Hi, I'm new to this forum. I have a 91' camaro rs, I built a 327 (.30 over) for it about 4 years ago. The car is not done yet, i need to repaint, do the suspension, rebuild the tranny, etc. I have ran the car with the motor in it and it is a screamer!! So where am I going with this post? So when I built the motor I was young and it was my first motor I had built, id done some research on the internet and was working with a local machine shop. I had the whole bottom end done by the machine shop and I did the rest of the motor. It has wisco forged dome pistons, trick flows sbc 500 hp top end kit, victor jr. High rise intake, Holley street avenger 770 cfm carb. It has 72 cc combustion chambers which are big for a 327 in my opinion. But still has 11.5:1 compression. Even though it doesn't have 64 cc combustion chambers and still has 11.5 compression wouldn't it still put out the same power?? Please help. I'd like someone's advise that's expirenced in this area. Please ask any questions. I'll answer the best I can. Sorry if I sound like a amateur! Lol. I kinda of am. P.s. I've also got a 7.5 rearend with eatin posi with 3.90 gears fwi.

 

I am sure that you received guidance from either the machine shop or someone with experience at the time you bought the heads.
You had to run a large chambered head to lower the compression to a streetable level ( I.e. so it'll run on pump gas.
So, yes. . . It'll make the same or better power than a flat top piston w/64cc heads.

 

It really depends on the heads.Some heads such Iron Eagle & I think SHP use the same casting.IDK if the Trick Flows do or not.They just machine the valve job differently to get the added cc's, which can hurt flow.IMO,i'd rather have the smaller chamber & flat top vs a dome.The dome pistons can interfere with the burn.

 

Okay, the Trick flow heads are a canted valve ( they have a different position than standard sbc heads) .
There of course will always be NAY SAYERS, to any change, but I have seen some engines with TFS heads make really good power. .. I. Say, put it on a dyno, get a good tune & see what ya got.

Thanks for the input! Unfortunately I'm at least 6 months away from being able to dyno the motor. I'm actually trying to sell my house and needing to buy another, so the car is on the back burner till then. I did find that the test motor for the top end kit was a 383 with 10.5:1 I know the 383 obviously has more c.i. But it does have less compression, what would you guys think about that? Those dyno numbers were with the 383, how do you think they would be with a 327 .30 over (331)? Thanks!

 

Completely different engine combination, what rpm did the 383 make power too?
Remember your 331is 52 cubes smaller, so say the 383 made power too 6500, your 331 could make power too 7500 or more! The 383, is a torque monster, where as the 331 gives up bottom end torque for top end power. What are you putting the 331 in?

 

Sorry, been on a few topics and lost Trac, 91 rs. ... has it been gutted? Any of the suspension upgraded ( like, subframe connectors) ? It will run and you should not have a ton a traction issues with the 331, check out my-92-rs, he's an old friend of mine & he is on this site

There is the link for the dyno results trick flow has for this top end kit. My car is not gutted as I'm keeping it a street car with occasional time on the track, maybe 2-3 times a year. I still have to add subframe connectors to the car as well. Thinking about weld on ones. I will then replace lower control arms with after market ones and put better shocks and springs in. I'm thinking I'm might have to change my gears from 3.90 to 4.11 or 4.56 according to other forums being the 331s have little bottom end. But I guess that's another thread. I know I could ask questions all day if my motor will be in the 500 hp range but won't really know till I dyno it. But there's gotta be other people on here who's built a 327 to the nuts. Thanks!

Yes I will defiantly post dyno results once I do it. I just wish I could dyno it now!! Lol but in the meantime I'd love hear of any thoughts or expirences realating to this!

 

The last time I built a 327 was 20years ago, lol I was told a long time ago , there's NO replacement for DISPLACEMENT! So I started building 377's & 400+cube. Sbc's
If you have the build info on your engine (ie spec.s like, cam duration@ .050, lift, rods & pistons, head cc (combustion chamber & runner sizes) etc. ..
Even with all the information, it'll just be an educated guess. If you have a home Computer and can get a copy of desktop dyno, put in all the specs. ... it'll give you a ballpark

 

Yes I've heard that saying as well, a lot haha. Someone's gotta keep the small sbc going lol. I do have all the engine specs recorded in a binder I can dig out but unfortunately my computer crashed awhile back so it may be a winter project to get desk top dyno, unless someone would be willing or interested in doing it for me.

 

I would, but I don't even own a computer LOL. All I have is this touch screen phone from wal-mart haha.
