I had an 83 (still 1st generation) with the automatic. I raced one with a stick and barely lost to it. If I remember the feel of it correctly it was damn close to what my beater 84 VW GTI feels like. That is, it's probably around a 18-19 second car. The 12A ratary engine that those came with were rated at an even 100 hp.

These are '85 specs: (still first gen)

Hp: 101
Torque: 99 ft-lbs
0-60: 9.9 sec.
Top Speed: 120 MPH
1/4 Mile: 17.6 sec.
Slalom: 57.1 MPH
MPG: 23.1

If there has been any mod to the engine or exhaust, it will be a real mean machine, with turbochargers or an upgrade to the 2.0L 13G engine, it is capable of reaching up to 500+ Hp... it would of course need wheelie bars after about 350 Hp... There are many Rx7's with mid 9 second 1/4 miles.

it's all stock, i assure you. he wants to do some exhaust work to it though, but he's poor too. quit working at food lion because they wouldn't give him time off to go to conneticuit to get the car. how much would the car gain from an exhaust? i don't know anything about rotaries. i got a great pickup and kick with my headers and exhaust.. how responsive is a rotary?

I have heard that a good exhaust can do as much as 30 HP... I'm told there are 3 cats, but I don't know how accurate that is, I would like to know... anyhow, If he had more $$ he could also consider the 13B swap, you gain 34 Hp with the extra .1L (probably because of the FI). Porting and polishing also helps.

A turbo version of the 12A was also made (in Japan of course), the tranny can take the 65 Hp boost, but the clutch is probably a little weak with the turbo... anything over 170 ft-lbs and I'd buff up the tranny. There are lots of aftermarket parts, so its just how much $$ he wants to(can) spend.

one last thing: the 2.0L 13G racing engine doesn't fit that well in the first gens without modification... but it can make 300+Hp N/A. (for $10K)
