88 TBI 305 automatic vs. 84 305 H.O. standard. Whats gonna happen ?

Transmission: auto
88 TBI 305 automatic vs. 84 305 H.O. standard. Whats gonna happen ?

A kid at my highschool drives a 84 with the 305 H.O. engine and wants to race my 88 TBI 305. His car is standard, mine is automatic. His car is all stock and mine is too except I had the muffler removed from the exhaust system. He is running 3.73 gears and I'm running 2.73. I don't know what the numbers are to compare but can anybody tell me what to expect? Neither of us has experience with drag racing. Do I stand a chance or should I save myself the embaressment?

save yourself the embassarsment. his 3.73 gears and 5 speed give him a huge advantage, if he knows how to drive...

your dead. Depending on the state of disrepair you cars are in of course. he's rated at 20 hp more to begin with, which i believe is underrated on the HOs and he's got a 5 speed AND 3.73's. Unless his car runs like crap and he can't drive, you are toast.

You're dead meat unless this kid really can't drive. Those 84' z28's with the 5 speeds were actually pretty quick cars for their time..Since they came stock with 3.73 gears as an option.

well lets put it this way, my buddy had a 305 ho (just spun the bearing so he's putting in a 350) the only mods he had was no ac and an open y pipe. he ran a 14.5. I was the second fastest at school out of an Iroc,and a 91 z. I know, I know, the iroc and z should have been faster, but they weren't.

Maybe if you race past 100 mph you could win, since his gears would kill him at that rpm, but I see that being the only way.

Even if he can't shift that well hes going to win..unless he stalls it on take off.. LoL I remember my first burnout with a stick I stalled it. I'm slowly learning how to shift I've gotten my mothers car to chirp going into 2nd, I just can't seem to get my fathers truck to chirp in 2nd
