289 Rwhp

Well the good news it that I’m making power, base run no s\charger (289 rwhp) the bad news is that a 700 R4 cant take 365 ft lb @ the rear wheels on the motor alone. It started out last week Saturday @ TAG Racecraft setting up the car, that’s where the numbers came from. We had some problems with not enough fuel and no boost because of a bad belt, two passes and end of dyno session. This Wednesday @ High-Tech racing we fixed the fuel and belt problem. The first test run @ 60 km\h I put the pedal to the metal, the front end came up the tires started screaming and the boost gauge read 8psi, that’s when the rpm’s shot up and we were slowing down, in short Trans broke. So did not even started tuning and now I need a transmission, if anyone has a 2004R Grand National trans for sale please p.m me thanks.

That sucks, Dave. I will have to agree with Trigger, that 289 is impressive. Now you need a tranny that can handle it. So why the 2004R GN? Is it that much better than the 700R4 that has been rebuilt to withstand that kind of punishment? Would that tranny just bolt in? Just curious...

Nice #'s, but I would actually stray away from the 200-4R as it will take just as much to mount as a TH350/400. The 200-4R is a bit stronger then the 700R4. but only the CFZ 200-4R out of the Monte SS's the one in the GN were the BTF 200-4R a strong tranny, but not quite as strong as teh CFZ were. Unless you paln on alot of HIgway driveing etc. that requires a OD. I would go with a TH350/400 as they are much cheaper to build to handel alot of power. Just my $0.02.

Thanks guys, but there should be more to come. Kevin to answer your question yes it will bolt up, the 700R4 can be built to handle the power but requires a lot of expensive parts like the drum that the input shaft goes into is made of aluminium and a steel one cost $500.US plus there were some other things. The transmission shops I spoke with Trans-Ware, API and some others recommends the 2004R as the better choice of the both, and cost difference is not that much. The problem is finding a core!!!

Good $0.02, thanks for the info, although I’m licenses my knowledge on tranny’s are basic, so info is Very Good. I agree that the 350/400 is better for hp\torque and cheaper but I also want to be able to cruise to the track without revving the snot out of my motor on the highway plus with a 3:73 rear that doesn’t help. That’s my reasons for a trans with an OD. What year Monte Carlo SS are we talking about with the CFZ?

86 to 88 SS's bear the CFZ 200-4R. It would be your best choice, but I would get it worked over by a professional still even though.

The 700R4's can be built to withstand a lot of power, probably more than a lot of us will ever put through them.

The key is FINDING THE PERSON TO REBUILDING THEM RIGHT. I would NOT bring them to any type of regular transmission shop. Converters for a 700R4 are fairly expensive, but u get what u pay for. There are many Vettes running 700R4's that are pretty quick, visit your local drag track & you'll see for yourself. Oh & be prepared to PAY.

A TH350 would be an easier swap, you WILL hate it though as it really limits your driveability depending on your gear.

Amen. Most of the TR and TTA trannys don't break, they wear out. If I remember right the 2004R in the turbo cars has a unique valve body and converter.

Th700 gets a bad wrap because they have the most finicky TV of the later ODs. Milodon or some company makes a better adjustable TV throttle bracket where you can basically run the tranny firm all of the time. It isnt a solution but will give the tranny a few more kms before the bands start slipping or it starts spilling parts.
