97 firebird vs. 86 trans am

this guy at work has a 97 3.8 firebird and he wants to race me in my 86 305 tpi trans am. both cars are autos and pretty stock cars. his is bone stock and i only have a shift kit. i may or may not have a cold air intake or exhuast by the time of the race. BTW, this is going to be a stoplight to stoplight race. prolly not over 60 or 70mph. i have ridden in his car and it seems slower than mine. but what do u guys think. should i do exhaust or cold air before i race him? or will i beat him stock for stock?

budddy,
u will eat him up! my buddy has a 5 speed manual in his 94 camaro and my 83 305 cfi would beat it! ur car had alot more ***** then his does. ur gonna beat him by about 5 car lengths at least! i figure a 3.8 in utah can run a 8 second 0 to 60 time and i have owned a 86 iroc z28 and that could run about a 7.5 stock! so if u go off that ull be in good shape! tell him ull bet him some money and make a profit off of the race!

First off, recaro, there is a major difference from the 3.4 to the 3.8, about 40 hp and ft/lb.
Kernal, your car has about 10 less hp then his, but you got torque on him. It should be a really good race. Youll probably win, but not by 5 carlengths.

Depending on your rear end set up as well. But you will beat him. It will be close. My cousin has a 01 firebird and he would smoke me by 5 car lengths(of course i have a tbi)
but after the gears he could not even touch me.I think the new camaros the six's have a desent rear end ratio, like 3.08's.
So be careful if you spin he will be on your a#@...good luck

those v6's dont have more horsepower then him either... they sit at around 200 horses i believe.i thought the 305 tpi had like 220 horses? correct me if i am wrong here guys. and the v8 has way more torque which is the big difference in a stop light to stop light race.

Pimpin - the 86 305 TPIs had 190 hp and 285 lb/ft of torque. The 97 3.8 V6 is rated at 200 hp and 240 lb/ft.

If you can, why not? The exhaust will help quite a bit, and the worse you beat him, the better you'll feel. What kind of exhaust are you putting on?

I dunno, my friends mom has a 98 camaro with the 3.8 auto and I can only beat it off the line, its pretty quick. If we race from say a 40mph punch, I can just barely pull it. My guess is you will probably win, but not by much. Only one way to find out for sure!
