A kid at my school owns a newer (I think '00) Honda Accord 2-door. He was talking the other day about how he has to remove his cat back exhaust because it was not emissions legal. He got pulled over originally for the illegal headlights and taillights. The funny thing is that with his full exhaust he is worried about another kids TRD Toyota TRUCK. I don't undrestand why someone would spend tons of cash on a car which is still slow, and to top it off the parts are illegal.

 

What could be illegal about the exhaust? Too loud?

 

How could a cat back be illegal? Other than noise like the last guy said, i mean, it has no effect on emissions at all!

I'm just repeating what I heard from the kid. Beleive me when I say that it is NOT too loud. I can't hear it over my Flows, and were talking about my car with 4 cats. The worst part is that mommy and daddy bought him the car, and the parts are all presents from reletives. How sad is that?

Yeah in Illinois its that way. I had cop pull me over for loud exhaust and i told him it was just a flowmaster. He said anything thats not factory is illegal.

LMAO! I agree on the sending the tree huggers to afghanistan...you won't really get in trouble around here for having a loud exhaust except for in a few places. The laws really are contradictary around here. If a vehicle has over 50k miles on it, we can pass it for state inspection without it having catalytic converters, yet that same car faces up to a $5,000 fine for having removed the cats if caught by state police. My girlfriend has a 5.0 with o/r h pipe and 2 chamber flows with a pretty big cam and she got pulled over oneday for her exhaust being too loud, but she played the "dumb girl" game with him and got out of it.

Woah woah... any deviation from factory?? Are you serious?? But, couldn't you just tell them "hey, my factory exhaust fell apart, and i needed a replacement. The factory OE stuff is too expensive, and this replacement even has a CARB number on it"? That's so ridiculous that they would do that!! The other day I got pulled over by a cop just because he wanted to comment on my car. And my car is as loud as they come. And the only ticket I got was for not having my seatbelt on.

This is where I have to applaud California. They may be strict with emissions, but at least they're willing to work with the aftermarket to try to make everyone reasonably happy.

As for the states that require only stock parts, what do you do when your car is 15 years old or so and you have no choice but to go aftermarket?

He was either trying to intimidate you or didn't know jack. If ANY deviation was illegal, it would be illegal for muffeler shops to install anything but factory replacement. I'm not buying it.

Yeah i had a hard time believing it to until he wrote me a warning for it. I was pi$$ed. All i have is headders and a catback its not loud at all.

 

it's illegal all right...I've read the laws about exhaust in IL. Anything increasing the level of noise on an exhaust is illegal among other things.

 

What are the locals afraid of in IL...scare a few cows? Wake up a bird in a tree in the middle of a field . That's like telling a tree to be quiet when it lands in the middle of a forest and nobody is around to hear it.
It's funny because I don't think NJ has that law. I believe there is a noise violation but it has to exceed a certain dB level before they can give you a ticket. I see a lot of guys getting pulled over for having the stereo's too high.

You guys should all move up to Michigan. My friend and I were pulled over once while driving with straight headers, the only ticket we got was for speeding (50 in a 40 zone).

 

LMAO @ Jon! Hehe, in IN we don't want to keep the farmers up past 6 pm, they need to get up and harvest the corn bright and early! Or you get the people that wake up at the crack-o-noon, we wouldn't want to be disturbed now would we?

yes there might be a law about but first of all i have had my flowmaster catback system in place for almost 2 yrs and never have had any problems. any cop that pulls you over for it basically just wants to check you out and he is using that as a reason to pull you over. besides even if he wrote you a ticket, you have several arguments when you go to court. for example headers, edelbrock make 50 state legel they make you exhaust louder. I dont like that cops around here either and dont let cops intiminate you..
