starters

ok,

my starter went on my iroc about a week ago...i finally got around to try to change it....there are alot of problems...

the starter i pulled off was about half teh size that i got from the parts place...(both 305s and 350s are the same part #)

the head of the new starter seems to be waaaaaaay to big to go into the slot where it needs to fit...

any ideas on how to get this damned thing in??? or is there an aftermarket one that is easier to get in...

thanks for your help

Usually if it is the right starter for you car it will look the exact same. Unless you've got a mini high torq on there. I would take the one off the car to the prats store you got the new one from and show them the difference and see what they have to say.

"well the computer says that thats the right starter and its the same one for the 305/350s so thats the one you need..."

but then why are they different sizes...?

"i dont know but this is the one the computer says it is so thats the one you need"

IDIOTS I TELL YOU PLAIN AND SIMPLE

350/305 are the same that's true, but the starter for auto and stick is another matter.

well....we tried just about everything to get that damned thing in...

and...it doesnt fit..even when its filed down it still doesnt fit...

the head of the starter doesnt go into the tranny...

now...

is there a way to tell what kind of tranny you have (years wise and stuff) just by looking or is there #s you have to look for....i asked the guy at the parts counter what the starter looked like from a 4th gen to see if the starter looked the same...none in stock...so i have an unidentified starter that im sending in to get rebuilt...

anyone know anything about trannys?? and if this starter could be from a 4th gen??(i also asked to see the starter from the tpi vettes but they were different as well(ones that come in the tpi irocs are the same)

thanks for any help guys

I used the original starter that came with my 89 TPI and 700r trans. On that same TPI engine with a TH350 trans. Works on both, remember the starter bolts up to the block, not the tranny. Like Slade said.

Is you car stick or auto??? This can make a difference>

Here are the clues: you have a 5spd, the starter that came out is half the size of the new one...solution....they gave you a starter for an automatic transmission. Take it back and stick it up their....

If you started to 'file' the starter down- this should have been your first clue something was way way way wrong. I assume Crappy Tire won't catch this and some poor a-hole who gets the starter next also will not be able to fit it up due to this 'filing'. -Just a note as to why 1/2 the stuff from CT doesn't fit properly- misuse/abuse by a previous 'buyer'.
