I am not surprised at all at the outcome at those speeds.

Re: 88 formula 350 vs 03-06 g35 coupe

I beat a g35x once with a bolt on l98, but i believe those cars are heavier than coupes. 350z and g35's seem to run pretty close to L98 trap speeds at track. Maybe a tad higher. Down low the tpi has more power under curve and better gearing with 700r4 deep first.

my win came from pure driving error. he didnt miss a shift, but he did shift like my mother in an old s10, he pulled but very fast and when he caught me we both let off.

Are you talking to me? This L98 engine has been the strongest, most reliable car I have ever owned. It pulls harder than the day I bought it! Purrs like a kitten. The 350z's just have more hp and weigh less.

Check your header gaskets. Does the ticking increase with rpm?

03-06 cars are DOGS in stock form, the only 350z or G35 that makes any power are the 07-08s that had the dual throttle body intake manifolds and VVEL system on the exhaust cams.

I raced TWO different cars with two different drivers from a 70 mph highway roll in a truck that ran 14.20 @ 96 mph. At 120 mph the Hemi Ram was still out in front. At 130 he was at my back bumper and had to shift. My 3.55 geared Ram was still at 5,700 rpm in 3rd on its way to 6,500 rpm.

Are you saying a Dodge truck can beat an Lt1? Cause a 350z from those years and an Lt1 are about even.

G35 weighs more than a formula. It weighs more than my stock iroc. Formula weighs less and has more torque. Easy win off the line.

Never said my Ram was stock, but it would kill the average 350Z everywhere. I pulled a 12.5 second LS1 car past the 1/8 mile mark in it between my .2 tenths better RT and 1/8 mile of 8.50s @ 80 mph.

LT1 will EASILY dog a 350Z from those years a TPI car is a better run.

Re: 88 formula 350 vs 03-06 g35 coupe

thats pretty typical of Lt1 vs G35. Now a TPI would pull first from a stop but would get quickly overtaken by the G,cause TPI only makes good power down low in the rpm range.

THere's no way a stock TPI 350 would keep up with the Lt1 like that.

Still, you take 2 cars that weigh about the same, the one car has more torque and less hp, the other more hp and less torque across the range. The one with more hp will win. TPI makes great torque, but runs out of breath well before most cars even hit their peak power. When I had my 350 tpi car, I had probably 100 ft/lbs more torque than any car i raced, but most cars with more hp always beat me.

Keep dreaming!!! Having had two different cams in the same engine, same vehicle, same setup, I can tell you that TQ over a broad engine rpm wins races, not peak HP.

My Hemi Ram picked up nearly 3 full tenths in the 1/8 mile alone switching backfrom a 272 duration Crower ground Super Spartan to a 265 duratio Comp ground Sidewinder cam. I gained nearly 40 ft/lbs to the tires at 3,000 rpm for the tradeoff of 12 hp @ 6,500 rpm.

Truck ran good for no more than I had done to it. However mod for mod my Titan that had less RWHP but more torque is proving to be quicker than the Ram for the same mods.

Re: 88 formula 350 vs 03-06 g35 coupe

Don't you understand that a heavy vehicle like a truck needs low end torque. Your comparing apples to oranges here. I have never beaten a vehicle that had more hp than me and my TPI L98 Firebird had approx. 350-360 ft/lbs of torque. Hp was probably about 250-260 at the crank. Bolt on car. TPI was designed to make low end torque, its rev limit is about 4500 rpm, thats like a truck, but most newer vehicles have a rev limit much higher than a TPI car. This guy's 88' Formula 350 is no exception. A G35 and an LT1 car both have a higher rev limit than a TPI car. THey make more hp and torque and carry it farther along in the rpm's.

torque gets u going, hp keeps you there. A wider rpm/powerband helps too. I remember racing a 700 ft/lb of torque Ford turbo diesel truck. He kept up with me for first gear and that was it.LOL

You raced a Ford turbo Diesel truck and essentially use that as your example? Let me explain something for you guys, and I am speaking from a SBC/BBC perspective, 5250-RPM is what we refer to as the "crossing line" between the torque band and the horsepower band, and any engine that does not rev past 5250-RPM, meaning the cam, the fuel, and air intake consumption does not allow it to breath past 5250-RPM is what we consider "torque" motors. Engines that are capable of breathing well beyond 5250-RPM are peak horsepower engines. Both are geared according to their RPM, and both focus on their rate of acceleration when being tuned. More cubic inches automatically equals more torque, thus having no reason to rev the snot out of it. A hindered 305/350 that is capped by TPI and cannot rev past 4000-RPM will not do as good as their big block bretheren, they need to rev past 5250 to make up for their torque loss. Try racing a well tuned Super Duty 455 Trans Am that can hook, that puts out gobs of torque, and not so much horsepower, instead of that Ford turbo Diesel truck, and I can assure you he will be ahead of you come third gear...

Here we go again, .... the G35 COUPE weighs maybe 10 F'N lbs more than an 88 Formula +/- for drivetrain 40-50 lbs... Seriously?

I was going off wiki

3,373 lb (1,530 kg) (coupe 6MT) [6]

3,395 lb (1,540 kg) (coupe 5AT) [6] 3,395 lb (1,540 kg) (sedan 6MT) 3,351 lb (1,520 kg) (sedan 5AT) [7]

3,483 lb (1,580 kg) (sedan CVT-8) [7][7

My iroc weighs 3280 with no reduction at all. 100 pounds is a lot when racing.

I was going off wiki

3,373 lb (1,530 kg) (coupe 6MT) [6]

3,395 lb (1,540 kg) (coupe 5AT) [6] 3,395 lb (1,540 kg) (sedan 6MT) 3,351 lb (1,520 kg) (sedan 5AT) [7]

3,483 lb (1,580 kg) (sedan CVT-8) [7][7

My iroc weighs 3280 with no reduction at all. 100 pounds is a lot when racing.
Especially when the Z or G car does not even make 250 RWTQ.
