305 TBI vs new V6 mustang
305 TBI vs new V6 mustang
Okay there are a ton of V6 stangs around my town and I was wondering if I'd have any trouble taking em. Convertables weigh a whole lot more too, right?

I disagree. First off, Jacks Z-28 don't run. He won't be beating any cars in that for quite a while so forget that possibility. Second, Jacks Firebird is a 305 TBI. 170 HP if Im not mistaken and hasn't he said it has like 110K miles on it, loaded, plus a big sound system? I think between weight, mileage and maybe driver skill, it would be real close, maybe a Ford victory.
One of my friends has a 2000 V6 Convertible Stang/ 5-speed. I reced him with my 86 305TPI/700R4 and beat him off a stop and kept gettting away, but the second time he redlined hsi engine and beat be by half a car or so off the start but I started catching up. Both these runs were with me off idle and him brake standing.
They have a 3.8 that makes 200hp/225tq I think so it would be a good race vs an LO3 Bird, but I think you can take him.

I agree, the 99+ stangs are more than likely faster, especially the 5speeds. The older ones have 30 less HP though, but i have no idea what any of them run in the 1/4. Man, it sucks that we have to be targeting the V6 mustangs and can't really go after GTs. Damn the L03!

I disagree....I just raced a 2000 stang this month. Pretty sure it was a v-6. It was a convertable. I raced him 4 times and beat him every time. Once off the line and the other 3 from a rolling start. I have the LO3 and the only mods i have is underdrive pulleys and MSD wires and coil. Oh and a Flowmaster muff.
I know the 305 isnt the fastest thing on the block, but I think a lot of people underestimate it. First of all, it's true it doesnt put out much HP(170 I think) but it has pretty decent torque on low to mid range. Hopefully I can be improving that 170 HP on mine pretty soon lol.

Yeah, Weight-Power Ratios play a big role in this. Those new stangs are HEAVY! My car stock was 3400-ish pounds, and I took v6 stangs, and killed them. Now I weighed my car at the mill, and it was 3100-ish pounds. Really, 170 horsepower at the motor would be putting us TBI boys in the 18-19 second range. That would be around 140 horsepower at the wheels. I dynoed my TBI car bone stock with 69,000 miles when I got it, and it was 172.6 horsepower at the REAR-WHEELS. 16.5 for a L03 bird? Somehow my car managed a best stock of 15.7. Maybe 16.5 on a 100 degree day. Ever try to ice down your car before you run, it helps out a lot. But 172.6 HP at the wheels would put me around 205 engine hp, and I have beaten a 91 Z28 LB9 Auto (205 horsepower), well we were actually dead even. GM made so many mistakes at the factory, like adding better parts to a crap engine. Maybe a box of camshafts got into the L03 production line? It's probable, other people have reported their timeslips the same as mine. So, don't judge the L03, LB9, L98 without driving it first. I drove a 91 RS, then my WS6, and my car would stomp all over that RS. See, not all motors were made perfectly the same....heck, even GM makes mistakes? I always thought they were perfect...

I actually mad him look pretty stupid because he thought (he gave me that stuck up look) I was just a old camaro.

Well my girlfriend has a 99 v6 stang.. My car takes it pretty easy now but before I did anything to it, her's beat me up to 80 every time.. Until you spend a few grand on an LO3, its racing potential is not very good. Nobody wants to see a ford probe race a station wagon, get the drift?
Now, my girlfriends dad has a 98 Firebird with a V6 and WS6 wheels, it is alot better than her Mustang in every aspect. More interior room (try fitting anybody above 5' tall in the backseat of a stang), better stock system (if that means anything to anybody), more HP and looks a helluva lot better...
I'm not jealous of her at all though, as she has to pay almost $750 a month for car payments and insurance for the next 4 years!!!

hey
tonight i raced a 2000 V6 Mustang Hardtop twice.
Smoked em both times.
i'd say we did about a quarter mile both times.
I've got a 92 305 5.0 RS with T-Tops.
Its only got 170HP but it has 255TQ which is what i believe killed the mustang, bc i beat the crap out of it off the line. Mine is all stock also and 93 Octane.
-92RS
ps- i heard the low hp in my car is a result of the gulf war gas problems. I know that the 4.6 liter mustang's have 255 hp stock. and the 5.0's are close to that from like the 80's. is there anyway to make it have at least 200 hp by messing with the computer or something like that? it just seems like 170hp is low for a 5.0liter engine. with more hp i think it would be a nice match for most cars in its class. any help is much appreciated and thanks.

To say we have 150 or 170 ot 190 is a little inaccurate... GM under rated most of it's engines in the third gens which is to say... 150=170, 170=190, 190=210... This math may be sketchy, but it matches mustang hp #'s nicely and seems to prove true on the dyno... I may be wrong of course as this is very rough and the under rating may only apply to a select few... I have about 20 Hp in mods and as you can see in my sig I have successfully killed a 230 Hp *****... the torque numbers on the Goobaru are kinda week though...

haha, crx, those are funny little cars. My friend has one and he put 17" rims on it and it looks like a matchbox car. They can be pretty damn fast though since they weigh so little. Could they beat a 350 firebird all tricked out?
