Racing a Rustang tonight!

Hey everyone! I'm a junior in high school, my first car's a Camaro, how nice. Well, I was walking out of school on friday and this kid in my class has this mustang. He asked me if I wanted my *** kicked by an actual muscle car, and obviously I accepted. So we went out and I popped my hood. I only have a 305 and it's kinda dirty. He asked what it was and i told him a 5 litre and he said "Yeah, I have one of those too". So we go over and pop his hood, and I look inside and he only has a 6 cylinder! So he's standing next to me gloating about his chromed out V-6, and I tell him he's missing two cylinders. So obviously he gets all offended and wimps out tellin me we'll race, but his transy is slippin. So we go to a light and I decide to smoke the tires a little to intimidate, and he pulls up and when the light turns he doesnt do anything. After we pull over, he tells me that he couldnt race because his car was acting up and he will on monday. Typical 'stang owner wimping out again! You guys think I could get my *** kicked by his car tomorrow? I have the 305 with headers and 3-inch exhaust K&N and a chip. THanks!

If it's a V6 don't waste your gas. He won't come close to you. Please don't judge us all by our worst examples...a lot of us appreciate cool cars no matter what name plate is on them.

What kind of times would you guys expect from a 305? Would a 99+ V6 come close?

I say you got him pretty good. Unless it's a 99+ Gt and John Force is behind the wheel I say you've got him.

Even if it's a 99+ V6 they have to practically be driven professionally to get any decent numbers out of them.

Making some assumptions here...Is your Camaro a 1983 with LG4? (I'm assuming this based on the fact that you didn't say you had a Z28, with the slightly higher performance LU5 or L69). And the other guy has a 99+ V6 Mustang, right? If so, this race comes down to driver skill. If you've got an 83 LG4, with exhaust and chip, I'm guessing you're putting about 140 hp to the rear wheels, maybe a little more, maybe a little less. The 99+ Mustang V6's are rated at 190 hp, with translates to what? 160-170 at the rear wheels? On second thought, if the Mustang driver has any skills, you're toast.

By the way, my son is about to turn 16, and he recently got a 1985 LG4 Camaro, bone stock. It dynos 130 rwhp and last Friday, we took it to the track and ran 10.88 @ 64.xx in the 1/8 mile, which translates to a mid-upper 16 second 1/4. I bet the V-6 Mustangs, well driven, could hit upper 15's.

My buddies track prepped 99 V6 made a 14.93 @ 93.x mph with me driving. Only money mods were K&N, and shifter. Most stock 99+ V6s should run mid 15s.

However, I do believe the poster, and a V6 is very difficult to launch compared to most cars. There is a very thin edge between bogging and spinning. If it's a highschooler who doesn't drag race and doesn't know how to stage, launch, or shift well he's very easily running a mid 16 with the car. I still say just race and find out.

Kind of an old thread but are you sure about that, Nic? I've been at the corral a lot lately and it seems to me that most of them are much more anti-notford and specifically anti-fbody than most of us are anti-mustang and anti-notGM. The "anti-notford" stuff has surprised me the most--as if ford has done a lot for them or something. I see a lot of LS1 respect over there, but I also see a lot of f-body dislike. I think that ford loyalty is the strongest and most widespread nowadays. And by that I just mean that with more and more people loyal to no brand (why should you be?), ford has retained more loyalty than anyone else it seems. I have seen several things along the lines of "not the best motor (or whatever), but at least it's a mustang."

Most of the Mustang guys on here are cool (can't be too close-minded if you're at mustang sites and here, right). And most of the guys at the corral (yes, I have been checking out a mustang site ) have been really cool about answering my really basic questions. I'm just not so sure that most of the ford guys appreciate any nameplate. That's fine--I'll still check out the mustang site.

I agree with most of that, except I think the "I'll only buy this brand" type of thing is pretty much the same with both companies not 1 more than the other. There has even been lots of posts and things said about F**d and M*****gs here on all boards lots of times but they usually get locked instead of starting non-tech or BS, that stuff is probably OK there.

With over 24,000 registered members I'm sure there's a lot of bad apples on there and I'm sure you've gotten quite a few responses from a lot of them as that sort of topic will typically draw their attention. Those type of posts also tend to stand out. What the guys over at the corral really dislike is when someone comes over for the sole purpose of bragging about how fast their f-body is...not saying you did that at all. The majority of us appreciate any rwd performance car, but obviously, we're biased towards our cars just as you guys are biased towards your cars. That's human nature. I think ipscshooter, mustang5l5, and myself are pretty representative of the attitude of the majority of the mustang guys on the Corral.

Dont dog all mustang owners

Ive found that the older more mature mustang owners are more into helping anyone and everyone who'd like to listen to their wisdom... where as a lot of f-body drivers only like helping other f-body cars, especially at car shows when i start talking 2 an f-body owner, and when he asks what i drive i tell him a 72 chevelle and just blows me off after, as mustang owners want to look at it and see what uve got and everything and give pointers...

Btw, when is the race happening? Is it christmas eve or did it already happen?

Yea i know, but im making a generalization since we're talking about the f-body and mustang owners. It was the same even when i had my v6 firebird.

Raced Him

Hey guys, I just thought I'd give you an update on the 'Stang. I was ready to race him on Monday, and we leave the parking lot. So we're going through the Burger Kind parking lot and stop at the stop sign. He floors it, turning right onto a 4 lane road. I have to wait for a van to go by before I gun it out of the lot. After I catch up with him we slow down for the next light. I stop on the yellow and start to stage because I got the a little earlier than him, and he just flies right by me on the yellow!! I couldn't believe it, the next day in school he's telling everyone he kicked my *** when we "raced off the stop sign coming from Burger King!"!!! So obviously in his mind he figured that since I had to wait for the van, he'd call it a win and get out of getting his asz kicked. So now everyone is asking me what's wrong with my car and asking me to race because they think I'm weak LOL. So a couple days after that, I'm leaving school and I see him sitting at a light alone in the car. I quickly pull in the next lane and stage up while my friend tells him to get ready to race fair. The light changed and I pulled on him all the way to the next stop light. Needless to say, he didn't have much to say to me the next day. One win for me!

This board is awesome guys- it's great that you'll take a rookie Junior in high school under your wing and teach him the automotive ropes. I really appreciate all the feedback!
BTW- it's a 99 or 2000 V-6 'Stang.

Now you need to use his trash talking to your advantage. Start putting some money on some of the races you're offered

PS...I did not say this and assume no responsibility for what happens as a result of this.
