the 76 was one of the slowest vettes ever produced. dont get me wrong, you just gotta love that classic shark styling, but they were produced in the middle of the smog era and performance just wasnt a big thing back then. base engine (L48) was rated at 180hp. the optional engine (L82) had 210hp. im not sure of the torque ratings on either engine, but after viewing those hp numbers (and realizing that the 89 IROC had 235 hp), it doesnt really matter. L48 vettes were in the low 16s - high 15s. L82s were low 15 sec cars. the IROC will turn mid - high 14s.

Then I was correct,
the IROC should run a low 14 depending on which gears it got.

im not sure about the RS model... was the 350 an option for them? i thought it was IROCZ exclusive, and the RS was limited to the TBI 305 as its top engine? course, i could be wrong

thats what i thought, the original post had a 89 IROC 350 vs a 76 L82 equipped vette, then he asked if his RS had a chance. sorry, i got a little confused. but anyway... 89' IROC 350 vs 76' L82 Vette = IROC. any TBI car vs L82 Vette = Vette.

I don't know dude, there are some TBI's out there that might give 1 a run.

yeah, thats true. modded ones could take one down. i forget that these 70s vettes are 25+ years old, and most arent in the greatest state of tune. but if it is mechanically maintained, it should be able to handle a 305 TBI
I saw an article about a 77 Z28 with a stickshift, 3.73's and L48 and it ran a 16.3 at 83-84mph and some L82 vette running low 15's at like 91mph or so. So at the time those kinda times were considered "performance numbers" A new stock 5speed Mustang coupe could probably hang with an L82 vette or be right on it's butt. So I think you should take one, especially off the line. With your TPI and probably better tires (for some reason on average alot of 70's vettes and camaros usually have like BFG T/A's on em or something similar)
BTW it's a carb 350= cheapa$$ parts, easy to get going fast.

the L82 is definately the motor you want to get if youre purchasing a mid-late 70s Vette. but in my personal opinion neither motor does the name "Corvette" justice.

Those vette's were great except for what was under the hood. L48, L82, L83 (a 350 cease-fire that put out a whopping 200HP) engines were all junk. I had a chance to by a '76 stingray in good condition for $4000 and when i was test driving it, the pick-up was dissapointing. I didn't buy it (sure it has an sbc so you can alwasy make it faster but will it pass CA smog? hint...no). Some pretty slow vette's there were from '75 to '84.
My neighbor has an 80 Vette and a dual exhaust, custom, and an aftermarket intake and deleted smog. The best he could do at the track was 15.7!
We went out and started at a 15mph roll and I had to only stay at half throttle to keep up with him.
Not a strong running car at all.
