I dunno man... I think he might come out on top. I'll bet you'd take him with deeper rear end gears and/or some headers though.

He is running a V6... but it's a 2001 soooo I'd get headers and an open element before I put my money where my mouth is. My friend stuck a buick v6 rated at 160hp stock (THAT'S ONLY 10 LESS THAN THE 305 LO3!!!) in his Triumph TR7 and, when it's running, I have no doubt that he could smoke me.

I've beaten a couple of 4th gen. f-bodies in my 89' 305 tbi.

3.8L V6 fbodies are rated at 200 hp and can run mid 15s in the quarter. The 305 TBI had 170 hp and typically ran 16 flat. You'll need some mods t beat him.

with heads and gears youd take him easily...the 2.73 rear is holding me back bad i know i would get a much better launch with a 3.42 or higher...ive beaten a 96 auto firebird before and ive never lost to a car that was rated to have as much HP as me...like a raced a 2001 v6 cougar...came to find out it has like 170hp but only like 135 lbs torque....id say find a rear end from a 4th gen or 3rd gen and go from there....oh yeah and nos may help alittle

with equal hook both cars will run side by side out of the hole. the LO3 makes more torque at a lower rpm, so really it may get a little step out of the hole. once you get out of first gear it is a different story though. the 3.8 spins up better than the stock LO3.
i wouls say to go get a posi and some 3.73's and a higher stall speed torque convertor(something in hte 2600-2800 range will work perfectly) then you should be able to take him on. also go tot he tech articles and do the ultimate tbi mods(parts 1&2) and the ALDL copnvertor lock up switch. also put ht ecar on s sensible diet(clean it out, ditch the jack and spare, and tell your friends to watch not ride)
the race is gonna be all about whatever jump you can get on him out of the hole. with out doing a good header/y-pipe set up, an intake, and a custom chip, you won't over power him.
the key to any drag race is who is quicker, not who is faster. work on the quicker parts with things like gears and free mods and faster will take care of itself.
