Me vs. Thunderbird........

I just got my liscense, and my friend owns an '89 thunderbird. Theres a 5.0l V-8 in it but it's filled with options and he just got it from his grandmother to drive! He wants to race me, I was just wondering if there was any possible way of losing unless I wreck. I have an '83 Berlinetta 5.0l 4-BBL Camaro, just a K&N filter on it, I just got it two weeks ago!!!

He'll probably walk you by a couple cars. They run around a 16.0/low 16 stock. I doubt a LG4 w/ an auto will quite pull that...

What kind of gears do you have in the car. Since you have the berlinetta you don't have any of the spoiler stuff so you'll be lighter. It might be a close race. Is that the LG4, if so and you have 2:73s I would say you would lose.

The flat out truth, you've probably got the 145 Hp LG4 and the Thunderbird probably has a ~200 Hp engine just like the Mustang... he'll walk all over you... If he has auto... and you had a 5 speed and gears, you might stand a chance, because ford autos sucked and most came with 2.73's

What about the '89 Turbo Coupes. My neighbor has a mint turbo coupe...actually the nicest Thunderbird I have ever seen. It is a four banger with turbos. It is a very clean car...and he takes good care of it. It is an automatic. What do you think these cars run? I think I can take him with my TA since i have a 350 w/a shift kit...and some other mods. Well...I was actually thinking about buying this Thunderbird....but decided if I was going to get rid of my TA...that it would be for either another third gen...or if I find a good deal a 4th Gen TA.

don't think they had a turbo coupe in 89, 89 was the start of newer body style(89-97) i think the last turbo coupe was in 88

The 91s were the 1st year to have the 200 - 210 horse 5.0 HOs. 91 - 93 had the 5.0 HO, 94 & 95 droped the 5.0 and went with the 4.6 SOHC. 96 and 97's got revised intakes and are the quicker of the 4.6s. The bigger and older 86 - 88 t-birds, you could get a 5.0 (not the HO - 165 horses???), or the 2.3 pinto engine with a turbo charger.

So,, find out for sure what you're up against. You should be able to take the regular V6 or the non HO V8 (stay clear of the 91 up V8s).

It's just a regular V-8, 1989, not a high output. Plus, he doesn't know how to drive it, he loves to lay down those one wheeled peel outs LOL. It's also an auto. I sincerely hope I win, because we've been talking about our race for about 4 years now.

My daily driver is a 1991 Lincoln LSC Special Edition with the 5.0 HO motor with 225 HP stock. I've only had the car for a couple of weeks and already had two camaro's race me. One was around an 84 z28 auto and I walked all over him and the other one was a TBI 305 RS auto and I walked on him too..I was pretty suprised that the car pulled the way it did. Once those gears get going the 5.0 pulls pretty hard even in the 4000lb lincoln.

Just race the cars and tell us what happened. The LSC has the Mustang 5.0 HO motor. The Thunderbird 5.0 LX had the "regular" 5.0 that came in a Cougars, Town Cars, Station wagons, etc. No E7 heads, no cam, cast pistons.
