Risk of tranny falling off mounts?
Risk of tranny falling off mounts?
I heard that if you street race your stock thirdgen firebird/camaro, that you should get better transmission mounts, because the stock mounts are weak and can break after quick starts from a stand still. any truth to this? im worried.

Nope, not unless you've got some serious miles and you drive the car for crappy weather. The tranny mount will hold up and when it does go you'll notice the shifter will shake. I still have a stock mount and I haven't had to replace it yet. I did replace my motor mounts during the engine swap and I plan on replacing the tranny mount when I do the cam swap (install higher stall converter as well).

ok, so i have a 3.1L MPFI V6.
If im going to tune-up my car, and add a K&N Filter, free flowing muffler, mandrel cat-back exhaust, modify the airbox etc - i should get better mounts?

The tranny mount in my camaro broke at around 140,000. When it goes, it makes a huge bump underneath everytime you get down on it hard.I replaced mine with another stock one. The car now has 178,000 on it. Really looking forward to a rebuild.

Nope, stock ones will be just fine. Mine broke right after i got the car (118K) and we replaced it in like 5 minutes. Haven't had a problem since, and not that i'm downing your car but even the sorry excuse for a V8 LO3 has a lot more torque than a V6. The previous owner supposedly stoplight raced it many times a night every weekend, which i find rather funny... I'll bet she didn't win too much, i know i hardly even bother
I'll admit, that *clunk* from a hard launch was pretty scary, but i drove with it broken for 2-3 weeks just fine, it only moves around when you really stomp on it. I knew a guy who hada beat up old berlinetta and it was broke for the whole time he owned it and the car still drove fine.

Money can buy a fast car, you're proof of that. Oh yeah, and I like how you've been trying to sell your car since early summer, lol What? You don't like your car or did your parents say they'll buy you a new one?

I broke 2 tranny mounts in the space of about 3 months with my 2.8L. Then I found out about the Energy Suspension mounts, and didn't have any problems since.
So, Unity, maybe order an ES mount (you only need one) and keep it until you break the current one.
Oh, and I'm assuming you have an automatic... I hear that the mounts in the manuals are much better, but more expensive.

Alex, I don't believe they are the same... and besides.. the 'mystery' manual ones cost 150$ and can only be gotten from GM... we've been over this on the V6 board many a time...
As for V6's being weak and not able to break mounts... I busted mine, tore it clean in half, so eat me...
Unity, there is no risk of it 'falling' off... the mount just breaks and causes the trans to fall onto the crossmember (I think thats how it works), every time after that when you accelerate, the torque of the engine will pop the tranny up and then drop it back down causing a sickening "thump... thump thump" type noise... I drove on my broken mount for 2 months before I got my ES one, and now I'm doing great...
If you do order the ES one, have patience with it, and leave yourself plenty of daylight and beer... some people have had problems with the crossmember hole not being big enough (drill it out) and bolts breaking (I know people running on 2 of the 4 bolts... I myself am running on 3...)(just drill and retap..) Also, when your friend that is a 'mechanic' tells you that he's 'done this before' and that you don't have to support the tranny... DON'T, FOR THE LOVE OF G O D, LISTEN TO HIM! If I didn't support mine the little bit that I did, we probably would have broken all the bolts and ripped the tranny right off the car... (use a jack and a semi-large piece of wood on the pan to support/jack it up a little)... Other wise it's pretty much an unbolt/bolt up type job...
I hope that helped you a little...
oh, and unless it breaks, don't replace it...

Let me point out something: He lives in NV. It is said that the best old cars come from the west coast because of the weather! This is why most of you guys broke your mounts, NOT because of a power issue. Torque from a 4 banger could brake a tranny mount if the mount has been subjected to aweful weather like winter salt and the such.
Let me through out another idea about GM mounts. My local mechanic John Larue has a 70 Yenko Nova sporting 900+hp and runs 9's on 10" slicks, he is using stock GM motor mounts. Let's just say he's been racing at e-town for a LONG time now and I do believe he knows what he's doing. It is true that his car doesn't see bad weather and THAT is why mounts fail. Just like swaybar end links, control arm bushings, etc.
