Clunk, Clunk

Hey all,

the problem I am having is that when i step on the go pedal hard I get a clunk noise from my drive train at the shift points. I have even felt movement in my shifter. slow acceleration dosen't produce this effect. My two question are what do you think it is? and am I taking my life in my hands by driving it?

Drive train= built 350, built 700r4 vette shift kit, V6 3.73 rear.

Any help is appreciated..

Change your trans mount, it is torn, happens all the time. I am on my 6th.

Poly mount is stronger, will be the last you buy. It is usually $10-$15 more than the rubber. Solid?? I would never want to mount the trans solid, you would have alot more vibration!!

I find it difficult to find a poly mount in any local store. CT, UAP/NAPA and parts source all have the same one, some weird round thing that is made in China and it lasts no time.

Get the Energy Suspension one!

I found that mine (after tearing about 3 apart) resulted in a lttle more vibration in the car, especially when cold outside.

One thing I did to minimize the vibration is to not install the plate that covers the crossmember side of the mount. Also cut off the 'bulge' of polyurethane that this plate covers. This mod takes the preload off the mount, making it 'softer'.

Wouldn't Carbelt in TO have these?

I believe Karbelt's main store is in Ajax- so halfinchwrench should have no problems getting his hands on one. Any performance parts dealer can get the Energy Suspension part- even the Canadian Tire parts counter (better if you go in knowing the Energy Suspension part number you need). All perf. parts dealers buy from the same half-dozen distributors and all the distributors carry Energy's line.

I think it's their wharehouse thats here, not a retail store.

Never priced them at Carbelt and the like, their prices seem to be thru the roof on other things I checked.

The thing with tranny mounts is you need it right away. Can't wait 2 weeks for it to arrive from summit or jegs. I should order a half dozen of them and hoard them away.

Off topic a little but to defend Summit I just ordered a bunch of gaskets, oil pump, windage tray and bolts on the 19th(after hours even) and they were at my door by the 21st

If the shifter is moving it's pretty much for sure that it's the mount.

Check the torque arm bushing. If it's never been changed it may be shot as well and could cause pinion angle to go positive under load.

If the torque arm is shot (bushing) is it worth the cost and effort to go tubular aftermarket? and brand suggestions?? oh and well I am at it good place to have a dyno run in the GTA? Thanks in advance.

Difficult to say. There's a lot of reasons why they're better but they also cost about $500. There might be other things that you need more. If you can't move the torque arm at the bushing it's probably OK but if it's been on there a long time I'd change it anyway while your doing the mount - it's about 30-40 for a poly bushing in Toronto. As for the torque arm, check the pinion angle and if it's OK then leave the stock torque arm unless you need the benefits of an aftermarket one.

Andy at Straight Line Racing had the bushings in stock last time I was there. 416-757-9804
