2.8 vs 3.1 (non-thirdgen)
Two of my friends are going to race each other and i'm wondering who will win. One of thems got an
'89 4 door Lumina with a 3.1, and the other has an
'88 4 door Cutlass Ciera with a 2.8. (gonna be a slow race) Anyways, The Olds is in better shape, (only 25 000 kms!) and the guy in the Lumina is pretty fat. I think its too close too call?
What do you think guys?
Thanks

Me and my friend had almost the same exact two cars.
before I had my Firebird I had a 89 olds cutlass and my friend had a 90 or 91 Lumina (luminator) . Mine was the 2.8 and he had the 3.1 , he would win every time no matter what, as they were both autos and traction was not a problem in either car.
Usually off the line we would be equal for a while, and then he would steadily pull away from me. Just more power.
On ours if you opened up the hods everything was exactly the same execpt his said 3.1 and mine was 2.8.
My stereo was better tho

The Lumina is probably a little faster. It's an uneven race. If it was same year Corsica vs Ciera, both 2.8s, Chevy vs Olds, the Olds would win. It has to be understood that Oldsmobile's problem thru the years has been the fact that it is a Luxury and Muscle Car company. They pay no attention to weight and aerodynamics, thus their engines get the blame when it should rest on the fact that they usually outweigh the competition. Also true of Cadillac and Lincoln.
