Jailtime for DRIVING???

Well I had my license suspended for wreckless driving here in Tennessee. Well I got caught driving after the judge suspended my license. The officer was nice and wrote the ticket for not having my license with me and speeding, which saved me from going to jail.

Anyways to make a long story short, our city judge told me he could put me in jail for up to 6 months if I was caught again. I HAVE to drive because I goto college and work. What can I do??? If he throws me in jail it will totally **** up my life/school. I havent hurt anyone or drove drunk. Why is it that drunk drivers get a slap on the wrist and I might get thrown in jail for driving to school and work.

WHat can I do?? Do I need a lawyer the next time I go in front of him??? Please help.

You can get someone to drive you to school/work. Obviously, I don't know the circumstances surrounding your suspended license, but if that's the consequence of your actions then you should be a man and accept them and do what it takes not to make the same mistake in the future once your driving priviledges are restored.

I don't, however, recommend driving on a suspended license.

Yeah but hell doesnt 6 months sound a LITTLE extreme to you? The only tickets I have received have been a reckless driving, 15 over, and failure to appear in court( Thats what originally got my license suspended, they automatically suspend if you are a no show).

Kinda funny though that I dont see many DUI people serving 6 months even though they clear endanger hundreds of lives. Even DUI drivers get a partial license allowing them to travel to and from work and or school. Doesnt make much sense to me. Our local judge is under review as we speak for abusing his fineing, and jailing powers.

ALso, the wreckless driving was because my transmission CHIRPED the tires going into second. It churps second at anything about 2200 RPMS. All I did was pull into traffic and it churped them at 3000 RPMS, Wasnt speeding or ANYTHING

Like I said...I don't know the circumstances surrounding the suspension of your license, although failure to appear is very serious. Why didn't you appear in court? I honestly can't say that I think it's too unfair to suspend your license for 6 months for failure to appear unless you were in some horrific accident and were physically unable to show.

I agree with you that the punishment for DUI isn't harsh enough.

You got f*cked, so you might as well stop whining about it. Yeah, it sucks, but there isn't a whole lot you can do about it. To get where you need to go, you have a few options.

Learn the bus routes, both school and city, and use them.
Get rides from someone.
Get a bicycle.

These methods suck, but you can get around without a car.

I'd stop whining about being threatened with 6 months in jail if oyu get caught driving without a license a second time. My friend got caught doing it last year, the FIRST time, and since he couldn't pay the $2000 fine, he sat in jail for a couple weeks.
Also, why were you speeding if you KNEW your license was suspended? Not real smart. If you decide to keep on driving and get caught, you deserve what you get.

YOU NEED A LAWYER!

I work for a lawyer, the situation you are in definetly REQUIRES legal representation. Open the phone book and make a few calls. Most lawyers will talk to you free of charge, but you are going to end up paying if you hire someone. You would be amazed at what a good lawyer can do to reduce/eliminate fines, so its money well spent.

sometimes you can get the judge to give you permission to drive to/from work, and to/from school, and usually between certain hours (i.e., during the daytime).

check it out, ask the judge if he would permit you to drive to/from work, and to/from school, at specific known times. they might let you - but if they find you where you don't belong, they will come down on you even more!

get a lawyer, too.

Go talk to the judge. Explain your predicament (be civil about it and dress nice). Most Judges are pretty understanding if you haven't done anything too terrible...at least all mine have been .

Oh yeah, Lincoln Hawk, your friend is the greatest...I think that I'll have to hail him .

Ok some help.

Ask the court to grant you a Work/School driving permit. This would allow you to LEGALLY drive to and from school/work. But beware if you are cought driving and your not anywhere near the way to school/work your in jail buddy.

well reckless driving is a very serious offence .. usually the officer wont give it to you unless hes an arsehole (if hes cool you just get a big speeding ticket) but as far as insurance companies are concerned reckless driving is almost as bad as a dui. reckless driving will get you a sr22 here in hawaii. I know when I got my reckless driving ticket I could have gotten arrested but I got pulled over right in front of my house so the officer just told me to go home. I was on probation for a year and now its off my record. was going 103 in a 35 @ 2am on a deserted road not near any houses but I got busted. sux

You can get a limited lisence so you can drive to/from school or work....but your insurance during that period would be absolutely rediculous. You'd besically be charged the maximum by your INS. company (if they don't drop you).

I'd just find a girlfriend with a car

As far as I know Tennesee cops aren't that picky. You must've done a little more than just chirp the tires See the judge about the restricted license (to and from school and work) and explain the nature of the "chirping" and why your car does it, although don't give him the idea that it's unsafe. Offer to take a safe driving course as well.

Personally I probably woudln't even try to explain the chirping unless you thought the judge was a car guy. otherwise he just won't get it and may end up wondering why you are driving such a "purpose built race car" or somesuch on the street. much easier to keep the rpm's down to a point where it won't chirp the tires when mr. policeman is around

my two cents..
