For now it's 20 years. But I wouldn't be too surprised if that 20 year exemption gets removed some time because they want you in 4 bangers or hybrides and there's also the kowtow accord which our country ascribes to and that may require tighter emissions laws once they get going with it.

you have a long time left dave...like7 more years which means3 more tests
i say...do what you want to your car...
all you have to do is pay the fee that needs to be paid so you can get a conditional pass for 2 years every 2 years and you are set...
I HATE STUPID GOVNMT THEY ALWAYS TAKE TAKE TAKE AND NEVER GIVE!!

yeah conditional is like $450 now...you can only do that if you own the car already and are not trying to change it into your name..
hot rod status is very vague....the best that i know is that you qualify if you have an engine that wasnt offered in your car in the year that your car was made... so....any motor that isnt a 305 or a 350 should work....and even if its a 305/350 with bore and stuff that doesnt count!!

"When do our cars have to stop doing the emissions test"
-at the 20 year mark as mentioned above- also, coincidentally, the point where very few insurance companies will now accept coverage on a car- i.e. once you're out of 'emission testing land' you get to fiddle and fart around finding an insurance company that will insure a 20+ year-old car as a daily driver- the number of insurers willing to do this seems to be declining rapidly (many don't want to touch cars over 15 years old).

Yeah - it's 20 years except when it's 21 years.
My car is 20 years old now but my license sticker came due last February.
I drove it last year w/out the sticker.
What I'm getting from the Ministry is that I still have to have it e-tested to get a sticker this year notwithstanding that the car is now 20 years old. Reason being that their computer won't accept it and they have to keep the computer happy.
Only way around it is to get new plates.

Thanx for insight - now I understand why they still want to e-test my 83TA this year even though the car is over 20 years old.

It's already had one conditional so it'd be $450 for the second conditional.
Be cheaper to just get new plates and then apparently it won't have to be tested.

Get a conditional GM style...
Generous motors have great prices... take a cat which you can easilly claim heck my cats probably not working right so gotta get it replaced... etc. They usually sell them for around $400-500 + labor... = instant conditional pass...
In other words do the e-test there, pass or fail just talk to the techs. You'll find you hit that conditional limit real quick when you factor in price of parts and labor...
You get the conditional pass for the plate sticker, no e-test sticker (boo hoo ) and it still cost you the price of a regular emission test...

Why would you have to wait until 2004.
If it won't pass now you can still get a conditional as mentioned above.

I just picked up the '84 T/A late last summer for $1000.00
so you can imagine what I got for a grand....
1. Swiss cheese Exhaust
2. Slashed overflow container
3. Leaky Valve Covers (bad gaskets)
4. Drilled rims (there garbage)
5. No speakers or stereo (don't really care)
the list goes on......
I need to do some work on it still and I am loking to build a 383Ci
for her so it will probibly take untill 2004 to finish it since I don't
get paid very well and I have lots of bills.
Heres a pic.

I thought you ment it was something e-test specific that was keeping you from getting the car on the road until it was over 20 years ie 2004.

George, See number 1 "Swiss Cheese Exhaust"
I'd rather replace it with straight pipes from headers to mufflers than put a set of cat's on for one year!
Save $200- $ 400 !

ont. drive clean amendments
i think the drive clean project is a wonderful idea. but i think there is problems in the system. i propose these changes......
#1. the cost should be 250$ every year for all cars.
#2. there should be no hot rod clause
#3. cars with hi performance engines should be penalized 500$
#4 headers should be made ilegal, as should hi flo cats
#5. the opp should have the right to remove the offending vehicle even if it looks like it could even become a violator of our clean air laws
#6. the money made from this program shoudl be put into a pension fund for our law makers who brought this program into law.
for the record i have a auto car also. good day to u i say.

Charlie:
I agree with you about the exhaust and so on but you might find that you still have to have the original emissions stuff, ie cat, on the car even after it's 20 years old.

#1. I think Iraqman should get a life.
#2. I really think they should get all those 15 year old imports that leave a thick cloud of black or blue smoke in their wake off the roads and leave the performance cars alone.
#3. If your (under 20 year old) car is up to standards I think the goverment should give YOU $250.00
#4. Free Emissions Tests
Stupid Emissions Crap!
