Here comes another $600 repair bill for me!

****!!!! I don't believe this **** maybe you guys can help me out.

Ever since I changed my clutch I know something has been weird about it. Whoever I let drive my car, they say it's ****ed up. I go for an oil change, the mechanic who drives it into the bay says it's ****ed up. But it does the job so I didn't complain or anything to my mechanic.

Anyway, here is my problem. I'm driving today to go pick up my Flex-A-Lite Temperature Switch and this is the scenario.

I'm in 4th gear, at about 2000 rpms. I press the pedal (almost floored) and suddenly the rpms just shoot up to 5000 in less than a second, the car stops accelerating, and I just have to brake and it goes back down. It's as if it's slipping or something.

I believe it also happened in 3rd gear. Driving, press the gas pedal down, and the rpms just shoot right up and the car barely accelerates.

Now don't get me wrong, it's not like a burnt clutch. The second I ease up off the gas it goes back down.

I did notice that after the track I had a 2 tiny puddles under my car. Both are green. One is under the rad (I don't think it's a hole, I think it's just excess from me draining the overflow a bit, but dunno) and I had another near/under the tranny or back of engine area.

Now i'm thinking perhaps one of these puddles might be transmission fluid. In which case, would low tranny fluid cause the problem I am having?

Once again, another scenario. I'm driving up a hill in 4th gear, I boot it down, and the RPMS just shoot up to 4500 and there is no SUPER acceleration....

I hope the mechanic won't have to drop my transmission out because I can't afford this **** right now. But I'd like to know what I'm in for tomorrow. BTW my SFCS might be for sale soon. If I have to do the repair, they will be. hehehe

Take the car back to the mechanic and tell him eversince the clutch job you've been experiancing problems.

You never know...he may have goofed during the job or overlooked something.

If I were you, get the car off the road and put it up on the hoist.

Sorry to have to tell you this but it really does sound like the clutch is slipping. Now if you are getting a leak then it might be fluid on the clutch itself.

Hope you make out ok.

and i forgot low trans fluid won't feel like this grinding gears would. So it is probably the clutch. But trans fluid on the clutch would do this.

Sounds to me like you have leaking heater hoses, and coolant is getting the clutch disc wet, causing it to slip. Check out where the leak is coming from.

It may also be a coincidental leak, but i would check that first.

Your not leaking tranny fluid, it isn't green. Its red/pink. Your clutch is definately slipping. You said it's been acting up ever since you had it put in. If it was lined up properly, it will wear fast and start slipping on you.

Red fluid is tranny, green is coolant...

You could do a swap of fluids like me to the weird stuff...

Went to dex-cool, rain-x washer fluid...

Now I got 3 reddish pink fluids that are only distinguished by thier viscosity lol...

Good thing is my car's not leaking so no probs till it does lol.

So yeah.. if the leak is at the back of the engine it could work its way and foul up the clutch causing slippage...

Next scenario, coolant and tranny are seprate and coincidental only, tranny fluid is low and clutch is slipping...

Last clutch done just wrong and clutch is gonna give soon because of that...

Either way... BLAME THE MECHANIC WHO PUT IT IN. It's too early for a new clutch to give out if done right, and even with the way you drive, tame in comparison to some people, it should last a bit longer than that...

hmmmm dood.. which side is the coolant leaking on (at the back) this may be the intake gasket, like what I got. Mine leaks on the drivers side, not much though.. usually only on start-up and cool-down.

I agree with the rest of the guys... the coolant may be getting on your clutch disc... get it checked ASAP dood.

you said you noticed a few leaks after races at the track? hmmm..
could be a coolant hose leaking on your clutch or my big scare would be your head gasket leaking (since you where reving it up quite a bit that day) at the back of your head leaking down.... I hope its not that.. but if it were me that is what it would be... Never a simple problem always huge!

I'll give ya $5000 for the car? hahahaha

Please excuse my ignorance here, but...

Do the (I assume) T5's in your 3rd gens. use auto tranny fluid? The manual units GM used in other applications (Isuzu, Muncie and Suzuki) are lubed with engine oil- so if you bust a seal or crack the case- it's engine oil on the ground-i.e. not pink or red.

Beyond that- I might suggest that you have some fluid leak on your clutch (radiator fluid or possibly hydraulic fluid if you have a hydraulically activated clutch) and it's initial adjustment was not quite dead-on. Can't say specifically for a T5- but most manual trannys have a clutch/pedal adjustment (if not hydraulically activated-if so they are supposed to be 'self adjusting') that has to be set up correctly or you will have improper pedal travel or not enough plate pressure.

Find all your leaks and tell mechanic you had a problem previous to leak(s) so he/she doesn't try to blame it all on a fluid issue.

The T5's run a hydraulic clutch, they're simple. They also all use tranny fluid, except for '87 they call for a special GM # fluid, but I used regular Dex Mercon III anyways. But mine was a replacement WC, which i just found out.

If your leaking rad fluid onto your flywheel and it's getting on your clutch, you think he'd smell the rad fluid when it burns from friction???

My bet is on the rear main

I don't know what they are on about coolant leak blah blah tranny fluid leak blah blah... he has a T5 they don't leak they blow up instead. Never had a T5 leak except at the yoke and that is not gonna hurt the clutch.

My money is on the rear main seal TOO MANY 6k SHIFTS will do it every time. Assuming the clutch pak is not defective a leaking rear main will contaminate the bell housing ergo the slipping clutch.

Sorry to hear about your troubles EasySpeed I know you love that car and it is a real p*ss-off to have stuff break when you can't afford it.

my .02 cents worth.
RP.

If you want to keep you're coolant pressure managable at high rpm, I'd recommend an underpulley kit...
