha

nah its fine, i used to rev my RS up to 1500 and it would sit there just begging for me to let go off the brake, then i eased. i didnt do a brake stand, wtf would i do a huge burnout for before i was about to race? hehe, go at about 100 rpm before your car is about to break lose and keep it there then let go of the brake foot steady on the peddle climb then roll. = 0

just be careful too,I'm not saying there's a whole lot to be afraid of here, nothing that common sense doesn't apply to. my first real race ever was with my '84 T/A freshly rebuilt 700r4 trans. I raced some chick in an '80s supra, I launched ok and hit second hard enough to twist the car almost side ways!!! I didn't panic and just had fun with it,I gave it more gas and fish tailed into third...I remember the look on her face when she caught up...he he , what I'm trying to say here is,I totally didn't expect a carbed 305 to do that! I can see how that could be dangerous if you weren't used to that kind of driving. I always got the best speed by "feathering" the gas and lifting my foot just enough to let it shift harder instead of holding it to the floor the whole time. in fact, I never had to floor the gas unless I needed an OD-3rd to pass some jamoke on the freeway. only my friends would foolishly hold the gas to the floor expecting great things to happen. I will conclude this with my best racing advice ever : you know your car best, don't let your friends race drive your car especially if it is your only car!!! friends are your friends but, maintenance and repair is big $$$$ real friends can understand that.
good luck, don't loose you license, and please always maintain your steering/brakes/tires before going out and buying chrome valve covers. and please don't run over my cat.
