Spanked a TC Cobalt SS

I have yet to run anyone in my TA with my new vortec heads, usually I don't don't run many people but this guy was riding my butt for a while and it was obvious what he was gonna do so I thought why not lets see how my old 84 does,

We were single lane and he was about 4 inches away from my bumper. I was driving normal, he was riding my butt. I took off normally and slowly brought it to 40mph as I would any day. When the lane split into two he took off to pass me just as expected.

I am fairly sure he was in second and so I dropped it into 3rd going 40mph and very quickly put a couple lengths on him. I shifted early into 4th at about 75 and put one more on him before I shut down and he did the fly by.

Those turbo Cobalts are quick 260-280HP I was surprised how well he did. That turbo was really loud I could hear him the entire time. I don't know all his mods I noticed some appearance mods and he had some kind of exhaust system.

It was a good day for the old 84 TA

No vids yet but here is a pic. Not the most recent but little has changed with appearance.

Just gave her new headers, Y pipe, Clutch and transmission this last winter.

They are decent, only 205 hp vs the 260-280 of the turbo

good thing he missed a shift, what did he run?

he did it 2x in a row. after I beat him once I gave him another chance and then he missed his 1-2 again repeatedly and it wasn't so close.

That is probably about right because I can take the SC cobalts in my Toyota Solara V6 5speed.

Re: Spanked a TC Cobalt SS

SS/SC Cobalt should mid to low 14s around 95-100mph with a average driver. The turbo should be significantly quicker trapping 103-105mph.

I've seen them go mid 13s bone stock.

this guy had a handful of 14.9-15.0 slips which is why I ran him. if I thought it was a 13sec car my brother would have raced him.
I also thought my fbomb was a lil quicker then 15.4

when my brother first got his car he ran a 14.0@97 it was late in autumn and cool day

the only time I ran my car was a 90* + july day, my brother ran a 14.4 and I ran 15.4 so is it safe to assume I could take a 1/2 sec off my time on a cooler day.

Re: Spanked a TC Cobalt SS

ET means nothing to temp. Too many variables.

trap speeds are what you want to compare.

People are revving the **** out of them up to 7000rpm. WAY out of the engines powerband. The power band is actually from 3000-5000rpm when the Overboost feature is kicking in provide an under-rated 270lb/ft from 2500-4500rpm. Cars weigh about 3250lbs for the heaviest model and are putting down about 230whp stock. Tunes bring them to the 250whp range with over 330lb/ft at the WHEELS.

Personally I have never seen a stock one run better than 14.0 at the track.

Either way I was happy to walk him. I was glad we went from a roll I am not a fan of launching the car hard.

Midias. Good kill. And great looking bird. A set of black crosslaces would really make youre car look aggressive!

Thanks a lot, the bird needs some work but it is a fun project. Every year I do some new stuff. I think I finally got the mechanical stuff done just need to work on the rest now.

I need to do something about the rims they are beat. I am thinking about stripping them, polishing the aluminum then masking the front and painting the insides black.
