Friends T/A is going down

Friend has an 81 T/A with a 4.9 V8, 3 speed Auto, Borla exhaust, and a real mild cam. I have a 91 RS with a 5.0L TBI, Auto, cat removed, flowmaster exhaust, and a 14x3 K&N air filter. by the way, he doesn't have posi, neither do i, and remember his trans am weighs about 600-700 more pounds. Who would win?

301=Worst motor ever. I'd rather drive a V6.

these 2 above are obviously rookies is that borla a full dual system? also even a mild cam is a HUGE gain on a 301, he most likely has a 2.41 and you probley 2.73 i think it will be a hella race but i think you will probley edge him out due to the fact of the gears, the 2.41 is a nightmare of a gear.

Those TA's were low 17 second cars, at best. I'm not sure if a mild cam and exhaust can knock off about 1 second+ in the 1/4. Maybe?

TempesT68 would know...
He changed the cam in his old 301 and added exhaust and 3.08 gears. I rode in the car before and I would say the performance gain was more than a full second off 1/4 mile. We lined up at a stoplight after he had done the mods once...I won, but I think he would give a L03/auto a good race. Then again, if it didnt have any mods I'd say the L03 would probably win. The 301 was by no means a performance engine...but just about anything can be made fast. Its just too easy to toss in some Chevy power and haul @ss! right TempesT?

ditto TPI the rookies that just say "they suck thats that" obviously have never worked with one, dont forget the exhaust of those late 70's birds were the worst in history, 2" NON manderal bent y-pipe system, huge VERY resctive cat and horrible stock muffler, and the cam was a 176/182 .350/.360 lift cam TINY, i stepped to duel exhaust with no cats and a comp 204/214 .420/.442 cam and the power gain was unreal, EASY full second gain, yes stock STOCK they will mid/low 17 second cars but just minor bolt ons and they will fly, agian not a full out race engine, but power can be had there, just becuase they sucked it stock form, doesnt mean they cant make power with a few minor bolt ons agian givin that horrible 2.41 rear he has you will probley just edge him out, but he should have a posi axle, the T/a's from 77-81 all had factory posi's unless its blown or someone swapped the axles/

hey, I'm no rookie. The 305 has a flowmaster, no cat, a better gear and a k&n. The trans am has basically the same mods with a crappy gear and a cam that is "mild." How you determine what mild means is up to you. To me, it means, a little better than stock.

The car is also stated to weigh 600-700 lbs more than his f-bod. that alone is worth about .6-.7 seconds.

I think you need to step out from behind your pontiac sunglasses and see the light.

i didnt say the 81 would win,... i just said it would be close yet the camaro will most likley take it out. my point is just writing it off as sucks without ever working with one is a ignorant statement.

come on, general consensus about the 301 is that they suck, you have to admit it, let's just drop it and have fun with fast cars!

just to answer a couple of questions. The T/A does NOT have true dual exhaust. Just a dual outlet muffler. Sorry about the ambiguous use of the word "mild" but im not sure what the cam specs are so ill try to find out from my friend tomorrow. The race is set for Friday at a local park, on a closed public road. No houses near there so people shouldnt be able to hear us and earlier today after school i marked off the quarter mile point. Not sure how big a difference this would make but my friend also only has a 3 speed auto. I, obviously, got the 4 speed auto overdrive tranny. Just as a little added measure, theres a place near my house that sells 100+ octane gas, and i think im going to fill up with a little bit of the stuff. Sorry to you pontiac lovers but the T/A is going to have to go DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!

yeah you wont have a problem beating it if he still has the junk y-pipe. i would NOT get the race gas, it will just make you slower unless you have like 12:1 compression and actually need it,......for tom, its easy to quickly write off a small engines as "sucks" but if you look at the 302 ford theres many running 8's and 9's all day, and the pontiac 301 is the same 4.000 bore and 3.000 stroke,..power comes from where ever its made, if its a good design it work regardless of size, or manufacture.

By no means am i writing off small engines, i have 305 for ***'s sake! They can be made to run as i'm sure most any engine can. I have a friend who used to run 10s in the 70s with 283 vegas.

The 301 is a smog era design that was not intended for high hp.
