85 IROC vs Trailblazer SS

So it was a good day here in Lansing Michigan today, the rain finally quick just in time for the Tuesaday Classic Car Meet at a local burger joint. After a great afternoon of checking out everyone's winter project it was time to cruise the strip from one end of town to the other and "stretch" my girls legs from light to light
I noticed a set of headlights keeping pace with me from the Southside into downtown (enter the Arctic white Trailblazer SS) so we play cat-n-mouse trying to get ahead of traffic so we can both take a lane at the next light. We finally work our way to the front and there we stand, primed, ready to go, I look over and give him "The look" then slide my shifter into first gear, as he looks down upon me.
Left foot on brake....
Right foot raising RPM slightly......
Bounce the front end up to the thick white line......
I watch the illumination of the adjacent traffic light, green to yellow.....
Our light turns Green, left foot drops off edge of brake pedal and right foot slams to the floor...Go..Go.Go........
My *** end kicks sideways and I counterstear to prevent lane crossing or curb slapping!!!!
I had to back off, and by this time that Trialblazer was well over one car length ahead of me!!! Sure felt good just to "exercise" a little bit, and play around. I have always loved those Trialblazer SS, and I finally got to play against one. Unfortunately he had to turn at the next light, I really wanted to do a rolling takeoff just to see what would happen. The last time I looked those SS's run about 13.xx Sec 1/4 mile bone stock, significaly quicker than my bone stock 85 TPI 5.0L.
And so the summer fun begins!!!!

You mean the summer fun of getting beat by almost any modern car that's running 4, 6 or 8 cyl's?

Don't try to outrun any modern truck or passenger cars and then you can feel good out burning rubber in your Iroc and nobody else can talk about you getting outrun by someones family suv. I just enjoy mine and refuse to race anyone in it at all. UNTIL I get my 350 built and in there.

Good point dmccain, if I don't race I can't loose...I can still appreciate the fact that she is a clean classic car!!!

Hey, don't feel bad. My bone stock 305 TPI 1985 IROC was whooped by a Sprint turbo one night.

Re: 85 IROC vs Trailblazer SS

Last fall I raced a 2013 or 14 RS 6 cyl Camaro with my 91 Z28. He followed me down the road, past the strip malls and up to the light at the bottom of the on-ramp. Unfortunately I was behind another car so it wasn't game-on until we got to the top of the ramp and could go around but I was ready. I wound out 2nd as we merged into traffic and banged 3rd as I went past. He was hot on my tail and pulled out to pass me in the right lane but couldn't find the speed as I powershifted through 4th and into 5th. I backed off and he seemed to think it was a victory keeping up with me when he had 100 more horses, but that's life I guess.

Not the fastest cars out there but still a great bang for the buck!

Now, if I had my 2014 Tundra - he never would have seen my doors!

You also had a tremendous weight advantage. Truth be told, the 3rd Gen is a wicked platform. For what these cars cost, you obtain a fantastic handling car and for a few grand into you can have a 12 second car.

Re: 85 IROC vs Trailblazer SS

I don't want to build a really fast car I just want to build my next engine strong enough to keep these pesky kids with their pickup trucks w/glasspacks at bay. But hell I see them running low 14s at the strip every time I go over there. Just for kicks a couple years ago I tried my wifes Altima at the track and it turned a 14.3 if I remember correctly. Im aiming to get my car in the mid 13s and still have A/C and reliability. And as soon as I get body work and paint done I will tackle that.
