This happened a few months ago, but I still laugh at this. One friday afternoon I was coming home from my university and I was on route 422 between pottstown and reading in PA. I pull up to one of the lights on the stretch in the slow lane next to a black Nissian Maxima (new one). The car looked off the factory floor with a cute younger blonde girl driving it. Not thinking much of it, I thought I would casually take off from the light and smash it while in second gear around 3500rpm, so I put my auto in 2nd. We took off from the light and I notice she is putting her foot into it. In response, I did so to. At that point though the trans was still in 1st, so it shifted itself way too early, and carried on as the indecisive trans decided what to do. The result was me watching the little Nissian speed off into the distance. The one lesson I took from that was, always put the trans in 1st when at 4 lane stop lights, just incase!

In all honesty though even if I did get setup to do a "pass" at the light she still would have smoked me, I went online and saw how fast those things are, and most new cars in general. Me thinks its time to get another DD and swap out the stock 305 LB9.

I honestly don't know what I want to do with the car motor wise yet. Right now I am thinking about a small block twin turbo setup. At this point though it will be a long while before that happens, I still have 2 years of college, and hopefully land a job in my study area. Once that happens then I can start to rip into the car. Plus she is still my DD, and a very reliable one at that, over 200,000 miles, never left me stranded, so I don't want to mess with a good thing till I have another DD.

yeah my gf drives a 3.5 altima coupe, she let me run it at the track one night against my buddys LT1 Z28 (stock) should have seen his face when he looked over and saw me next to him at the finish line lol.... the VQ series of motors nissan puts out are pretty stout V6s

well. To make this clear unless your putting out some big power in your sbc you should never race when someone has the jump on you. By jump I mean she was at wide open throttle seconds before you got on the throttle. She had the edge. I few weeks ago the same thing happen to me with a 78 stock c3 vette. I won but he had the jump. I got him in the end but I should have been ahead a alot more.

You don't have to do as much as you think, not to mention it won't be detrimental to the engine in any way. The Nissan breaths better throughout the RPM band, most newer cars will, and more air can consume more fuel, no secret there. Most guys who run LB9's don't see where the engine is really lacking its' performance, and when these minor areas are addressed, the engine will pull you right past that Maxima w/no problem. I will gladly continue if you'd like, because unlike most I don't mind sharing performance tips, but if you have your heart set on swapping to a larger engine, then I will just stop myself right here...

The throttle body should be the only bottle neck before the intake valve, and the air charge needs to be as fast and smooth as possible (non-turbulent w/increased velocity). The cylinder heads need to compliment the camshaft you choose, and I am not referring to anything too aggressive and costly, as I only use stock parts with essentially mild cam. You need to understand where your power begins, and where it peaks in the RPM band, and keep the engine in that area. If power begins at 2500-RPM, you need to either dump the clutch, or get a stall speed converter that flashes, in that area. If power peaks at 6000-RPM, you need to keep the engine in that area at wide open throttle and either not exceed it, or make sure you at least reach it, and this is also accomplished through gearing and tire size selection. The duty cycle of the injectors should be nowhere near static throughout, so select your injectors based on your horsepower goals, and understand how tuning the prom really works. Spark Advance and Acceleration Enrichment need to be on the money, as does your target air/fuel ratio at part and wide open throttle. Your stock Tuned Port Injection setup has the potential to flow just as good, and even better than most aftermarket units, you just need to understand where to open it up. The same goes for the stock heads...

They came out pretty good for stockers. The valve guides were also taken down, and believe it or not these are only 1.84" valves but flow incredibly for the 305...

It takes x amount of air and fuel to make x amount of horsepower, that never changes, the more air you can cram into the cylinders, the more fuel you can burn, and more fuel means more potential horsepower. I use the word potential because the volume of that air source will dictate whether your building for torque, or for horsepower, as this is where your RPM range falls into play...

street lethal i'm building my l03 with vortec heads , aluminum 4 barrel intake {1500-6500 rpm } walboro 255 fuel pump , 454 throttle body made for a blow thru setup . lt4 cam an shortie headers with full 3" catback exhaust .an tuning with the ebl flash . i'm guessing 300-375 fwhp . what do you think ? then i'm adding the t70 turbo with a/r of .84 for 8-10 lbs of boost .
