Front license plate
hey guys, is there any way around the front licence plate, like can you put something in the window?
I think my car would look good with either an IROC grill or a 91-92 Z28 grill.
Whatcha think?

You could put it in the window, but if you get some angry cop you will get a ticket. Lots of people do it, but your not suppose to.
I was wondering about the same thing with my car. I'm getting a whole new front piece and the holes arn't drilled for the licence plate and I don't want to drill them, it looks good the way it is.
So you just take your chances with putting it in the window...well I'm up for that

I have mine in the window and have got questioned about it. It is technically illegal, but you will get hasstled less thatn not having it at all. I just decided that I'll take the chance, but just be warned that you are suseptable to a ticket.

which grill do you guys like better? I thnk I like the top one with the red bowtie, but then the other one with camaro in white lettering would look good too. what do ya think?
I got a $110 ticket for not having the plate on the front of my car (it was stuck between the dash and winshield so it could easily be seen but that didn't seem to matter) they also found a radar detector in my car and charged me $170 for that too.. This was all at Wassaga beach for May 24 and the cops do tend to be more **** at that time of year..

The reason you're not supposed to put it on the dash is that if you were ever in an accident at highway speed, the thing would slice through you like a hot knife through butter. Kinda worse than a $125 ticket if you ask me, but hey, to each his own.

heh, here's a funny story
in my old camaro, the 91 rs, i had my plate in my dash... i got pulled over, i didn't even know for what... guy asked for my license and stuff.... disappears... comes back... i go "so... what did i do wrong?"... he goes "where's your front plate"...
i told him it was in the dash, he said it's not ENTIRELY visible there and starts writing me a ticket. I go to him "listen man, i just got a speeding ticket last week, i can't afford this!!!"... he goes "ok i'll let you off this time, but put the plate back on".
i got home, called the police station and asked what the laws were. the guy there said the plate CAN be in the dash, as long as it is RIGHTSIDE up (ie mostly vertical) and not tucked in the dash so you can't see it.
so... i went home, got some ducktape, and DUCKTAPED that plate to the inside of the dash neatly. it was vertical, you could see the entire plate, and i was just waiting for that guy to pull me over again!!!! (and if i got into an accident, it's ducktaped! SO HAHA TRACEY
)

I figure if I'm not gonna put one on, why do a lame attempt to please the cops? It only attracts more attention seeing it on the dash.
I haven't been bothered in over 2 years for a front plate... although for the winter months I put on my front plate so I can trash it like my last one (which I happen to have as well) so I'd have reason not to run a front plate again.

If you wanna duct tape it, that's fine by me Easy. Guess you weren't exactly a physics major though, huh? You got some duct tape seatbelts to complete the ensemble?
(I think the fact that he said "ducktaped" pretty much says it all. Yeah, nothing says style like some duct tape on the ole dash I always say. Much better than just bolting it in place where it supposed to be. Hey Easy, here's a personalized plate for ya...REDGREEN...aren't ya glad we can have 8 characters on a plate in Ontario now? The whole thing fits!)

and the ducktape was on the glass only, not on the dash!

No front plate attached to direct front (i.e. grill or bumper) of vehicle- illegal.
According to the Highway Traffic Act, "plates must be affixed to the vehicle in the prescribed manner". The problem: there is NO prescribed manner. I did this the hard way and went to court over such a ticket a couple of years ago- and pointed out that there was no published or verbal "prescribed manner" available from the MTO or any of its staff. Judge did not care and proceeded to recite to me the "prescribed manner" as the courts have/do judge it:
Front plate must be attached to vehicle in plain sight so as to be readable from 20 feet away while standing directly in front and facing vehicle. Attachment to the front-most available part of the vehicle that is practical-i.e. front bumper, grill or header panel- is required as long as it does not block any safety items such as headlights or turn signals. If a factory license plate holder was installed on the vehicle when new- it is assumed this is the most practical and logical place to affix it from that day onward- absence of the factory bracket is irrelevant, the location of a previously existing bracket is the relevant factor.
-The point is it is NOT written anywhere exactly where the front license plate should be located, the courts use there own definition. As such, it is law, although not technically legislation law. This is what would be considered the reverse situation of the Supreme Court of Canada overturning a piece of legislation- the court has 'created' a law out of imprecise wording/description in the HTA. As such- it is illegal, you can be charged with the offense, and you will be found guilty if you go to court over it- even if you have a plate in the front windshield.
As for the 'reason' being that the plate flying around in the event of a collision and cutting up vehicle occupants- this is certainly a possibility- but not the "reason" it being placed on the dashboard is invalid. Nor is this a legal position. As a comparative example, I can drive around with sheets of thin stainless steel positioned directly behind my head and as long as it doesn't block my view out of the vehicle- it is not illegal and probably 10 times more likely to injure me or other vehicle occupants. The "reason" is that the courts say it doesn't match their "prescibed manner". Don't confuse common sense with "reasons". Law/courts and common sense are in fact mutually exclusive concepts that occasionally cross over one another.
-If this were the "reason" you would be charged with a/the specific offense of having the plate on the dashboard- not the offense of the plate not being affixed in the prescribed manner. Fact is, except for police/MTO/regular people being able to see it in order to 'run' a plate or report a license plate number in the event of a hit and run- there really is no other valid "reason" why a second (in this case front-) plate has to be installed on the vehicle anywhere. Ontario is only one of 18 US States and Canadian provinces requiring a front/second plate on a car.

also zed, i like the bowtie
Radar detectors are illegal here in Ontario, doesn't stop me from having one though
I don't really use it since its so old now, I trust my eyes, skill and instinct to keep the cops off me and away from accidents. Odds are I drive more distance than most people on the board here too, avg 45 000 kms a year... (this avg doesn't even include the year I moved to California and back)
