Hey thanks guys
It's a place to start. I'd like to price it out to see if it's affordable.
I could end up just repainting, with high heat paint for now.
I can always get them done in a year or so, since this is blowing the budget.

I was seriously considering the Hooker shorties a while back and the price I was quoted without the coating was about $760 for the set (and that includes the y-pipe). The store recommended that I not get the coating from Hooker and to go to this place in Cambridge (but for the life of me I can't remember the name...perhaps Trigger is right?!? I was told the coating from the manufacturers was around the same price a couple bucks more (about $300) but much better quality.
16th: If you don't mind removing them again and reinstalling than you should be fine with some hi-temp paint till next year. Definately a good solution to keeping the costs down. Personally I would want them coated first so I didn't have to reinstall those suckers. But that's just me being lazy!

Dragon, thanks, I'll talk to them at Jim's.I have dealt with them before, but I not sure he'll be impressed. I'm getting them from K&K in Stratford.
Gerrit, I went to K&K today. He said $675 is the best he can do. They're speical order and he needs depoists.
It sounds like the price is pretty good.
Irocker, I know what your saying about taking the headers off and on. I would prefer not doing it. Just need to see how the money goes. What I was hoping to do, was have the Y-pipe coated as well. Don't know if it will make any difference, I was thinking of trying to reduce heat between the oil pan and transmission.
I'll post what I find out about ceramic coating.

16th owner: can you send me a link to what those headers look like? and do they have A.I.R. tubes on them... I need them because I still have a long time before I am emission exempt..
Seems like an awful lot for non coated headers.. but maybe it is just me...
for 712 cdn you can SLP's from summit and you don't have to get them coated. (Stainless)

...Once you get the shipping and bend-over-brokerage fees done with, you will be very lucky to get SLP's for under $900. The Hooker's are a little more pricey than some, but still cheap than SLP and supposedly pretty good flowing.
Hey guys
92zedder, if you can get the SLP's for a good price, you should go for it. Do you have dual convertors on your car? Something to look into, if you do. Most headers with y-pipe are for singles.
Yesterday when I was at K&K, Kevin told me the hookers are special order, it'll be a week or two, so I put down a deposit. But by the time I got home there was a message on the machine. "They have a set in the warehouse, you can pick them up tomorrow"
They do have the tubes and are good quality, BUT they aren't equal lenght primaries. So, I don't know if it's Summit or Hooker who right the details on the parts, but obviously alot of BS.
I am keeping them and gonna high heat paint them, then wrap them to keep the heat down under the hood. May not look the greatest, but it's far from a show car.

There is a good article on Header coatings in the August issue of Car Craft. It will answer some of your questions as to whether they work or not. They are saying that factory applied paints will last for the first 5 minutes before it will begin flaking ( they used Blackjack headers for their test.) The ceramic coatings are expensive but the last a long time. They also say that Jet-Hot Header Coatings are the leading exhaust coating outfits and that they not only coat the outside, they also coat the inside of the headers. They say that the exhaust gases are very corrosive. They also talk about the "curse of the mummified headers", using the wrap causes excessive heat to be trapped inside the header itself and can cause the disintegration of the mild-steel tubing. If you are contemplating coating your headers, you might want to read up on the pros and cons. Just an interesting article I thought I would share with you.
Thanks Kevin
I bought a roll of header wrap and reading the instructions really made me wonder about it. They caution you so many times. Make sure to do this, make sure to do that. Not sure I'm gonna use it.
I know the racers sware by it. Colder engine bay, increased hp., but they're engines aren't running long.
Gonna check more into coating. I like the idea of trying to cool the engine compartment.
I'll pick up that mag.
