My 2.8 will have a rebuild transmission with converter and shiftkit... the works... by the time the kids gets his license... after that we're going to race... He's got an 89 Tacoma with a 3 litre V6, his is a manual...

He think's it'll come down to how well he can drive... I think it'll come down to how bad I wanna beat him...

Any suggestions? Or am I going to have to wait for my headers and KNN intake to be bolted on before I yank his pants down...

get every mod you can before you race him cuz as it stands, i think he has you. a 5 speed, if he can drive it, will walk all over you. do you get any wheel spin at all? if you really want to beat him, i have seen performance cams for your v6 in jegs. good luck, and be prepared for the v6 insults that are sure to follow.

V6 insults are always fun...

And no, I don't get any wheelspin... My broken front struts and new rear shocks keep me planted pretty well...

I've still got 4 months... I'll mod my a$$ off until we race and I'll post results...

You can take him. He's a new driver who probably can't shift too well, plus a 2WD pickup is hard to launch if you're in a hurry

I've had my RS for almost 4 years, and have raced enough cars that were SUPPOSED to be faster than me that I can tell you from experience that with a good launch, you can beat more things than you think

Im with JasonE. Learn how to get a good launch and he'll have to play catch up. Its just like at the track...if you get a good 60' time, expect a good e.t. Play around with preloading the trans a little bit instead of just punching it. Getting the rpm's up a little bit on launch will help make up for your V6's lack of low end grunt. Also, the faster you go the more areodymanic drag will come into effect. You definetly have the advantage on him there. SO after your good launch he will have a harder time making up ground. I still dont know who would win for sure, but I'll give you my support.

Amen, Jason E. If every car that SHOULD beat me did, I wouldn't have a good record. I'm really going to burn some tires in the cutlass though. That's the bad part. I'm used to throwing the ltd off the line with just minor sqeaks on first and second gear. The cutlass MAY have 3.73s. Or not. I don't know what the original engine was.
Anyway, strange about your 2.8 not burning much tires. I knew a guy with an 89 camaro 2.8 that could perform major burnouts. All the mods I know about- his weird sounding dual exhaust. So what does that make- 150 hp? He would start off burning one of his 15s and as he let off, he would fly off burning both. Alot of smoke. Not the best burnout I've seen, but very impressive. A different rear and he could really have a fast car. I think it was just slightly faster than my ltd, so that puts it at 8.5-9.0 seconds to 60, probably high 16s quarter mile. I don't know, I'm not much of a drag strip person. Good traction with my 3.08s though, with alot of effort, I can leave a 6-8 foot light strip. Oh well. That doesn't bother me. What kind of rear does an 85 and an 89 v6 camaro have anyway?
